Hi Guys,
Im here in northern CA. College student, going to graduate in 2011. There is a serious chance the head football job could open up here after next season, so i want to do everything i can to be able to teach starting in Fall 2011 so i can increase my chances of getting the head job (school would prefer on camus teacher)
Im majoring in PE, planning on being a PE teacher
I have heard in CA they will hire you without having credentials as long as you are working on it.
Whats the fastest easiest way of getting credentialed. I will graduate in June 2011, and want to teach in Sept 2011.
Are there any online programs i could get credentialed through, so i can coach and teach while working on the credentials?
Thanks for any help/advice

They will do that if you teach in a "core" subject. That is what I am doing right now. I was a Chemistry Major & Math Minor, so I have been teaching here the last 3 years and working on my credential 1 class at a time. Finishing up this semester thank god. As far as the online programs go, I hear there is National and Pacific. If not, you have to find a school near you and get into the intern program, or else go to school full time for another year and get a teaching credential.
Good luck. CA is the hardest state to get a credential. I moved out here with only 2 classes left to get my full Utah Credential, but CA made me start all over again. Been teaching full time for the last 4 years and still don't have a credential. Have you passed the 3 PE CSETS?

Coach, I know that CSUEB's program starts (or at least did 2 years ago) in summer and is a 1 year program. It may be possible for them to work something out with your school so your can student-teach there in fall (depending on your district, they may already work with them). I almost did this 2 years ago but ended up going to Sac st. instead. You would probably do a lot of prep work type stuff in summer and then start in fall.
A lot of it will depend on your college and school district communicating with each other to make this work, and you will most likely have to be the one that facilitates that communication. I know at least one guy who got a HC job while finishing on his credential but I don't know if he was just starting (may have had a semester under his belt already). Will definitely be a lot of work teaching, being a HC, and all the BS that student teaching can entail, but if you feel you're ready you should look into it.

Best bet might be a SPED credential, imo. My buddy is coaching at our rival HS, has been for like 3 years now and he's still finishing his SPED credential. Shoot, he just took the US constitution test a few weeks ago (I had to do it at the same time).
Make sure you knock out all your paperwork during the spring. Have all of it done far before it's even needed. I'm a bit of a slap about paperwork and it hasn't cost me, but it's created a lot of unnecessary stress.
You might be able to start taking classes toward your credential while you're finishing your undergrad, really depends on where you are and what your status is towards your major, graduation, etc.
Also, start getting the people necessary for your hiring on your side FAST, like, yesterday. Principal, APs, Dept Chairs, district folks, anyone you can get to believe that hiring you would be a good thing. May not result in you getting the gig, but it'll only lead to good things.

National university used to offer a 10 month credential rpogram online. National is expensive but can be worth it.

I was hird on an emergencey license and worked on my credentials while teaching weight training! California is tough, but it is way easier then the state of Oregon. I taught and coached at the College level for 2.5 years and wanted to move down to a local high school and the state of Oregon's Licensure Board (TSPC) told me I would need to go get another masters degree that would also give me my teaching credential.
I went through University of Phoenix Online! It was the fastest and Cheapest at the time. I haven't looked lately but it would be worth while to check all options. Also take your PE Praxis as soon as possible! Here in Oregon you have to take and pass all 3 PE Praxis test.

CA doesn't accept the Praxis... must take the California version (CSET). There are 3 of them for PE. Also, CA did away with emergency credentials a few years back.

a lot of hoops to jump through for CA..about to finish up my student teaching and get my credential and i found out that i have to wait until march as i have to resubmit an assignment and wait to get the results back before i can get the credential.
depends on where you want to work but in many places jobs are hard to come by. im in la county and there is nothing here, many districts arent even hiring any more subs, you have to move out to the more rural areas to find work.

One of our assistants worked a deal where he got hired as a teacher while he was getting his credential through University of Phoenix. This allowed him to get paid.
