I once had a Hall of Fame coach in our state tell me "High School boys are thinking about one thing all day (you can guess what that is). If you're lucky enough to get their attention for two hours of practice, you're doing something right."
I'm kind of in the "no chalk talk" crew, because of that, and because we have the attention span of nats on coke.

This is always one of my favorite topics every year. Who's the best speaker you've seen this year? Who's the worst? You don't have to give names, but why were they bad? My favorite is Johnny Chalkboard who tells me what his 6'8 350 pound war daddy does as a nose guard. Cool story, tell me what I can do with 5'8 165.

The camp we go to, there isn't much time for anything but football. We play game after game after game.We do have a talk after the games are over, but thats it.

My team is a melting pot of different cultures, that comes from being a boarding school. What I did this year to avoid them being clique like was put them in position groups. That way, if they had a clique it was their position teammates.

I don't know if this is an actual clinic topic, it comes up a lot on this board but... I write resumes for a living and "head hunt". I could possibly talk about job markets and what AD's/Supers are looking for in resumes and offer interview tips, "mock interviews" and help with stuff like that if there would be an interest?

After they sign up, invite them to a sponsor appreciation night. Let their employees in for free, recognize them during the game. Also, make sure parents know who sponsors and encourage them to patron that business. Also if you and your coaches could start eating breakfast, whatever at the local diner and shoot the crap with the "brain trust" as I call them (the old men who drink coffee and know it all), it goes a long way too.

Find out what it cost for a small sign with PROUD SUPPORTER of ABC FOOTBALL in their window, and what a sign would cost to put on your field then add say $25-50 that would line your program's pockets and ask them to sponsor. Or we've had a local resturant pay for the sign, then donate pancakes for a breakfast. I found once you get one or two businesses, its easy to get others. Especially if there are competitors. "Well you know Bob, Jim's gas station is doing it, just didn't want you to be left out." I've have businesses ask for a bigger sign (and more $ for us) to outdo their competitor.

We played in a mud bowl Friday Night (got the W though), but our field looks like a cow pasture. Homecoming is this week. Anything we can do to make our field look decent? There is just ruts all over the place, dirt patches. Its going to be dry all week, so there is that. Any help would be appreciated.

Most of us are about 10 days in now. So how's it going? We have 24 kids, only 1 "bad" day of practice. We are leaps and bounds ahead of where we were last fall at this time. Hopefully we can keep progressing forward.

Kirkpatrick vs TC Williams in the final in lets the Dome in Indy. TC Williams discipline blows out Kirkpatrick. The Rock goes back to wearing tight t-shirts and working out after the game.

Dillion vs West Canyan at Jerry World in the Smi finals would be a shoot out, but Coach Taylor's team holds on, on a last second hail mary from Sacrasen to some WR you've never heard of. Plus the feature backs, Smash and Windell would go wild in this contest.
The Final, TC Williams grinds it out with the veer (which the Panthers havent seen much of) never letting the Dillion O on the field, and their D causes fits for the Panthers shutting down the running game.
Man, I am enjoying this thread.

Stole this from our local max preps site. Little fun today. Who would win in a league made up of tv/movie teams?
Odessa Permian Panthers - Friday Night Lights
Wingate Christian Crusaders - Blindside
Kirkpatrick Mustangs - Gridiron Gang
Shiloh Christian Eagles - Facing the Giants
T.L. Hannah Yellowjackets - Radio
West Canaan Coyotes - Varsity Blues
T.C. Williams Titans - Remember the Titans
Chicago Central Wildcats - Wildcats
Evening Shade Mules - Evening Shade Dillion Panthers -FNL TV
Dillion vs. TC Williams in the Finals for me.

Here in Missouri, we get this thing called "humidity". I don't know if you guys have ever heard of that in Cali, but it sucks balls. It's like heat that weighs you down and destroys your will. All kidding aside, morning practices do help a ton. I've always found that kids hate getting up early, but LOVE having the entire day to themselves. IMHO, practices often start out flatter when you have these practices at night. Kids are often tired (most of our kids have a job), and give off an "I really don't want to be here" vibe that spreads throughout the team. In the morning, our guys are so tired that they can't complain. I hear ya brother. I hate evening practice. I hate waiting all day to go to practice. I wanna come in get our work in and see my kid before she goes to bed.

Chicken for pregame meal. Wild Berry Skittles in my pocket. Skoal Apple. When we made our playoff run at my previous school I wore the same hoodie every week. First game the next season, no hoodie (its hot in MO in August), lost. Next week, hoodie back on (win). Didnt take it off till we lost in the playoffs again.

