Retired Friday as a head coach. 39 years of coaching with 29 as head coach. I already miss not having a team. Don't want the job back but I do miss it. Have some kids interested in going into teaching/coaching. I tell them not to do it unless they really love it.

Congrats, coach. I retired from teaching after the '13 school year with 39 years but still coach. I've been an assistant coach at only 3 schools. I love it. I go back to school and sub on days I don't have anything else to do.

Retired from high school head coaching in 2013. Coaching runningbacks at a JC now and loving it!

The best part of this retirement is going to a faculty meeting and realizing I don't have to do any of this stuff for NEE, BYOC, PDP, SIS, etc. etc. etc.!!!! Everybody was assigned to work on their curriculum that is due at the end of the year. I did a highlight video on HUDL -- much more fun!

Next year's head coach had his football meeting with the kids today. I really feel like I'm going to die...

I retired from teaching last spring after 34 years. Still coaching this fall. Not sure after that. I absolutely love coaching but am finding that seeing the kids each day was unbelievably effective for keeping off season workouts happening. Not feeling that they are doing much now. I go in on Mondays and run the weights after school. Don't live nearby any more 1/2 hour + away. Might hook up with a small local school eventually and hopefully have some influence. Might like the small school feel. ? I relate to what you are feeling, though.

There is life after head coaching football. Will be an assistant coach next year (not teaching). Looking forward to it. Ask a coaching friend how he liked doing basically the same thing last year - "I like being one of the guys instead of being the guy" I think I understand what he means.

The past couple of years we had a guy on staff who was a former head coach, in fact he was the HC's coach (35+ years ago). He was awesome. He was a terrific position coach, got his kids to play hard, dealt with their 'issues', and had some terrific insight to share on various coaching things.
He stepped away at the end of the season for some health issues and we're going to really miss him.

Retired last year after 38 years of teaching and 39 of coaching. Stepped back from being "the guy" to one of the guys. Coached frosh with a young guy who was doing his first HC gig. Biggest frustration was watching him make practice mistakes that would translate into losses later. If you get back into coaching, my advice is to make sure that your role is CLEARLY defined. I thought I was going to be the mentor, quality control guy and it turned into something else. Now we have cleared the air and I'm looking forward to year 40.

advantages of moving to assistant after being a long time head coach. Don't have to worry about insurance, physicals, AD, Supt., principal, boosters, parents pretty much, practice scheduling, contest scheduling, media. Since I'm not teaching I don't have to worry about getting along with the teaching staff. Not in charge of all the off-season stuff. Add that all up and its a bunch!
Lots of things I miss about being a head coach but am adjusting to that. We'll see how the gig goes once the lights come on Friday nights...

In 2015 I agreed to help a former player of mine who was a HC because he needed it. He enticed me by saying I would just coach QBs, not have to come on Thursdays or Sundays. Pay would be as good as my last head job with much less time.
During the Summer he added RBs to my job description. Then LBers.
Once we started practice he would ask me daily to put in "my" Punt, Punt Return, etc. so I realized I was becoming ST coordinator too.
On Tuesday of second week he decided he wasn't happy with his new DC or Defense, wanted to go back to previuous Defense (one he had played under me). Naturally when he told the DC the guy quit.
So guess who was now DC?
There went having Thursdays and Sundays off, and worse yet, was going to have to spend weekends watching-breaking down film, one of main reasons I quit as a HC.
After five games he "resigned" over a parent issue. The AD, former assistant of mine, practically begged me to be Interim. My former player urged me to do it for sake of the kids. Against my better judgment I did.
So in a few short months I had gone from fully retired to QBs coach to head coach again.
I felt like Michael Corleone - "Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in again."
Rarely have I been so glad to see a Football season end.
This Fall I'm going to test Bear Bryant's admonishment that "If you can live without coaching, do so" for sure.

If any of the retired coaches would like to see another part of the world (Europe) while coaching football out of a scholastic seting, send me a PM with your email address.

I just realized I made a translation error: The gig I'm talking about is NOT in an a scholastic setting. No more thread hijacking for me, sorry fellas!
