Our injury riddled season finally came to an end but on a good note.....well...except for the kid that ended up going to the ER before the game was over.
Both our QB's were out, one with concussion and the other was walking wounded, dressed down but not expecting to play, at least not the QB position.
So the freshman QB starts and to our surprise, goes off for 2 TDs and 170 yds at half!!! Then in the 1st drive of the second half, gets annihilated on a middle screen (same play that destroyed our starter) and is rolling around like a weeble wobble on his back. Off the the ER he goes....
Believe it or not, this story actually ends on a good note, possibly first of our season. Our walking wounded 2nd stringer says, "put me in coach, I can do this!" (Had his knee drained day before and has a legit separated shoulder). So being that we had literately no one else we said...OK! The kid pulled it together, converted a clutch 4th down and threw the game winning TD that helped us win a game we had no business winning, at least on paper. The team we beat was a playoff team from our league as well.

We just lost another one yesterday.
This time it was a kid that decided to do a back flip off of the stage at lunch....the good new is he only broke his elbow and not his neck.
Trying to stay optimistic.

ACLs, colloarbone, concussions, high ankle sprain, shoulder separated, etc, etc
Yep, we are right there with you!
Started season 2-0 with huge potential, then injuries rained down like crazy all at once. Dropped 3 straight we probably would've won if healthy.
Second year in a row like this. Starting to feel cursed

This is our special teams and conditioning week and as of yesterday it's safe to say, we are not in good cardio shape. Granted, we put them through a vigorous gauntlet of conditioning but even our summer time weight room warriors who were there every day looked like they were going to die. Not to mention all the summer athletes (baseball) looked no different. I guess this is the reason we have a conditioning camp before real practice starts. I was just surprised how many of our best athletes were sucking wind. I was curious, how good of shape your kids are in at this point? Could it be a heat acclimation issue? Not to much, maybe a little. I'm thinking more like the transition from chill'n at the river all day eat'n cheetos to running hills/stairs/agility stations. Some are quickly finding out that even weights everyday won't get your lungs in shape. The good new is, we have almost a full month before our first game so hard work from now till then will pay off.

We are running our youth camp this week and we have close to 50 kids...had 100 last season.
Our staff is having this same conversation.

Just talked to the HC about this yesterday. In our state we're allowed to have doubles every other day. Really makes scheduling a pain in the a$$, tons of phone calls from parents asking what the schedule is daily. We've decided to scrap doubles and just go with one long practice a day. Just seems to be far more pros than cons.

Zero to zero game with a good conference rival through nearly 4 qtrs. They score late in the 4th, get a punt block and are about to score from the 5 again and its 4th down. We call a TO and I give a huddle speach about winning one snap, etc, etc, get the strip, ect......AND WE FRIGGN FORCE A FUMBLE AND RECOVER ON THE 2. Inspired by our defense, we drive 98 yards in 2 minutes, score a TD and decide to go for 2 for the win with the fake extra point we've been practicing for weeks! Now was the time! We fake the kick, flip to our wing around the end for the run/pass option, HE RUNS IN UNTOUCHED............... ........ inverted whistle....no play.....ref says, "I'm so sorry coach, I blew that call", so sorry, my bad....we vomit in our own mouths...reply the extra point...get stuffed...game over we lose 6 to 7 I have no words for that. I might have fought everyone. The thing was, we had by far our favorite officiating crew. Knew them all by name and they always had done a good job. Ran into the white hat at a sports pub a few weeks after, he could hardly look me in the eye. I guessing they felt pretty dumpy about the whole thing......not as dumpy as us....but dumpy.

This is probably not true but it seems like it happens a lot where I thought we had a great week of practice and then we struggled in the game, and vice versa where I though we were walking into an ass kicking and we played really well. Glad Im not the only one that has this baffling experience on a regular basis! Anymore, I almost worry if we dont have a sub-par week. It's a mystery that falls in line with the pyramids, Bermuda triangle and bigfoot.

What it really boils down to is how big your school is. If you have enough kids where your back ups are still pretty good, then you can preach the commitment sermon and stand by it. If your're at a school like I was a few years back, 35 total kids for your Varsity and JV program both, then in my opinion you need to take the route like many said and reward who you have.
We were in a very rural area with kids that lived way out in the sticks, some close to 20 miles way, transportation was a constant issue. Not to mention the poverty level being close to 90%. When you have that kind of social economics to deal with, you're in a whole different world. You'll find yourself punishing kids for the faults and laziness of their deadbeat parents.

Unfortunately thats just the way it goes sometimes. We are heading to team camp short handed because of family reunions, FBLA Nationals, and everything else you could think of.
Drives me bananas! But really, all you can do is coach the kids you have like there the only ones you got! Like we tell our kids, only worry about the things we know we can control.

Coached against my old school for around 15 years with a winning record;)
As of last year, Im now back at my old school and the HC is a guy I played with. I'm also coaching with guys that coached me that were great mentors and great men. I'm truly blessed to be able to be in my position. Everyone made a big deal about me coming back and was very appreciative. My oldest daughter is now a freshman there as well, makes it extra cool.
Craziest part...I'm now coaching kids of guys I played with. Makes me feel old!

