Have any of you left coaching for an administration position?
Was it a big adjustment? Do you miss Friday Nights? Would you leave administration to return to coaching? Any other thoughts?

Ogie, one of our old coaches that helps here is a retired principal from the public system, where his teams won state titles at two different schools. He kept on coaching as an administrator.

put yellow paint down the back of your coat and you'll be ok. I have several friends who made the move -- some miss friday nights but not tuesday, wednesday, saturday, sunday... and of course they like the extra $$$$ to paraphrase bear bryant - Don't coach unless you can't live without it.

We need more former coaches in administration. We need less politicians mandating (unfunded, or at least underfunded) educational reforms.
In our state it is common for administrators to be prohibited from taking coaching positions by the teachers' contracts.

Have been AD and Head Football for 12 years at 2 high schools. Both positions have been great, especially at my current school where the upper administration sees the value of a strong athletic program.
I just "traded" the AD job for the Dean of Student's - I'm still head football. The Admin. wanted a "tougher" Dean (we are a private school). One thing I can tell you is I won't miss the home game supervisory duties till all hours and on Saturdays.
Like the man said - Don't give up coaching unless you can live without it!

That would be an ideal situation, but they won't let you do that in most 4 and 5A schools in TX. It is one or the other in my situation. Great thoughts fellas. Tog, I think they wanted me to grow some balls for this school. The Pro and Con list provided no more insight then when I first thinking about the idea.

Wow, could you still be a part of coaching, even like an asst. role? Sounds like a good job opportunity!

Let me put it this way-
The best AD I have ever had- former football coac
The worst AD I have ever had- some random administrator that hadn't coached or taught a day in his life.

Ogie, since I'm not a teacher and have never been employed by a school system, I'm not sure about all the options available for advancement in this profession but heres a few thoughts. In our area here, most of the long tenured supts. came from the principal or asst principal ranks at one of the 3 schools. At least one in the past 30 years was a coach early in his career. The advance or decline of the HS sports, band and other extra-curricular activities seemed to directly relate to the current supt's support or lack of it(especially in football). An example is we had a good football program here, administation changed, the support was no longer there, the good coaches moved on to greener pastures and the sports teams suffered. Community and parents get fired up, new administration comes in, supports the teachers and coaches, we get better coaching and the sports teams do well again! Its been an unending cycle. So, I guess the question is, what are your long term ambitions and where best can you help the game you love? Don't know ogie, its like the chicken and the egg deal?
