Haven't got it yet... holding on. HC knows that if I get a slip, coaching at my new job would probably be necessary.

One school I was at, we had a family night once a month. We would rotate who's house it was at, but we would all meet on a sunday afternoon and have a BBQ or a dinner where everyone brought wife and kids (some guys brought dates or came solo if they were single).
By the end of the night, we would usually end up with all the coaches having a gameplan meeting or some kind of meeting for about an hour or two, all the wifes and girlfriends would watch a movie, or sit in the pool/hottub for a while, and the kids would be outside running around playing tag or whatever.
If you get a staff who is willing to put in the time one day a month, this can be a great thing to build trust within a staff.

I know that one of the reasons I thought I would never get married was because I would never find a woman who could understand my obsession with football. It takes up so much time and effort, most women get jealous if their husband is a position coach and has to spend X amount of hours at meetings and whatnot. Caused me a few issues in the past.
Then I met my wife 3 years ago. She had the same issues with men in her past. They always told her she needs to stop coaching and spend more time with them, so she would kick them to the curb. She is a varsity basketball coach, and puts in just as many hours towards that as I do toward football. She understands the obsession and the time commitment it takes. I know of a few guys I have coached with in the past, and still coach with, that their wives are making them be late for meeting A, or leave early from meeting B. Always upset (can't believe p!55ed is censored) that they have to do thier job. These are the guys telling me that when I have my first child in a couple of weeks, EVERYTHING will change. No more meetings, no more long film hours, etc... Unless my wife magically changes in 3 weeks, we already have a plan on how each of us has to handle the parent duties more or less depending upon the season. Might have to have my baby sleeping in the office while I supervise weights if my wife has basketball practice. As long as you both are on the same page, everything will work out. If not... could be a long day EVERY DAY.
If you don't think it is worth giving up on the sport because that is who you are... then you gotta find someone who likes who you are. Fighting about small/big school when it's at least 16 years in the future or more is pointless. Sounds like you guys are not on the same page on at least one major issue. I would suggest finding out if there are more before getting married. I feel for you because I've been there before.
My wife and I even planned our pregnancy around football and basketball. Had a 1.5 month window where she would only be about 8 months pregnant when basketball ended, and the baby would come early enough that it wouldn't interfere with spring football or summer football/basketball. If you can find a woman who understands, it doesn't have to be a big issue like I hear a lot of guys complaining about.

I put OC. This will be my 3rd year as an OC. Was a DC for 2 as well...
Only position I have not coached specifically is the OL. All the HC's I've worked for have coached the OL.

FLORIDA'S JOB IS TO WIN GAMES ON SATURDAYS!!!! Period. He knew that Meyer's offense had issues with QB's transitioning to the NFL before he signed. Florida fit his style perfectly. If he wanted to lose more games in college and have a shot at playing in the pros as a QB, he should have signed in the MAC. Played college football with below NFL caliber WR's, so he was forced to "learn" how to throw for 4 years, and he would be able to step in and play in the NFL.
It is not the college coach's job to get him ready for the NFL.
They Dwyer thing isn't because he doesn't have the physical ability to run the football... he can obviously do that. The problem is that he is years behind on the MENTAL aspects of playing RB in a pro-style offense. Not a lot of Counter-Trey or Power in the GAtech offense. He ran straight and had to break arm-tackles due to the scheme. We run GAtech's offense at our school, and that FB position is a very difficult one to get a kid for. And playing that position doesn't help you if you are transitioning into a pro-style offense. It will be a steep curve for him to learn the little mental aspects of the position.
I'll throw this out there since I took TONS of heat when I said it as a very young coach at the time. About 4-5 years ago (when Bush and White) were both entering the draft. I had to take sh!t from everybody because I said that if I were looking for a Running Back for an NFL team, I would take Lendale White before Reggie Bush because Lendale is an NFL-style RB, while Bush is more of a slot/isolate/gadget player in the NFL. No argument that Bush was 1000000 times better college RB than White, but the 2 games are so different, you have to take that into consideration when you project.
An example is the fact that Matt Cassel got drafted and is still in the NFL even though I can't remember if he actually threw a pass while at USC... His system and tools that he used at USC project him into the NFL as a much better prospect than GREAT college QB's such as Colt McCoy, Pat White, Tim Tebow, or any of the other great "QB's" at the college level. It's a different beast, and you need to look at the players fit into the system. Not just the physical tools.

