Hey guys, I'm looking for any coaches from the Sacramento or the Bay area to chat with. I have been contacted by a school that is looking for film on players from Sacramento to Bakersfield. I have some contacts in the southern part of the valley from Fresno down to Bakersfield, so I will be good on getting film from there, but I was going to ask for some help getting film from some northern schools.
Any of you guys who are north of the Fresno area who would be willing to help, I'd appreciate it if you would make contact with me.
Thanks guys.

Played against Haloti Ngata in HS (Highland HS in SLC, UT). By far the best I've played or coached against. Played against Patrick Crayton in College (NW Oklahoma State) Coached against Stanley Havili (4 year starting FB at USC) his senior year. Looked like pinball when he ran. 2 or 3 guys hit him and he would just bounce off and run forever. Coached Riley Nelson (Beat Fresno State his freshman year playing for Utah State, went on a mission and is now at BYU)
A handful of others that were amazing in HS but nobody would have heard of them after that.
Our HC coached against Alex Smith and Reggie Bush when they were both at Helix together.

Situation #1 = Kick .....You now get your chance to stop them from scoring on defense, and if they do score, you have another chance to win the game. Put the pressure on them to convert the 2pt conversion. If you have done your scouting correctly, then you should know their "short yardage" and "2pt" plays. Situation #2 = .....What kind of undefeated team? What kind of team do you have? Timeouts? Too much that could have a huge impact. If you have all 3 timeouts, then kick it and make them make the choice once they get the ball. Go for the win by throwing, or try to run it out and play for OT. If they try to pass and your defense is decent, one incompletion really puts them in a bind. If they try to run it out, you can use your 3 timeouts and make them punt. Give your reliable kicker a chance to win the game.

Coached at a school where we dressed 20 kids for varsity and 25 kids for JV. We didn't make decisions based on grade-level because we didn't have that luxury. Anyone with physical size and ability to play and not get crushed had to play on varsity. We ended up with 2 Freshman starting at guard, 3 sophomores starting at LB, and a freshman playing corner and WR.
If you are a school of only 300 - 500 kids and you are playing other schools your size, then you are all in the same boat. You do have to coach those really young kids a little differently, but we never had a problem.

We have a major commitment issue on the part of the kids at the school I'm at. They have excuse after excuse why they cannot come to weights or practices over the summer, so we only get to develop them IN-SEASON... We only get about 15-20 kids in the weightroom on a regular basis, go talk to other coaches during their weightlifting sessions and we see 50-60 in there. Then during the fall all the rumbling from the stands about how they don't understand why we can't coach our kids to win against the other schools.
Also, we timed 40's a couple of weeks ago... FASTEST kid on the whole team = 4.95 OMG!!!!

I'm no expert, but my understanding is that as long as they are not "recruiting" then there shouldn't be any issues. I have some of my former players who are now in college come help coach spring ball each year.

I love the DC mentality you have to get into... No nonsense, KILL EVERYBODY! Love it.
OC has to be more level-headed and methodical. Take 3 & Outs, wear down the defense, and stay patient.
I've done both, and I'm an OC now at the school I'm at. I can't say I prefer one over the other. They are completely different animals.

I know that the first thing every recruiter I've ever talked to asks me is...
"Does the kid have grades?"
They can't do ANYTHING with the kid anymore until he clears the NCAA Clearinghouse. No visits, offers, and I think contacts are even limited now. I'll have to check the new rules.

Our HC uses them on our team now, and this last season we had a down year, and we had DL peeling their stickers off to "protest" the OL having more than they did and a million other issues that would have never come up without them... It is just another thing to keep track of in an already extremely busy job.

If you play against any D1 kids at all, just have them compare their kids strength and speed to that kid
If not, you can just do the eyeball test...
If they look like a full-grown man and run like a full-grown deer, then they are D1 If they do not, then they aren't

ABSOLUTELY HATE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you give them out for performance, then your QB, HB, and MLB should have all of the stickers. Defenses are designed for the MLB to make all the plays, and offenses need the HB to run the ball for a ton of yds and TD's, and the QB to throw all TD's and no INT's.
If you give them out to everyone because the QB or HB got some yards or TD's or anything, then what is the point? Why not just have the helmets come with all the stickers on them? Giving them out arbitrarily for everything defeats the "accomplishment" aspect of it.
To me, it is about everyone on the team being equal... no 1 player should stand out more than another because of stickers on their helmet. The QB doesn't get his stickers without the everyone else doing their job, MLB doesn't make tackles without the DL eating blocks.