I hated two a days as a player, and don't really feel the need to do them as a coach. We'll practice for 3.5 hours in camp, 90 minutes of O, a 30 minute break, and 90 minutes of D. As we get closer to game week, probably drop to 2.5 hours-2 hours.

Just found out our week 1 opponent's head coach left the first of June, and their new guy takes over next week. I've spent the last month preping based on last years film, etc. The good news? We will see them in a scrimmage and they won't see us (we dont have one), and we are changing up what we do as well. The negitive is, not sure the best way to prepare moving forward. Still dont know the name of the new coach at this school. What have you guys done in the past? Prepare based on just generic defenses and a base spread (thats just an assumption, since everyone here runs spread). Just prep as normal from last years film till I get new stuff?

Pulled pork in the crock pot can be reused multiple ways too (get some chips and some cheese..NACHOS!). Eye of Round; use with mashed potatoes and gravy on night 1, night 2 make with mushrooms and egg noodles, you have a strognaoff. I can do this all day, I fancy myself as an amature chef. And yes, my wife is the same way, its popcorn and cereal if we want to eat.

20 days, 25, 50, doesnt matter, I don't get any lol. I hear the, "they are in a military school", they'll be in shape. You'd think, right? After spending 9 months of doing PT, they lay around all summer, playing video games and eating candy. I've tried to get them to stay for football camp, but after being away from home for 9 months, the caps are still in the air (required to attend graduation), and half of them are in the car to go home.

Coaches, I've taken over as the head coach at a boarding school. I've served as the OC for the last three years, so Im familar with the school climate. I'd like to start a discussion on the challanges you've faced, how you've over come them, etc. For starters, we are a military school. That provides challanges in itself. Second, our state (MO) allows 25 contact days during the summer. I have 0 because my players are all over the world (literally, Mexico, China to name a few). This year we start fall practice on 8/1. School starts 8/22. Our first game is 8/19. Several kids wont show up till 8/21, despite me telling them if they come out 8/22, they'll miss half the season (first game, plus 14 practices per state rules). What are some things you've done to combat these issues? What are some other problems you've had?

Am I the only one who hates polos? Thats the first thing I abolished for the coaching staff this year. Got some nice short sleeve mock turtles, and quarter zips. We NEVER match. We look totally rag tag. On the list of problems we have this is on the bottom but I hate it. The 5 of us never matched, not once. Different top, different pants. Its embarassing, and our previous coach didnt do a thing about it.

Coaches, Have a chance to propose a new locker room to our administration next week. This will not be a new building, but taking unused space and converting it. 3 years ago, we got brand new lockers in our old locker room, but some things are changing. The old locker room is closest to the new soccer complex, so soccer is going to take over our old locker room and we'll be moving into a new space and sharing with lacarose. Plus, the training room will be upstairs in the new locker room, and its a lot closer to our new practice field. How would you design the new space regarding layout? I want to build in a small coaches office that the LAX guy and I could share in our seasons, and an assistant coaches room where each coach could at least have a locker and we'd have enough room to meet and watch film as a staff. For the players I want it to be nice, and not so sterile, as our current locker room is. Does anyone have carpet in their facility? I was thinking about putting all the lockers around the outside and leaving the middle open. I have a friend in the electronics business who said he'd donate a tv in exchange for ad space, so that would be nice. Budget is pretty tight, but what would be on your wish list/must have

Norm Stewart, the Hall of Fame basketball coach told me once at a clinic when we were standing in line at the breakfast buffett of a Hilton this story; Bob Sunvold his top assistant (who became a head coach later), was saying to Norm during a rough patch, "Im with you coach, I'm just as invested as you are." Norm said he smiled, and said "I appreciate that Bob, but when you're the head coach, you just care more." I've carried that quote with me. An assistant can care about the program and kids just as much as the HC, but no one cares more. The two assistants I have currently do a great job (still looking for two more , but outside of my family, I focus on my program 24/7 and always thinking of how to get us where we need to go.

First game last year, Down 6-0 at half. Couldn't get anything going on offense ( I was OC) . Im taking a piss at halftime, one of the other coaches was too and I was just venting and really talking to myself (little back story: This guy was assigned to us, he didnt wanna be here, he was just a warm body in place. He couldnt run a drill, even warmups, the kids didnt respect him.) As I was finshed, he looked at me, "Hey man, chill out, its just for fun. What time will we be done you think?" I nearly lost it right there. I told the Head Coach on the bus ride home what happend, and said, "look, one of us isn't going to be at practice Monday. I'll let you choose." Never saw that guy again, not even on campus.

JV games Monday are where its at. At a previous school we'd play the Varsity Team Friday, then their JV on Monday. Let the jv coaches and kids work off the same game plan.
