This is our special teams and conditioning week and as of yesterday it's safe to say, we are not in good cardio shape.
Granted, we put them through a vigorous gauntlet of conditioning but even our summer time weight room warriors who were there every day looked like they were going to die. Not to mention all the summer athletes (baseball) looked no different.
I guess this is the reason we have a conditioning camp before real practice starts. I was just surprised how many of our best athletes were sucking wind.
I was curious, how good of shape your kids are in at this point?

Depends on the kid. Our kids who showed up all summer and bust their butts when we ran are ready to go. Our kids who showed up 1/2 the time. Or just kinda jog during condition couldn't make it through a game right now

We're decent. Like most, the ones that worked hard during the summer are okay. That's what fall camp/preseason is for. You can't really mimick it until you get the pads on and go at it.

Agree you can run all you want. But you can't simulate the pounding of the game. At some point you got to play your way into shape.

Our guys are in good enough shape. Would I like them to be in better shape? Of course. But, we do enough running and conditioning every day that they're in fine game shape.

We push conditioning very hard. The way I see it, there's not alot you can control but you can control how good of shape you are in. It gives our players a mental advantage knowing they are in better shape than the opponent.

Had 3 pukers tonight, so I'd say we are in terrible shape.

Everyone who was here some in the summer have been fine. The only issue we've had are some guys not properly hydrating. We were better with that today.
True cardio is overrated unless they are two way guys anyways.
Of course, the next two days should hit 90 so we'll see.

Had 3 pukers tonight, so I'd say we are in terrible shape. Just getting the bad stuff out coach. I did have 2 fat big skills go do that while just working footwork on my line grid. They got some water after & got back in. 1 guy was fine, but the other needed to be told to spend big parts of the day in the shade. Both were better today...

We condition a lot...but take heart rates and time out the approximate break between plays. We also do this in our pursuit drills. Being able to recover the right way and quickly. We could play a game right now and we've had 2 practices.

Not to much, maybe a little. I'm thinking more like the transition from chill'n at the river all day eat'n cheetos to running hills/stairs/agility stations. Some are quickly finding out that even weights everyday won't get your lungs in shape. The good new is, we have almost a full month before our first game so hard work from now till then will pay off.

Our kids that were doing lousy the first day were almost universally suffering from hydration issues. I ripped them about it, sent out a reminder message at 7:30 the next morning, great practice the next day.
We aren't game ready, but we don't have to be.

We were in good shape before our dead period but that just killed our progress.

This is by far the best conditioned group I've seen since I started coaching and I think a lot has to do with their buy-in to hydration.