I am a firm believer that the OC has to be removed from the emotion and up in the box, while the defense is much more of an emotion-based and "feeling", which you can only get down on the field. Of course if the HC is a coordinator, he has to be on the field. Better find someone you COMPLETELY trust up there in the booth.

One of the best friendships I have now is with a former coach. I guess some would say that the line was blurry when I played for him, but it was never a question of who was in charge or anything. We both really knew each other and spent a ton of time together in meetings, on the field, in indy, etc... Once I graduated and went off to college, I kept in touch with him and 3 years ago when he go the HC job out here in CA, I moved here to be his DC. Now we are friends and it is a great friendship.
I have heard many administrators warn about not getting too close to the kids and keeping a large distance between them, but to me, if you really want to impact their lives in a positive way, you have to become close with them. I have had position meetings at my house where all the kids come over and we play playstation and swim in the pool. It builds a trust and a friendship between the players and yourself, but it has never crossed the line. I have a player getting ready to start his sophomore year at a juco out here and we still talk once or twice a month. I wouldn't say we are "bff's" or anything, but I would say that we have a friendship that has carried past his days of playing for me. Hopefully when he is done playing, I can get him to help me coach the same way my coach did.

I hated not being able to play FS when I was a senior because I was the starting QB. Played FS my junior year and started at WR because we had a senior QB. Then I am the starting QB and all of a sudden I'm not allowed to play defense.
Haven't run into a situation where my QB could play defense the last few years so haven't had to worry about it, and the school I'm at now is a 2-platoon.

lol... with all the doctors and everyone coming in and out, and the fact that we were there for 4 days, they made me take a break to get out of there for a while.
That's why we both work and coach... If we were together all day every day we would probably kill each other.

We use the "Coaching for Life" program as well as the "Character Counts". Each week there is a character quality we teach, and we try to work the stories and quality into everything we do during the week. They have pre-made lessons where there are stories and questions to ask the kids, and there is always room for improv on top of the stories.
This last year we had a crazy group where we had a 3.5 GPA as a team and we did not have any really bad kids, but we had bad football players. Been taking heat about how if we wouldn't teach the character we could "get to more" at practice. We are the only program in the area doing anything like it, so we have a lot of naysayers floating around. We really think that teaching them how to make better decisions and being better people is more important than anything else they can learn on the practice field.

Meeting Character Education Dynamic Stretching = 10-15 yards of what I guess used to be called "agilities" (High-knees, lunges, karayoke, etc...). Basically just getting stretching done without sitting in a line and stretching.

Kids these days (now I feel old) have no work-ethic and their parents don't make them do anything they don't "feel like". They are perfectly happy using their Iphone for everything and not actually having to do anything that requires discipline, hard work, and a little bit of effort. I'm seeing the same situation out here in CA.
Kids that are 6'4" 260 lbs not playing football because they say, "but I would have to like practice everyday and lift weights..." Or the kid who isn't coming out this year because his mom thinks that he should be the QB, but last year didn't come to 1 quarterback meeting the entire season. Didn't know any of the routes and didn't know any of the reads but it was our fault because we apparently "don't like him".
I hope that it changes soon, because there is a serious issue with kids just being "water", and taking the path of least resistance. The school I'm at now will graduate 500 kids this year and only about 25 of them will ever graduate from college. They miss 20+ days of school a semester for anything from "ski-trips" to a "headache". Everything is "excused" by the parents and then they don't understand why the kid doesn't know how to pass the science class that he was only there for 1/2 of. Amazing how he only knows 1/2 of the stuff he was supposed to learn. Don't know how that happened.
I just turned 27 yesterday, and I am exactly 10 years older than the kids that will be our seniors this next year... My friends parents and my parents would have whipped our tails if we did any of this stuff. Feel older each and every day.

I know that a few years back my buddy took over a program that had NEVER had a winning record and NEVER won more than 2 games in a season. He never would have taken the job if he did not know that I was there as the coordinator on Defense. If you do not have both coordinators (one is usually HC in HS) on the same page, then you have no chance of getting the kids to buy in.
I would suggest finding guys with less football knowledge, but are willing to learn and buy into what you are trying to do. I'd rather teach guys who are willing than fight guys who aren't. I don't care how much they think they know. If you are a "run-the-ball-and-play-solid-defense" kind of guy, you don't go hire June Jones or Mike Leach to call your offense. To much fighting within the staff.
Sounds to me that he wants the title and the respect, but wants to put in none of the work. Hope the kid isn't that way, or you may have a headache no matter what happens.

Probably the best football player to come out of my alma matter... Utah State. He is a legend in the state of Utah and even bigger up in Logan.
