put yellow paint down the back of your coat and you'll be ok. I have several friends who made the move -- some miss friday nights but not tuesday, wednesday, saturday, sunday... and of course they like the extra $$$$ to paraphrase bear bryant - Don't coach unless you can't live without it.

I have used scramble for awhile. The players know where they have to be on "set" and can line up anywhere they want. Defenses tend to become very vanilla when they see so many formations.

Guess I don't understand the original post -- WHY - cuz I want to learn something either we are interested in putting in or interested in stopping something that an opponent does.

Very interesting discussion that you could not have on a regular high school football chat line -- Many, (most) coaches in our State have the kids do a required number of lifts eventhough it very specifically says not to in the State Handbook. It does come down to Keeping up with the Joneses -- when the other schools in the conference are making it mandatory it is difficult not to do it and remain competitive. I do something similar to Champ in that I award the helmet stripes when they get a certain number of lifts in. Also, the only ones who do the program can be the team captains on varsity or j-v. I put asteriks next their names in the program if they lifted.I am letting those kids that do not get in the lifts make it up when two-a-days start but haven't decided on what they will do. All those are positive things designed to reward the kids but as has been mentioned -- what do you do with the kids that doesn't lift- but is so much better than the others that he should start. If you don't play him are you cutting off your nose to spite your face???

hmmm, I loved reading Arnsbarger's book about the two-level defense. Used a scaled down version for several years -- great defense when you had good corners - not so good when you didn't.

One of the best things about football is that there are so many positions and situations that a kid can play. If I have a senior that has worked hard he is going to find a pace to play. It may be left tackle on the PAT team, or wing on the kickoff, or third TE is special sets, but I'll find a way to get a senior who deserves it on the field even if he's doesn't have the skills to beat out an underclassmen as a starter.

Maybe they don't understand english?!?!? Sorry, couldn't resist...
Are they losing in the second half because of lack of strength or conditioning? Conditioning you can do something about fairly quickly - strength may take more time.
Maybe situational practice - have teaching periods where you are are protecting a lead and emphasize playing hard.

I'm surprised the school district/administrators allowed the guy to use the school facility and charge the kids extra for it when the same facility was already being offered by the school and staff for nothing. Do school music teachers get to charge their kids for afterschool lessons? Do teachers that stay afterschool and tutors get to charge the kids $$$. Hmmm, maybe they do.

OK, I know I'm going to blasted for this but thats part of the fun of a message board.
I've read several times in here where the coach allows the team to decide the punishment if a player has to be disciplined. To me, this has always been a cop out. USUALLY, if it is a great player that the kids sort of like, they will reinstate the kid. Everybody wants to win. I think its a way for a coach to say. "It wasn't my choice, the team wanted him back".
Been part of coaching staffs where the head coach "consulted" the seniors who let a kid back on the team -- only to have the kid screw up again and embarrass the program again.
what are your thoughts...
By the way, i love this message board and think its a great coaching tool -- so be kind...

You better have coaches sitting throughout the bus. There's been too many incidents of hazing on a bus not to. If its a bad hazing situation its not just the kids that will get in trouble - coaches get fired over poor supervision.

I actually made the first ball on a string for defensive line coaches. Always ticked me off when d-line coaches had their drills start on "hut" - or worse a whistle!
I also was the first person ever to have a watch attached to the clipboard. One salesmen saw my crude model at a football clinic and the next year had them manufactured. I coulda been rich$$$$$$!
Lets see- had old sun glasses painted so that the kids could not see out of them and had them run their pass routes. Got them to focus on their proper steps.
I also invented the internet with Al Gore.

kinda sad, hunh
Also, EVERYONE on the staff calls me sir - the little whippersnappers...

nobody is going to get hurt if a second team is playing a first team in basketball or soccer but it could definately happen in football. Our head coach would definately not take out his starters when we were getting beat by the 35 point rule. He was very concerned about not getting shut out. We scored vs their JV - guess that was a moral victory.

Missouri is 35 points after half -- have been on both sides of it and i guess I think its a good rule. If its more than a 35 point margin neither team gets much out of it. The losing team usually keeps its good kids in and the winning team feels with such a big lead they need to take out their starters - I've seen some injuries occur in that instance.
also agree that some teams use it as a motivation - One of Missouri's state champion teams would bragged that it "turbo clocked" every team on their schedule ...

interesting thread -- I have had to change my offensive thinking this past year- we were a young team who had a very undersized line - we simply couldn't run the running game we had in the past - likewise we didn't have a QB that we wanted to run the option with. Forced to change our emphasis to the shotgun spread which I had never run. (i'd give my self a C for the year)
Somebody asked whether it took the coaches or players longer to buy into a new system - I would say definately the coaches. I've been run first coach all my life and this year was forced to pass to set up the run. A real mind switch.

I have a blast with fantasy football -- I don't spend a lot of time on it because i'm so busy but i still enjoy it. i understand the negatives also - but I still like cheering for Gonzalez to get the ball in the red zone!

WE video but not near enough. Early in the year or even in camp we try to video tackling drill so the kids can see what we're trying to coach. We try to video 1/2 line stuff as well as team stuff but as I said, we don't do it enough. This year I hope to change that.
