Yelling

I'm a varsity coach (not a yeller) but I'm also an Athletic Director of a youth league. This is the theory I've came up with for Yeller's, at least at the youth level.
Football = Tough + The fact I don't know sh!t about football = I need to be a yeller to sound tough = I at least sound tough so maybe people will think I know about football. ;D

At least you will have a freshman team. Our program has officially pulled the plug on our JV team due to lack of numbers. Talent or no talent, we'd take 20 kids from the chess club, yugioh club, or pokemon club if it ment we would have a team

Ours will be this Thurs/Fri, we will not separate by position either. Our plan is to have even groups of kids rotating through each position station to get a little taste of it all.
I would also recommend an obstacle course that is football related. Last year we had a course that stretched out the entire length of the field. We timed the kids and they loved it!
We also end ours with a BBQ

Went down to the middle school to watch a game. We were on defense and the other team was rolling their QB out over and over again breaking contain. He had the option to throw or run every play. So how does the coach adjust or coach em up??? He yells at the top of his lungs...with a lolly pop in his mouth no less... "ARE YOU GUYS GONNA GET AFTER THAT QUARTERBACK OR WHAAAAAAT!!!!" What great instruction

We are going to be soph heavy this year on our varsity team. We are a pretty small school so this is not out of the norm for us.
The good news is, this soph group of kids have been playing together a long time and are a really solid group. Looking foward to this years mix of upper class and soph's.

Great posts by these coaches!
One of my good friends that used to coach with me at the high school level just landed a head coaching job at the middle school in his area. He has really made a good effort to get with the local high school program to try and get their playbooks, terminology, and verbiage. So far, they have been so happy about him getting on board as their feeder program that they have helped him in every way possible.
They have included him in every high school practice, meeting and camp that he can attend as well as getting him equipment, and leads on assistant coaches to help him out.
As you can see, building a positive relationship with the high school can be very beneficial.
Good luck coach!

Congrats coach!
I was 24 when I got my varsity DC job too. Best advice I got...
"No matter who you coach with, listen to at clinics, or are around in the coaching world, you can always learn something from anyone"
13 years later, still the truth!

NFL= I watch Zone left, Zone right, Zone fake boot....yaaawwn
College= Always looking to see if the defense is running any of the blitz packages or stunts/slants we run if they are a similar defense.
Also watching the coverage scheme- Can I pre snap read the coverage, do they disguise the coverage then roll into something else?
I also love to watch defenses defend option teams- Does the man responsible for pitch bite on the QB? Does the man responsible for QB ever bite on dive, and so on....

First and foremost it's all the things already said. The honor of making a difference in a kids life, building men, and so on.
From the standpoint of the game, I just love the diversity of offenses ran at this level. In my career I've had the opportunity to coach the Oline in a double wing system as well as spread gun. As a defensive cord., in any given season I'll game plan to defend spread, Wing-t, Flexbone, double wing, and a Fly team. I guess I just love the variety!
Not that the money wouldn't be nice, but the Pro game is just so vanilla to me. Zone left, zone right, boot off of zone.....yaaawwnn

Sounds like we are about the same size as you guys, 30-40 kids each year. We fund raise each off season to pay the participation fee's for all of our kids. The catch is....you quit, you owe the fee! We have the parents write a check at the beginning of the season and if their kids doesn't quit, the check gets returned. It's amazing how much more support you get from the parents concerning "finishing what you start" when the repercussions effect them as well.

We get our youth into the games as well. We also have 4-6 youth "Players of the week" in our programs with a picture and a short bio. We have their coaches pick kids based on preformance, good grades, good sportsmanship, or just being a practice hustler.
Another thing we do is a youth skills day with our coaching staff and a handfull of our players. We keep it fun and give the kids a BBQ at the end. The kids love hanging out with the high school players and we feel it's good for our players to get the chance to give back a little bit too. We also allow the youth coaches to be on the field with us as well.

Way to go coach, good luck!
I am also back after two years off. Got a new job and had to get my feet under me as well as my staff lined out. I just got the green light to coach again and I'm pumped!
After 8 years of dbl wing, the new coaching staff I'm with is running a spread offense, exciting stuff for me!!

Had to take a break after 8 yrs due to job change. I really miss being competative, watching a good game plan come together, working with highschool kids, and the familly atmostsphere of a coaching staff.
I really don't miss, working all weekend (game film, planning, meetings, etc), parents that think they're coaches, feeling like poop all weekend after a tough loss, and missing out on my familly throughout the season.

If football was for entertaining fans, there would be NO double wing teams.

I don't think the system is all to blame, but I do think it's the system transitioning to the next level that comes into play.
It's a fact, players/defenses get bigger, stronger, and much faster at the next level. Colt ran a wide open spread system that made a living on throwing some kind of WR screen every other play. The YAC factor from the recievers catching slants and short digs had to be up there too.
I'm just sayin, in the NFL you can't hang your hat on any one "system" like you can in high school or college. You need to be able to do a bit of everything. WR screens are thrown in every so often but not a staple of any NFL offense. The NFL wants to see QB's that can take a 9 step drop in a dbl TE formation and hit the Z on a deep post after the play-act. Then come back the next play with a 4 wide set and hit the 3 step drop stuff as well.

Highschool senior-
Getting the game winning sack against a QB that went on to be a Gold medel olympian. It was the only time our coach sent me on a blitz all game and it worked......good call coach!

I think DW may actually help your defense. Being a DW team you know that you will only see a small handfull of defenses, 6-2, 6-1, or an odd front. For us this ment more time to spend on defense in practice since our offense somewhat dictates what can be run defensivly against us.
Our defense was 4th in the state so I don't feel DW causes any problems.

Ten yard fight, and NES Play Action football were my favorites before the Maddens. I never had Tecmo bowl. Anybody else remember NES Play Action football? I always played with the Redskins. Man, I would have never remembered that game if you had'nt of brought it up!! I used to use the broncos or redskins. There was a lateral button so you could bring the option to the NFL! Elway pitching to Bobby Humphrey all day!

Although I did play my share of "Ten yard fight", I'm more from the "Tecmo Bowl" generation. Walter Payton, Kevin Mack, Bo Jackson, those guys were unstopable on that game!
