I've never been at a place that came in in season. Coaches met Sunday night about 5pm-8pm. Kids need a break, we need a break from them.

What do you wanna know? Lack of practice time (even though the school controls all 24 hours a day)? Kids running in and out of the school? Lack of a summer program? We have four pillars in our "house". Military, Academic, Resident life, athletics. Everyone thinks they are most important. Ideal structure IMO: Academic, Athletics, Military, RL (yeah, Im biased) How its Structured: Military, Academic- death match for scraps of whats left in the day.
Sorry, this was a rant. (Best customer service voice) How may I help you?

I'd like to think there are more of these types then d-bag coaches. Those of us who try to do this the right way, whats best for kids and not show up another coach or a bunch of 15-18 year olds to satisfy our own ego. I'm in a tough spot, we get our butts kicked on the regular, and I've met only a couple d-bags (Spread team who keeps throwing the ball deep up 50). I've been lucky to play coaches who are respectful, etc. I get it if you're up 50 and your JV is throwing the ball on 3 &7. Those kids need to play too. I've had lots of conversations at half with coaches who say they are playing their jv on O, and seniors who don't play a lot on D. You know, thats fine. I appreciate the honesty and respectfulness.

We have this theory that our kids think since they are the best here, they are the best everywhere. Many wonder why they aren't getting D-1 looks, etc. They don't even know what a D-1 player looks like, other then IMO, it ain't them.

Private school. Haven't won more then 5 games in a season since the 60s. Year 1:4-5 Year 2:1-9 This season: 0-4
We (I), have support of the alumni, parents, the booster club, the AD, the teachers...everyone but the school president. His thought, according to my AD is "we will just make a huge offer to someone and they will come in and make us a winner." My AD's response, "Who do you think is going to come in here?" -Side note, I make less money in my stipend then the assistant junior high volleyball coach from the public middle school. In the 3 years, I've had 4 AD's (current one is awesome). One assistant whos been with me since day one, other then that at least one new member a year (Year 2 only had 2 assistants, this season one assistant was re-assigned to soccer after last week).
We've historically been the worst program in the state since the 80s. We have no off-season program, no summer program. Our strongest kid is a 150 pound junior, who happens to live in town, so I worked with all summer. The school finally added 1 block of weight training for the first time ever (putting us only 45 years behind everyone else).
My AD has said the president is looking to make a change(same President whos been here two years and looking for a new gig himself), but he's (AD) my biggest fan (I've heard the support of all the veteran teachers too). In the 3 years since my staff and I came in; 5 kids Academic All-State 1 game missed to grades/behavior 3 Kids playing in college.
Before us, helmets were seldom reconditioned, no Hudl, no clinics, no attempts at 7 on 7 (we were able to kind of piece some together), our shoulder pads were all from the 90s, other then what I was able to get from USA football. Now, to be fair, our AD is fantastic and went to bat, saying this wasn't safe and got us $$$ to replace these helmets with brand new ones, as well as used shoulder pads from this decade.
Its taken a lot of cleaning up, we ran 8 kids off this year because we make them come to practice, practice when they are here, and not be a donkey in the classroom. However the 26 kids we have would run through a wall for us. Now next season, there will be about 75% roster turnover, same as it is every year.
I mean, what else can I do here? Wait for the axe to drop and go somewhere else who will appreciate the effort? Current family situation makes moving very hard. Its hard because this is my program, these are my players. I want to win, who doesnt? But call me ignorant or arrogant, no one would care about this place and program more then me.

We've always said if a kid was a varsity starter he didn't play JV, otherwise, regardless of grade (other then senior he played jv). I've had sophomores who didn't play JV, and Juniors who did. There are only so many games in this sport of ours, if a kid deserves to play, let him play. If you are loading up your jv with juniors who start varsity to win JV games, you got issues. Unless the team you're playing has a coaching staff that are jerks, you got fired from that school or dated a girl from that town and it went south, then yeah, play everyone and put 100 on them.

