Pvogel, for what it's worth - I hate it when coaches put it up to the team to excuse a kid that has broken a rule. 99% of the time the players will vote for the kid to play. In my career, I've known several coaches have done this - and when the kid is voted onto play they rationalize it by saying the team wanted it. I think that's an excuse. As a coach, it's your job, perhaps with the input of your staff to set the rules. If you're not going to enforce the rule , don't have it. Or if you are going to let the team decide to enforce let them vote on every rule infraction.

Air Force community. Definitely are out there. One time band played the anthem before they were supposed to and we weren't out there. Heard about it big time.

Have fun and watch the game. If it is something you think you might want to study later - record it.

We played the same team weeks 9 and 10 three years in a row and the next year in weeks 9 and 11. One year we made major changes as the opponent had won and rushed for way too many yards. One year we saved our version for the swinging gate until the second game. But since we played each other so late in the year there usually wasn't too much change. By that time in the season we had scouted each other a bunch.

At the coaches meeting after a game. "he's gotta be a football player and make that play". Usually said after a player screws up on a situation we haven't prepared him for. Also, same scenario - "Be an athlete!"

Happened to a lot of us . Easy answer is to not read the post, but that's easier said than done. Can be difficult to not take it out on the kid for the parents comments. But that's not usually fair to the kid. Have you thought about meeting with the parents that are doing this and explain if they complain via social media it makes the athletes think it's ok to bash the coaches? Social media can be such a negative thing.

We have done a Jersey auction homecoming week on the night of the powderpuff game. All the players bring their away jerseys and we auction them off between quarters. The high bid for each jersey gets to wear the jersey the rest of the week to school or work, parade, game etc. They then have to bring back the jerseys by the next Monday . Easy $$$ - its great when the kid's girlfriend gets into a bidding war with mom! No purchases, no inventory, no preparation - just cash money...

In Missouri we start official practice on July 31 this year. We have our jamboree and first two games in August. To me, it seems like a lot of football in the dog days of summer. When does your state start official practice?

As a head coach our pregame got shorter. Last year we'd arrive at 6:15 - get dressed and on the field at 6:30. Short o and d Indy and then short team o. Line up for the national anthem and ready to go

Smallest class in our state. We've had some success so we have OK numbers but a number of teams in our conference have less than 20 on their rosters. From what was one of the best small school conferences in the state we have dipped significantly.

coachbud and nighthawk - if you live in a rural community a local farmer may give you innertubes for free. Ours worked fine last year.

Beat a county rival 52-50 - over 1,000 yards offense, both teams returned kick offs for tds. We blocked a short field goal at the end of the game. First time we had the school had beat that rival in a decade.

advantages of moving to assistant after being a long time head coach. Don't have to worry about insurance, physicals, AD, Supt., principal, boosters, parents pretty much, practice scheduling, contest scheduling, media. Since I'm not teaching I don't have to worry about getting along with the teaching staff. Not in charge of all the off-season stuff. Add that all up and its a bunch!
Lots of things I miss about being a head coach but am adjusting to that. We'll see how the gig goes once the lights come on Friday nights...

There is life after head coaching football. Will be an assistant coach next year (not teaching). Looking forward to it. Ask a coaching friend how he liked doing basically the same thing last year - "I like being one of the guys instead of being the guy" I think I understand what he means.

I thought it worked great and yes it was effective as any dummy tackling. d-line coach used it quite a bit on pass rush drills and stopping an escaping QB. I think the fact that it did roll and bounced made it more effective.
as to where we got it = farmer donated it. total cost $0.

We always have shoulder pads and helmets on Thursdays. One time we were running o vs air and the two pulling guards ran into each other. One broke his nose and was gushing blood. Since then, we never go without helmets.

The players were a couple of months away from it being a felony! If you had a 14 year old freshman daughter and two senior boys have sex with her, consensual or not, you might not have the same sympathy. It was against the law!
No unwilling party - with that rationale it would be OK if the players sold drugs and/or paid engaged in prostitution.
I guess I as a coach I don't want to judge which laws are OK and which are not.

Ive said on this thread before that I wouldn't play them and am surprised at the number of coaches that don't say that. If you're rationalizing that you play them because the age difference wasn't bad enough in your eyes then aren't you setting yourself up as judge in every instance? They were arrested and they admitted to breaking the law.
If you want to rationalize you could get to the point - "he may have hit her a little but nothing too serious" or "he stole stuff from the gas station but hasn't everybody done that" or "it wasn't really sexual assault because the girl asked for it"
I think some of the coaches are trying to excuse their behavior and that can lead to a slippery slope.
They got arrested - and admitted to breaking the law. They don't play.
I also wonder how many of the coaches who say its OK for the kids to play have daughters and would this change their outlook...

Agreed. And if was taken to court I don't know how it would turn out. But in Missouri a kid is out until the trial and subsequent punishment is done. Regarding the situation given, the two players were arrested of a crime and admitted they did it. I can't see allowing them to play
