Hi
I coach a European team. We get 16 - ... y olds, 95% of them only know American Football from the movies.
We usually "typecast" players. Mostly by weight. Because of injuries we shifted some players around (necessity) who turned out to be amazing at that new position. I had a Nose playing end, a linemen playing TE, etc... and they did an amazing job.
So my question is, are there any things you do to find the natural skills somebody has? Do you do speed tests, strength tests, general drills etc... to figure out where somebody belongs?
Right now I feel like we re mislocating certain players just because of their physique
Tnx

When I was in high school, the first day of freshman practice everybody went through receiving drills and were located to position groups the next day based on how well they could catch. If somebody like myself caught very few or no passes, they were moved to offensive line. These were not difficult passes, just typically fades and quick slants and outs. Sorry I don't have any experience with the more in depth tests done, just something we did.

My WR aren between 132 pounds and 176 my linemen are between 231 and 308 pounds I m more looking for ways to see if a linemen would be fit to play lb or TE. Right now I ll do 40y dashes, shuttle drills, 3 cone drills and run them through those tests, compare them with my current RB, LB TE group and see if I have ppl that fit the profile. For TE and WR catching skills, it s pretty easy, they catch a ball, or they don t .

Honestly coach, plug 'em into the position, coach 'em up and let the chips fall as they may.
A 40 yard dash or bench press competition isn't going to tell you much about their ability to play ball. I mean, you're going to have your obvious position situations; a 308lb guy is going to be a lineman of some kind.
You may be better served by video taping your practice sessions; you'll get a whole lot out of film.