I personally didn't like the STL clinic. Second year in a row I wasn't thrilled. Agree about the chalk wars thing, it seemed like that's all there was Saturday Afternoon. During my survey that Glazier sent out, I said as much. Also, I really liked the Thursday Night, Friday All Day, Saturday Morning format better. Saturday afternoon was low in attendance, and Sunday morning when I peaked in a room, it was more of a ghost town then usual. Spoke to someone from the clinic in the elevator, they said numbers were down from what they expected.

Not to hijack, but I miss the Thursday Night, ALL day Friday, Saturday morning format in St.Louis. Think they did it once, maybe twice. Selfishly I'm still home Saturday afternoon. I wear whatever is comfortable at clinic. As HC, I have a team gear (dont care what) in the lobby, and NOTHING with team gear when we go out

My former HC used to yell all the time (career HC record 3-17). First time I was upset, and his response was "that's coaching." Um... Worked for a different Hall of Fame coach, never yelled at an assistant once. Now did we have it out in the office after the kids had left? Yup. Players never knew about it. He took all the blame with the kids and media. I've tried to model this behavior, the latter. Have I given my DC some looks, like what the heck you doing? A lot. Have I whispered in his ear a few choice words. Yes. Have I ever called out a coach in front of our kids? Never.

Last Friday Night, we were on the wrong end of a blowout (again). Had a kid take a hit on a interception return. Trainer brought him to our sideline, evaluated him with NOT having a concussion. We sat the kid out awhile, then asked him if he wanted to play (last game, kid is a senior). He said yes. Kid returned to the field, was able to play, no problems. Got off the bus at home, hey Kid, you feeling alright? Ya coach, I'm good. Monday rolls around, kid tells nurse at school he got hit on the head, nurse says he has a concussion. Mind you, we are a military school with drill and PT at 6 am, and some kids play the system to get out of stuff. Mom is called and livid that kid wasn't taken to ER. Wants to know why her son played with a head injury, and if he was hit so hard, why was he playing?
Question is, did I do something wrong? Trainer cleared kid, we asked him if he wanted to go back in, as it was his final game ever. He was able to remember all plays, etc.. just wondering if I'm liable for anything and if I shouldn't have played the kid.

Im 0-6, gonna be 0-7 after this weeek. I started the year with 11 seniors, 4 quit, kicked one off (starting QB), another got hurt in the off-season. Out of my "top" 10 players, 6 are sophomores, 2 are juniors. I had a heart to heart with my (new) starting QB, whos played 5 games at this spot. I laid it out for him, that with our season the way it was going, I was gonna start giving the sophomore QB reps in games, probably the 1st series of the second quarter, and the way things are going the entire 4th quarter. Same with the freshman fullback and a senior. Thanked those two seniors for believing in me and the program, still gonna let them play all of defense and make sure I give them the best chance to get into the college of their choosing. My future is now. The seniors are a part of the "old way", I was their 3rd HC in 4 years. I have high standards. I expect them to do weird stuff like come to practice, and not act a fool during practice. My soph's only know what we've taught them. They are a small class, but have ability. Gonna ride or die with those guys the rest of the way out, knowing it will be an investment in next year.
Also, totally stealing the visit another school idea. Buddy of mine just down the road has a good program and gonna ask if we can visit.

I'll send anyone anything, but won't trade on my alma mater, head coach is a very good friend of mine and I played for him for a year, and coached with him for six when we were both assistants. Other then that, who you want? If I got it, you can have it.

Our former head coach told the kids, Hey, I'm not going to be at practice tomorrow, Coach J is in charge, I'm going to a concert. That's about 5 minutes before he lost control of the team for the season.
My brother in law is getting married July 1st, we have team camp that week at night. I asked Zach if he cared if I missed the rehearsal dinner, he didn't care. My wife (his sister), ultimate football wife, was a little upset, but got on board with camp. It's a fricken dinner.
As far as a party? Unless you can promise me I'm gonna win a ton of money playing blackjack at the mandatory casino stop? Not interested, even then, not interested (I'm 35, I'm too old to stay out all night drinking, and strip club? If I want to give money to a woman I can't have sex with, I'll just go home).
2 of my groomsmen missed my party. One was at a speech tournament as sponsor. Ok, it happens. No big deal. Those guys may give you some crap, but its not gonna matter. Go to practice.
