I think the parents have every right to hold their kid out of sports.

Interesting...
Dead - Rockne, Lombardi, Paul Brown
Living - By going to clinics I have already enjoyed talking to so many great coaches such as Walsh, Osborne, Deberry, Robinson, Holtz, Raymond, Switzer, ...
so I'm going to go with those I haven't had the pleasure to see (yet!) Gagliardi, Meyer, any of Buddy Ryan's boys...

Love some parts of the winged-t. Plusses - you can win with lesser personel. With the misdirection - sometimes you don't have to block very well for the offense to work. I have used both multiple formation and single formation. We ended one year in the playoffs and by the end of the just had one formation. Obviously no formation tendencies.

I call and devise the offense--- I am involved with the defensive game planning but the DC makes the calls in the game.

Airman referenced he'd go with a bunch of Rudy's ... Sidebar - Rudy wouldn't have been eligible to play - didn't have a 3.0
Going through the same thing here - flunk one class and you're out- i've just seen football/sports do some great things or kids that wouldn't have the opportunities if they couldn't be on the team..

Thanks for the comments -- I prefer live blocking after you have taught fundamentals that's why i don't like the sled. As for the blaster/gauntlet - i know you can simulate that with the two line gauntlet drill but its not quite the same. still haven't decided what to do...

Old School!?! also used the tires as a blaster --- before we got smart and drilled holes in the bottom the water would collect and the wasps would come. THAT did get the backs running through them pretty quick. The tires pretty much shredded the practice jerseys. And we had one kid get stuck that may still be out there.
I think I would use the guantlet everyday - but my line coaches insist they would rather have a sled. I don't really like sleds except for conditioning...

If you didn't have either one - would you buy a blaster or a sled. We have a four man sled with the low dummies - but you can't really drive it -- more for d-line fireouts. also have a wooden sled that we sometimes use for conditioning - but not really for firing out and hitting. Lets see, other equipment - a good chute set up. have a one man sled. Now, would you buy a good sled or would you buy a blaster -- or none of the above ?!?!? blasters - what type are the best -- had the old smitty blaster decades ago -- what is the best now?

I wish I could see Coach Gagliardi's team warm up -- from what i've read they do jumping jack not jumping jacks. The longer I'm in it (28 years) the more I think the pregame warmup is OVER rated...

Coaches, I appreciate your input - those of you that give the players an hour off - do they do anything during that break- video, chalktalk or do they get that as time off. One coach mentioned that his boosters fed the kids - what do some of the other programs do - have the kids bring snacks?

Because our district is spread out we are forced to use the two practices back-to-back instead of one in the morning and one at night. You coaches that use the two in one practices when do you do it - morning or evening? Also give me an idea of how you format the time. Two practices with a break in between?, Do you try to lift during two-a-days?
Last season we practiced late because of coaching conflicts and went from 4-9 pm with a break. Was not effective as when 4 pm rolled around the heat index was extreme. We were one of several teams forced to use the gym for our first practice. Got some things done but still not as effective as being able to go outside.
Interested to hear how some of you other coaches schedule two-a-days.

easier way to make hoops - garden hose with proper diameter. Safer - cuz if the kids step on they won't twist an ankle -and a little easier to store...

Our play calls got way too long this season - hopefully we can work it out next year -- we ran shotgun/winged-t and two of backs couldn't block for each other so we had to develop numerous formations to get the right guys blocking for each other. Way too many formations so I'm sure we had very strong formation tendencies...

I guess everybody has the same amount of time - but doesn't it take a LOT of time to make individual wristbands for everybody? Explain how you (or who) does it.

yz - I feel for you -- in fact when I looked at your post I had to check to see if I wrote it. Very frustrating isn't it -- you have to keep stressing TACKLING. and as you know you have to convince them to hit the weightroom. So many times weak kids will back off from making a tackle because (probably rightly so) they are afraid of getting hurt by those that are stronger than them. We struggled this year and usually had people in the right position but they could not bring the ballcarrier down. We too did tackling drills out the wazoo. We didn't do much all live in practices because we were short on numbers as it was. Finally convinced to go live during week 7 and we get our #1 rB hurt. lots of catch-22's out there. good luck and don't give up (probably talking to myself as much as you!)

I've been asked to help a local team that is starting a minor league arena ball team. I haven't had any success with google as far as strategies, plays, etc. Can anybody direct me where to start? Mainly interested on the offensive side.

Y'all are downing "free day" as a BAD thing! By the way , we call it Individual Interest Day - sounds better to the REAL educators inthe building. We do some "free days" after we have introduced other activities - Not really "free days" cause the students are given options. One day options may be volleyball, basketball, walking or table tennis -- another day may be weightroom, flag football, hackeysack or using the track. Yeah, they are free days but if you think you can have sixty kids doing different things and not be supervising you are wrong. Besides, in this highly organized world its good to have the students make up their own games and do what they want once in awhile.
OK, let the barrages begin...

Have had some good games this year but now have lost a couple in a row wth our best opponents yet to come.
The morning after a loss I feel as though I have been a fifteen round knockout boxing match -- getting older - I don't remember feeling like this before...physcially beat up
Just thought I'd write - great football board ---

How many football message board posters does it take to change a light bulb ??
1 to change the light bulb and to post that the light bulb has been changed
14 to share similar experiences of changing light bulbs and how the light bulb could have been changed differently
7 to caution about the dangers of changing light bulbs
6 to argue over whether it's "lightbulb" or "light bulb"
Another 6 to condemn those 6 as stupid
2 industry professionals to inform the group that the proper term is "lamp"
15 know-it-alls who claim they were in the industry, and that "light bulb" is perfectly correct
19 to post that this forum is not about light bulbs and to please take this discussion to a light bulb forum
11 to defend the posting to this forum saying that we all use light bulbs and therefore the posts are relevant to this forum
36 to debate which method of changing light bulbs is superior, where to buy the best light bulbs, what brand of light bulbs work best for this technique and what brands are faulty
5 People to post pics of their own light bulbs
15 People to post "I can't see S$%^!" and their own light bulbs
7 to post URL's where one can see examples of different light bulbs
4 to post that the URL's were posted incorrectly and then post the corrected URL's
13 to link all posts to date, quote them in their entirety including all headers and signatures, and add "Me too"
5 to post to the group that they will no longer post because they cannot handle the light bulb controversy
4 to say "Didn't we go through this already a short time ago?"
13 to say "Do a search on light bulbs before posting questions about light bulbs"
1 to bring politics into the discussion by adding that George W. isn't the brightest bulb.
4 more to get into personal attacks over their political views.
1 moderator to delete the light bulb thread.

Beardc - don't bet that you have the smallest football office in the history...!?!?
At one school my office was a large cabinet in a short hallway between the teacher's lounge and teacher's john.
Like probably everyone on this board - the positives outweigh the negatives or we wouldn't still be in the business.
Different school - first weightroom is now a closet that they store the basketball scoreboard, second weightroom was inside a cage inside the boys lockeroom - now we have a pretty nice facility

good luck -- having a son on your team can be a great blessing or it can be a really bad experience. I have worked with a coach that has let the situation tear apart both the team and the coaching staff.
