I am looking for ideas that can help me better structure our Thursday Walk Through Practice (Game Friday). We usually run through a simulated game from Kickoff to Victory Formation. We go over subs, Openers, Checks, etc. My issue is it seems like a waste of time. I am thinking of doing some of the same things: Special Teams, Openers, Defensive Checks and then looking for something more productive. Ideas are watching Film as a team, having a true light practice, including Indy.
I am looking for what you guys do that I may be able to use to better our Pregame Practice.
Thanks

Hope that helps.

On Thursdays we want to review Pre-Game routine, game plan, and special situations.
It is more like a practice than a "Mock Game" that some guys do because I don't want to waste a lot of time changing personnel (including scrimmage vests).
We do our Pre-Pre Game Specialties (kicking, passing) for 15 minutes. OL walks through Pass Pros, Draw(s), Screens.
We then do our Pre-Game with abbreviated Team (one play 1s, one play 2s). Water break after Individual-before Team.
After another water break, Next is Team Defense, starting with all Kicking Game one rep each, then water break. We then run 12 opponents' plays against our First Defense from -40, then four plays against our Goalline Defense.
After a break ("Halftime"), we do Team Offense, starting with all Kicking Game one rep each (including "Field Goal on the ball" and taking a Safety), then water break.
We then drive up and down the field (D&D) twice, substituting second possession those who may play Friday, especially skill positions; do GL Offense one series, 2-point plays, 2-Minute Offense including Last Play, and Kill the Clock procedure.
I then remind them of What the Game means to Us, and What We Must Do to Win before dismissing them.
Have not done it in the past but am considering watching opponents' film afterwards because we have a lot of down time between end of practice (4:45 pm) and JV game (starts 6:30 pm).

One VERY important thing that I do on Thursdays is Special Teams depth chart work. Here is how I do it:
One thing that I’ve done since starting as a Head Coach back in 2003 the day before a game is spending about 4 minutes going through our Special Teams Depth Chart. We do this right before practice starts. Here is how I do this, it will REALLY help your Special Teams organization!!
1. I line up the whole team on the goal line, shoulder to shoulder facing me. Helmets strapped up and ready for practice.
2. I stand on the 10 yard line with my coaching staff.
3. I will yell out “Kickoff Team.” Then the entire team echos back “Kickoff Team.” I might say this 2-4 times. We have fun with it, and it helps the kids to focus up on this mental, day before the game walk through practice.
4. The 11 kids on the kickoff team come out to the 5 yard line. Whoever the kickoff coach is will count them, and make sure that we have the right 11 kids. I have all of those names on my game day card, which I have at practice with me. Early in the season, we will spend the extra time calling out those names.

5. If we make the count and are missing someone, then we go through the kickoff team roster on my call sheet to see who we are missing.
6. We work our way through all 6 special teams this way: kickoff, kick return, punt, punt return, PAT, PAT defense.
This drill has been VERY good for us because it gets all of the Special Teams ready to go. I have rarely had 10 guys in the huddle on game day because of this time spent. It has eliminated a lot of issues. Trust me, it’s worth the 5 minutes of time. Nothing more that I hate as the Head Coach than having to scramble and look for that one kid on the kickoff team right after we score a touchdown!! This helps to combat that.
I will also say “Okay, R3 is hurt, Chuck your down, get out of here.” Then I expect the backup R3 to step up in to that spot. We might do this for 4-5 guys per Special Team during this period too.

I have used the script below for around 8 years now and it has really helped making sure we cover all possible scenarios during Thursdays practice.
Pre-Game Script
1) First Kick Off Return (call out subs) 2) First Offense: ball on -25 yard line (10 play drive and score) 3) P.A.T. Team (kick P.A.T.) 4) First Kick Off Team (call out subs) 5) First Defense: ball on opponent -25 yard line (Force them to punt) 6) Punt Return Team 7) First Offense: Get all subs in that will play in game that week. Ball on -25 yard line (3 plays and out). 8) Punt Team (Run a fake and get a first down) 9) Same Offense as last series (3 downs and out) 10) Punt Team: Punt ball into opponent’s territory. (Keep ball out of the end zone) 11) First Defense: Ball on opponent’s -1 yard line (3 downs and force them to punt) 12) Punt Return: Punt block (Get safety) 13) Kick Off Return after safety: Ball punted from -20 yard line (Front line on -32 yard line) 14) Punt Team: Ball on -1 yard line. Tight Punt (inside protection), punt and cover. Reset and punt again (this time take safety) 15) Kick Off Team: Sub punter for kicker (Kick from -20 yard line) 16) Kick Off Team: Onside kick and recover kick 17) First Offense: Ball on +48 yard line. (Run 3 plays to get to the +15 yard line) 18) Field Goal Team: Kick FG 19) First Offense: 2 minute drill vs. air on 25 yard line (score TD and repeat kick) 20) First Offense/First Defense 2-point play (Score and defend against) 21) Hands Team: Recover onside kick 22) First Offense: Kill clock mode. Must get first down to win game (Stay in bounds) 23) First Offense: Victory Formation (take snap and protect QB) It takes us around 1 hr to complete. Adjusted for issues week to week.

bigcroz, Do you go through air? Sorry I missed this before. But to answer your question we go against scout O and D for most of it. We do go on air for parts though.