Only a couple of days left... wanted to bump the thread so we can get organized before friday. I will be driving down after school on Friday which puts me into Costa at about 7:30 +/- 45 minutes depending on traffic. We can all meet friday night after all the speakers are finished or on Saturday night. I'm flexible. Let me know when would be the best time to meet up for all of you who are planning on going.

Our HC is there today... He's working the APEX table.
Marc Salazar is his name. Great guy. Anyone up there should definitely stop by and check out the new playbook software they have. Makes my animated powerpoint look like stone wall in a cave.

Where we are at there is no athletic period. We gotta do it the old-fashoned way... 6 AM workouts until 7:30, then that gives them enough time to shower (which none of them do) and get to class by 8:00.

We played the team that won our league and played for the Valley Title (State title for most) 2 years ago where they would line up in an unbalanced formation with the TE covered up by the Split End. All week long we worked on the defensive call, rotation and responsibilities vs. this look. One of them included BOTH safeties yelling, "Tight End is Ineligible! Tight End is Ineligible! He's Covered!"
Before the game, we mention to the officials that on film, they would line up in this formation and release the TE on a pass pattern, which is a penalty... blah blah blah. They all agree that they will make sure to find him and make sure he is eligible.
2nd series of the game. 4th and goal at the 9 yard line. They line up in unbalaced. Safeties do exactly what they are supposed to, rotate over to give us an extra run-defender on that side, and the Corner takes Split end into the back of endzone and across the back of it, the SS jumps the Fly-Man out in the flat, the FS picks up the wing running a "throwback" across to the weakside, and the short-corner spies the QB and makes sure to not let him run into the endzone. QB is getting closed in on and sees a man sitting on the hash with nobody within 10 yards... the TE.
Officials give the team a TD, and they are getting ready to let them attempt the PAT. I'm up in the booth having a moderate to severe stroke yelling into the headset to call timeout and talk to the officials. HC is screaming and losing his mind. He calls the timeout and I sprint out of the box in case I have to prevent him from getting tossed, as I am p!ssed off too.
HC is talking to the white-hat and telling him the situation. Illegal touching... blah blah blah. I remind him that the linesman on that side put his fist forward indicating that the outside WR was on the LOS and that he should be able to tell the white-hat that the TE was ineligible.
HC yelling at the linesman..."He was covered!"
Linesman replies... "No he wasn't coach. He was wide open."
I almost $h!t my pants!
Thank god the white-hat asked him if he put his fist forward or not, and when the linesman said he did, they overturned the TD and we got the ball back on downs.
By far the funniest thing I've ever heard somebody say on a football field (that is clean)
P.S. = I used to always tell my mom that pissed off wasn't a bad word... now I'm really p!ssed off.

They will do that if you teach in a "core" subject. That is what I am doing right now. I was a Chemistry Major & Math Minor, so I have been teaching here the last 3 years and working on my credential 1 class at a time. Finishing up this semester thank god. As far as the online programs go, I hear there is National and Pacific. If not, you have to find a school near you and get into the intern program, or else go to school full time for another year and get a teaching credential.
Good luck. CA is the hardest state to get a credential. I moved out here with only 2 classes left to get my full Utah Credential, but CA made me start all over again. Been teaching full time for the last 4 years and still don't have a credential. Have you passed the 3 PE CSETS?

Hope all the college coaches on this site consider this place a source for "connections". I am looking at making the jump to a GA job in the next 3-4 years if possible, and know that it is mostly who I know, and not what I know. I've been sending recruiting films to colleges on my own the last couple of years, and have been contacted by a few schools about obtaining more. I would like to think that some of the extra time and effort I put in will pay off eventually.

There are a ton you can do with wild west or cowboy terminology. "Sharp Shooter" = Highest GPA "A+ Corral" = All kids with GPA Above 3.5 Coming up with awards for the cheerleaders with this same system could be fun, but doing that for the "little ladies" would probably get you in trouble though...

"It's not the X's and O's... It's the Jimmys and Joes"
I remember we were facing a team a few years back, where all they had on their team was a Big Halfback. We gameplaned for him, and put a bunch of guys in the box, and thought that he wasn't good enough to hurt us... But good old Stanley Havili ended up having 4 TD's and running away from everyone we had. Started the following season as FB @ USC and has been a 3 year starter. KILLED US!!!

