When I was a youth - three years out of college - I applied for two head coaching jobs. At one of the interviews I talked to the junior high coach who was much more experienced than I was. He asked what I was planning to run on offense and defense. He then explained what he was going to run on the junior high level regardless of what I was going to do at the varsity. He had much more pull than I was going to have as the head coach.
I was offered both jobs and wisely took the other position. It worked out OK - 47 years in the business.

I’ve got an extra $500 or so if it’s out on CD.

I get a couple of pairs of Merrill’s every year. I’m a big person and I need good shoes to make it through the season. Kind of expensive but worth it.

Unfortunately, some are known as state finalists.

Enjoy the experience! My first two years as a head coach we were in this situation. A plus is that you only have one other coach you have to work with. I’ve been on staffs with nine assistants and having additional coaches didn’t guarantee a better product. Not a lot of back biting or office politics when there’s only two of you!

Hire “professional” cheerleaders like the movie The Replacements?

What league was it that had players sprint recover the ball to determine who got the ball. Fun to watch but had some hellacious injuries that put a stop to it. I’d favor the hs/NCAA overtime procedure to what the nfl does.

I used to be kinda crunk. As I stayed in the profession I became less crunk. My last year in the press box I was crunkless.

I just resigned an hour ago. Finished 45 years. I hope I don’t miss it too much…

I once worked for a coach who used a man defense exclusively. We got beat by a team whose best receiver was plain out better than our best defensive back. We got beat and the coach’s reaction was if our best got beat by their best there was nothing we could do about it. I thought that was asinine. Plan B - maybe a man with safety help would have given us a better chance to win.

If you decide you’re going to go for it on most 4th downs it helps tremendously with your 3rd down calls!

Coach, congratulations on your career. I’m in year 45 and am in the same boat. Probably my last season. My health problems have made it so I no longer can give all I should. Had a bout with cancer and I’m pretty much exhausted all the time. I love coaching football and will miss it. Mostly the camaraderie of the coaches office and the lockerroom.

Friday our opponent chose to kick. Ref asked him three times if he was sure that’s what he wanted. Only two kickoffs they made… We tell our captains we want to defer. If that’s not available we want the ball. And then I make them repeat it to me.

You asked two very different questions. If you shrink the field the defense gets an edge. If you keep the same dimension but narrow the hashmarks the offense gets an advantage.

Sturgis Scoopers -- As was often the case, as new forts and camps were set up on the western frontier, certain business enterprises would follow after them, quickly setting up little establishments that served the purpose of “scooping” the soldiers of their valuables.
Shortly, gambling halls, saloons, and houses of ill repute or brothels would serve to separate the soldiers from their earnings.

YES. I’m not the head coach so I don’t know what we are going to do. We can take back some the helmets the JH has but that leaves them without enough helmets. Riddell indicated we would not be getting helmets until October.

To piggy back on the field conditions - Wellington MO once had their field set so if you kicked an extra point on one end it would go into a cornfield and you kicked the other way it would go down a steep hill. Wentworth military visitors stand consisted of a small, maybe four row bleachers that were about ten feet from the sidelines. Coached in a JV game that was a practice field and only had one set of goalposts and had a slanted field so you would literally be either running up or down field. We had a JV kicker that we wanted to let kick an extra point and I foolishly switched positions on the field for the kick - and lost our downfield advantage!

I did less pregame the longer I was a head coach. Eventually, the specialists would start at 6:20. Then warm up in offensive group - short offensive group, then short defensive group. We didn’t do team - didn’t see a reason to show opponents snap count or any adjustments we made for the week. Ended up with substitution session so everyone knew who was on the various special teams. At 6:45 the players would put on the shoulder pads and we’d be ready for the national anthem. Maybe a brief pregame speech and we’d be ready to go.

We did for a couple of years. Our teams were very successful and they and the community bought into it. I can't imagine trying that on a team/program that wasn't successful.
I don't think its necessary anymore especially with hudl. The kids that would have gotten something out of a Saturday film session will watch it on their own. And as others have said, there is so much going on that some kids will end up missing Saturday stuff. Farming, hunting, marching band, college visits, work - and then you as a coach have to decide which are OK and which are not. I don't think its worth the headaches.
Our staff still meets Saturday morning but I wish we had Saturday off to watch HUDL on our own before meeting as a staff. It used to be you couldn't see if your assistants were watching film but now you can. You can also designate coaches to fill out part of hudl review or scout so you know the coaches are seeing necessary film.

OK, I got a possible new development - how about an increase in the passing game with non-quarterbacks throwing the ball. Not the one a game HB pass but more of a 5-10 times a game. Passes by RB, jets, WR double passes. Have QB eligible to slow man coverage. Playground football at an organized level. What do you think?

Verbiage - punt return team and the ball hits the ground - you want the kids to get away . I’ve heard coaches teach “ Peter”, “hot”, “poison”. After 40 years of coaching, we came up with a breakthrough innovation and yell “GET AWAY”

I was taught that in a pe major class. Best advice there is. Sadly, some coaches at all levels don't abide by the lesson...
