I know the "traditional" Thursday practice is a walk-and-talk practice in just helmets. Defense works on alignments, maybe runs a few plays against the scout team (without pads). Offense runs plays on air. How many of you do something different for Thursday practices? To me it seems like you could still accomplish much more with that day (it almost feels like a useless day) while also not risking injury the day before the game. Maybe at least have the scout teams with bags/hand-shields? Am I wrong in my thinking?

We always have shoulder pads and helmets on Thursdays. One time we were running o vs air and the two pulling guards ran into each other. One broke his nose and was gushing blood. Since then, we never go without helmets.

We work stuff v. scout team with pads and work special teams for about an hour.
Always hit punt & PR during the week and the rest on Thursdays.

Offense run through play that will be run I various field positions (on air). Defense align and makes calls vs top formations, review end of half/ game stuff. Each special team is called out; each special team player must call his backup. At end of practice awards given for previous game.

I was sick of just talking to the defense this year during our walk-thru so I decided we would go 10 plays vs scout O with OL holding bags. Worked great felt the players were more into it than just talking and lining up.

We stretch, do all of our kicking game until it's right
Then we do 10 offense plays with the 1's, 5 with the 2's, work our inside the 5 stuff
Then we do defense vs the scout book, each play once (probably 8 plays) with the 1's 8 plays with the 2's
Then we do our pursuit drill before we do our team sprints (hype, school pride thing).

We do a condensed version of pre-game warmups, to make the pre-game routine more comfortable. Then, the team goes to the sideline, and we run a scripted "game," 25 different scenarios: KR, offense against scout for 5 plays, punt, defense vs scout, off, PAT, 2-pnt, onside kick, punt block, 2-mon O/D...we make a game-like scenario, we substitute players on the fly. We run all special team plays on air, and the scout teams are just the plays we've been running all week.

We always wear full pads (Tuesdays-Wednesdays) or helmets and shoulder pads (Mondays and Thursdays). Seen too many guys injure a shoulder in helmets only.
The only thing we "walked through" was Pass Pro-Draw-Screen assignments during Pre-Pre Game Specialties Thursday.
Everything else was full speed although it was not full contact. Mondays and Thursdays Defensive interior used hand shields. With new rules limiting "collision" practices perimeter players played two-hand tag.
Our Thursday practice was:
15 minutes Pre-Pre Game Specialties
20 minutes Pre-Game Routine
25 minutes Team Defense including Kicking Game
5 minutes Halftime (Water Break, Sky Drill)
40 minutes Team Offense including Kicking Game

Maybe at least have the scout teams with bags/hand-shields? Am I wrong in my thinking? Not wrong at all. We went away from it for that exact reason. We already have a "walk-through" practice, that's Monday when we install. Why the day before a game would we want to "walk-through?" We should be ready by then. So, this year, Wednesdays were half rack, big Indy/high rep days. Thursdays were full gear. Hit STs briefly, mostly subbing on the fly, worked Team O/D vs. scout for about 15 minutes each (thud period), then had a live team period where we went through a 10 minutes scrimmage up and down the field working all phases and end of half/game clock situations. Started w/ a KO and did everything that we would normally do in a game (punts on 4th, FG/XP tries, timeouts, etc). Like anything I can't prove to you that it helped us or not, but we liked it and the kids liked it. Never had an injury the day before the game or anything like that, but I've never bought that excuse for not hitting the day before. Kid can just as easily get hurt Wednesday which would 98% of the time put him out or hobbled for Friday.

I like simulating a game. Kick off to start. Defense 3 plays. Punt return. Offense drive PAT. Defense 3 plays. Punt return the other way. Etc.... Work in your special situations. Finish with 2 min O and D and victory.

specials offense vs cones defense alignment and stunt walk through sometimes some pass skelly or option work run fits- if we are facing double wing we might do some individual time, depends what happened during the week
that's it for us.

We aren't in pads on Thursdays. We really want to keep the kids fresh before game night, but we really get after it on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. We don't do any indy, just team O/D and all special teams units get reps in. Our goal is to simply get in and get out. It is supposed to be a little more loose and relaxed than the other practices, so we play music (also good for simulating crowd noise), practice on the game field (kids love it, don't know why), and have dinner at the house of one of the senior captains afterwards. One of our team traditions we have is that we give whoever forces a turnover in practice a gatorade on Thursdays, which in turn has got more players going all-out on scout team. Long story short, our thursdays are light and enthusiastic.

It's simply a shorter practice for us and we work all special teams. We never tackle to the ground and we do run all our packages etc but it's scripted just like a normal practice. Monday is our walk through day. Our offense uses Monday mainly as a correction day while our defens installs needed adjustments and we lift. Thursday's last an hour. We normally practice for two hours. Our kids don't view Thursday's much different and we don't make a big deal about them being different. It's a work day just shorter. We wear helmet, shoulder pads girdle shorts just like any other day.