We are just trying to make the trip not cost $500 for a few of us. We will probably be having a lot of fun friday night after the games are over as well.

Hey everyone... our staff reserved a sky-box for the CA state games in LA this next Friday and Saturday, and we had a couple of coaches back out on us! We need to fill their spots or else the trip is going to be a lot more expensive than we thought. The itinerary for the weekend is:
1) Sky Box all day Friday with all food included 2) Sky Box on Saturday with all food included 3) Entrance to the NIKE CLINIC and admission to see Pete Carroll speak at the clinic
Cost for the box, Nike clinic, all food, and hotel are $235 per person. Once we get above a certain number of people, the cost will go down obviously, but for now that is what it is until we get up to the "magic number".
The rest of the guys going are great, and we will have a ton of fun while we're down there. Anyone interested please get ahold of me ASAP so we can get you down on the list.

Have to go to a camp and get a recomendation from that camp. There is a reason why you see so many of these big time programs on TV always having a walk-on kid kicking FG's. Colleges have gotten away with not recruiting them and being fine.
I do know of a few kids who have gotten offers and full-rides, but they kicked for 4 years in high school, and one of them had a 100% touchback percentage on every kickoff for 4 years. Plus he kicked more than 10 50+ FG's during HS without using a block. It was more of his Kickoff ability I believe that got him the scholarship, not necessarily his field goals. Coaches love to start the other team on the 20 each series.
We are hosting the Kohl's Kicker/Punter/Snapper camp here in Central CA this spring. If you and your kid are interested in coming out, I can get you the info on the clinic.

Dear Coach, Kohl's Kicking, Punting, and Snapping Camps will be coming to the Central Valley this spring and summer. Kohl's will offer a 1-Day Training Camp March 28th and private lessons March 29th at Golden West High School, Visalia. We will be back June 24th to hold another 1-Day Training Camp. We would ask that you let any kicker, punter, and snapper in your program (grades 8-12) know about these events and dates. You or anyone on your staff is also welcome to attend if you want to gain some insight into these specialty areas. Kohl's is coming to the Central Valley because we feel this is an area that has been overlooked for quite sometime. We feel that there are many athletes who can gain from attending a camp or private lesson of ours. The easiest way for you or your athletes to do research on us is to go to our website: www.kohlskicking.com and read up on the specifics of the events coming to your area. We will be sending you a brochure at the high school as well in the coming weeks and months ahead. Here is five quick points of interest about Kohl's; 1. Kohl's has been in existence for 11 years. Kohl's selects the top kickers and punters to play in the Under Amour All-American Game on ESPN. Kohl's writes articles and ranks athletes on ESPN.com. Kohl's Underclassman Challenge will have segments shown nationally on ESPN Jan. 2nd 2010. 2. Kohl's has over 400 campers currently playing college football. Kohl's had 11 campers in NFL camps during 2009. 3. Kohl's leads college camps for major BCS Conference Universities all over America 4. Jamie Kohl will be a lead kicking speaker at the AFCA convention this Jan in Orlando, FL. 5. Kohl's has a staff of 70 coaches who are experts in kicking, punting, snapping. If you have anymore questions you can email Kohl's at kpkc3@aol.com or call us at 262-549-9010 or 262-510-9010. Have a great Holiday season, Jamie Kohl If anybody is interested in coming out here for the camp, please contact me and I can probably hook up you and your players with a free place to stay! That should help with additional cost of coming down.cqmiller

If there is no accountability for not doing your job well... you won't do your job well. Kinda like all this stuff going on in schools nowadays! No accountability on kids for doing well on NCLB tests... they don't do them well. Amazing how a little bit of personal responsibility motivates. What has been the difference in LSUs defense since Pelini left? Last year they were awful!!!! They were not good enough on defense to help out they young QB they had and as a result, they were forced to throw in bad situations which led to Lee throwing more TD's to the wrong team than his own. This year they got better, but since Pelini left, they haven't been anywhere near the same. Chavis has a different mentality and style, and hopefully he can get them back on track, but Pelini is a heck of a defensive coach. He knows how to teach the kids how to play football. They haven't been as physical, aggressive, or smart since he left. Mistakes, out of position, passive at times. All things that the Nebraska defense is not!