Believe it or not...Jim Harbaugh. Was talking about the QB/center exchange. Called his son up to help give a visual and then proceeds to make it out to be some sort of sexual act. He goes on comparing it to jamming 3 fingers in a girls...well you know...nice and detailed. And the beauty of it was the lighting that cast a shadow on the back wall that was like the scene from Austin Powers.
Never in a million years expected to see people bailing out at the speed I witnessed.

To me 7 on 7 outside of our offense vs. our defense is not about teaching. Sure we throw our stuff and I will never understand why people would have installs just to win passing leagues, but the value in it is not in scheme. To me it is all about the competition aspect. The kids like it. It's fun for them. They get t basically play super organized back yard football against other teams in our state. It's a huge confidence boost when you compete with a team you might not have any business competing with. I like it for that reason alone. We'll see how much our kids like it going in this year as a 46 cover 1 team that always sends 5. Teams will be looking at us like we're crazy for playing a man short! Haha! Should be interesting! Maybe just you could just not read the posts about RPOs and facemelters, just keep on scrolling down the page until you see something that suits your fancy?
Really no need to give yourself carpeltunel from writing a "rant" that tells everyone what they should or shouldn't be interested in.
If I don't want to read about rip/liz banjo busters I keep scrolling till I find a post Im interested in.

So what about dropping plays that over a 3-4 year period just don't seem to work? Let's say you have investigated and researched why, and have come to the conclusion it worked when Superman carried the ball behind the Incredible Hulk, but doesn't work as well or consistently anymore? What if said play(s) were considered to be "sacred cows" by many but the stats just don't add up? Would like to see a thread on this topic all by itself. I can think of a few runs and passes we've dump over time. Sent from my SCH-R970 using proboards

He kept saying, this is how the DC would do it...but I do this way and would call it this And how many times did he reference a technique then say, "our kid didn't actually do that technique, but we get freek athletes at Florida st so"
And when all else failed, tell a story and drop an F bomb or two.

Stanford oline coach was great! Also liked the guy that talked about shedding blocks. Was very disappointed in Florida st DB guy Friday night, worst presentation I've been a part of. Room started out packed but must have been close to 30 people that walked out when all was said and done! Unbelievable

I'll be there. Was looking forward listening to Dunlap talk 3-3 but now that were going to a 46 I'm thinking the Florida St. secondary coach may be my main focus. Only problem is he's speaking about DB drills and Off man/Man press during the late sessions on Friday, 9 to 9:50...that's brutal after a 7 hour drive.

We may be getting rid of our defensive coordinator (me), if switching from the 33 to a 46 doesn't pan out - Long verbiage - Tough guy stuff - Tackling to the ground - 3 to 4 hour coaches meetings on Sundays, we get in and get out! Still waiting to cut out static stretching that follows our dynamic but we have one old school guy on staff that swears by it when done after dynamic.

It really does go by so fast! My first year coaching my oldest daughter was a bun in the oven and now she's an incoming freshman at the school I coach at and played at many years ago. Not to mention....dating one of my football players....I figured this day would eventually come......he's a good kid but it's still weird and makes me feel old!
Luckily, my wife and kids love being a part of my coaching life. I took two years off when I got a different job and they were as miserable as me. I guess what I'm getting at is you don't always have to step away if you can involve them in your love and passion. My wife and kids like to hang out at the games with the other coaches families as well a getting involved with helping concessions or making grub for the coaches after the games.
I know not everyone has a bought in family to their programs and understand how though that can be. I definitely count my blessings everyday.

Left the place I coached at for 15 years to go to my alma mater. Perfect situation so far- Head coach is a friend of mine that I played with, 2 of my assistant coaches on defense are actually guys that coached me when I was there many moons ago......aaaannd my daughter (who is a very pretty girl) is going to be a freshman this year so I'll have many people in the building keeping an eye on her.

I've been learning from this site for close to a decade. Going on my 15th year as a Dcord and Oline coach.
Started in a Double Wing system. ..thus my profile name, thought it was the best offense ever created with no equal. Now im many years removed and doing the spread gig ...and still wondering how to change my profile name :-(
Just took a Dcord/oline job at the high school I went to. Very blessed to be a part of these good ol game of pigskin!
This site has been more helpful than all the clinics I've ever been to without a doubt!

We are a school of about 400ish. Our community is very small and the social economics are very "interesting" to say the least. We have a lumber mill that is the main source of employment other than that it's the local grocery stores or little tourist shops.......or one of the many many medical marijuana grows. The next town is about 40 miles away and many folks commute there for work.
That being said, there is not much of a football culture in the town. Example- we have had the best run of wins over the last 10 years in the history of the school, we have a beautiful field with a new all weather track, yet we have very low turnouts at our home games.
Don't get me wrong, some years are better than others and not all the people are bad people but it can definitely be a little disappointing at times. Lets just say with some of the parents we deal with, it is very clear that our kids need us more than we need them as football players.
