If you convert your original data list to a table, you can then add data with no issues. You can then refresh the pivot table you created. I think that should solve your issue.

To start, I suggest learning how to use: PIVOT TABLES (to get count based on different criteria), IF, IF AND, IF OR (to use existing data to get more data, ADVANCED FILTERING (to filter data based on multiple criteria-can also use AUTO FILTER).
If you have further questions, I am willing to share what I know.

"Excel blows the doors off both of them though. So much more you can do and nowhere near as jumbled up and hard to understand as New Hudl." Agree with this BUT, you can't watch film on EXCEL. I like to filter by formation and then watch all the plays run out out of a formation. I'm a big EXCEL proponent. I've been using EXCEL for quite a long time; I feel that it's easier to manipulate data. As I've mention on this board numerous times, I also feel that I don't have to type in as much data. I can, for the most part, create formulas that will give me more info from what I've typed into Hudl.

PM me.
First you have to decide what you want EXCEL to do. I wanted it to take the data I typed into HUDL and give me more info (without typing data into a zillion columns). I guess one of the first things I had to learn was how to create IF statements to show something based on whether or not it matched a criterion. Next was how to create IF statements that included AND or OR, to get things that matched more than one criterion. The big one was learning to create and use PIVOT TABLES; that was a giant leap for me. Pivot tables make getting counts so much easier (formations, as well as runs and passes from each formation). Recently I've learned how to use ADVANCED FILTERS (filtering by multiple criteria-better than auto filter-not so many keystrokes).
I am very proud to say that I taught myself what I wanted to know. I simply sat down and Googled what I wanted to learn. I would view a ton of suggested sites and take notes. I would also play with the info I found, until it worked or I got what I wanted. That's it. There was no secret sauce or any outside help.
I hope this helps. Feel free to contact me if I can help. By the way, I'm not a math guy. I'm a retired English teacher; if that means anything.

Also, EXCEL allows you to type in less data and get more data in return (i.e. field/boundary,) without typing this into HUDL column(to do this you have to know how to use some formulas). If you want to learn how to use EXCEL , learn how to use pivot tables and filtering and how to create formulas to enter data.

I'm like you, Planck. Once a film is tagged, I export it to Excel and go from there. I do this for two reasons: #1-Excel can do some of the heavy lifting (tagging). I don't have to enter everything; Excel formulas can take care of some things. #2-I've been using Excel as a scouting tool for years and find it easier to manipulate data with Excel.
As a former English teacher who has trouble counting, I agree with the following. "Their tools are just bad. It's an online viewing platform, that's it."

I'm a big fan of OLD HUDL. Our young guys like the new HUDL. IMHO, there's too much going on when using new HUDL. I feel as if I'm in a car doing 150 MPH driving down an expressway. " There was a time when Hudl was super user friendly and coach friendly. They have gone very cold here lately almost to the point of being robotic." I agree....

"I think this is one of the benefits of teaching each player an offensive and defensive position- and having each coach coach an offensive and defensive position."
"Those guys are ignored by everyone and blamed for everything. Those are my people and they are a hill I will die on." I totally agree. I am a DB coach and WR coach. During defense I work with and focus on the varsity DB's; During offense I work with and focus on the young WR's. Anyone, from the top DB to the last WR, with whom I work is one of "my guys". I take responsibility for their knowing what to do, how to do it, and their effort. I also help run the scout team, so they are also under the "my guys" group. I guess the only players who are not part of "my guys" are offensive linemen (since I don't have much contact with them).

Best piece of advice came from my dad. My first year of coaching I was talking to him (actually babbling) about the players we had. He let me go on and on; then he said, "I don't care how much hair they have on their face, chest or a--. They're 16-18 year-old kids. The moment you forget that they are kids; they will do something very stupid to remind you." There have been MANY times during my coaching career that I have repeated that to myself. Definitely one of the best pieces of advice I received.

"I've heard on here and around my circles that when you take over you have to figure the senior class quickly. Those are the dudes that are either looking for a change on their last go 'round and are ready to run with it, or they are the boat anchor you have to cut loose as quick as possible." I totally agree!!!
At my one HC job, the seniors were the anchor I should have cut lose early. I tried to work with them, but it was pushing wet spaghetti up a hill....

My two cents is to make your notes, power point, etc. available. I learned the hard way not to pass out handouts (it's a pain to lug them around and it seemed I never had enough). I would put my email address on the overhead and tell anyone who wants my notes, power point, etc. to email me. Sometimes I got tons of requests, and sometimes I got a few; but my stuff was there for the asking.

At our pre-game meal, players receive portioned-out chicken and rice or pasta. They can get all the salad, fruit, Gatorade that they want. We've never had an issue with players eating too much ( Last Supper Syndrome).

Here is some food for thought. Total Coaching Experience (Dates, places, other sports coached and position - head coach or assistant)
Coaching Responsibilities (Present and previous responsibilities - i.e. WR coach, DB coach, Special Teams Coordinator)
Administrative Responsibilities - do any of the following apply? 1. Complete administrative paperwork such as eligibility forms, team roster, locker lists, medical forms, insurance forms, permission forms 2. Correspond with parents, teachers, administrators, college coaches and other high school coaches 3. Assist head coach with checking players’ grades 4. Assist head coach with recruiting correspondence 5. Assist head coach in ordering, inventory, storing and dispersing new equipment 6. Attend league meetings and all-star meetings with head coach 7. Oversee practice when head coach is late or unable to attend 8. Deal with any football-related issues when head coach is unavailable 9. Assume the duties of the head coach if he is unavailable
Professional Organizations (i.e. AFCA, state and/or county coaches associations)
Coaching Achievements (honors/awards YOU have won, i.e. All-star games you were selected to coach, clinics you were selected to speak)
Philosophy I. ACADEMICS II. MORALITY / RESPONSIBILITY III. SPORTSMANSHIP IV. SUB-VARSITY PROGRAMS Hopes this helps.....

I do it exactly as you describe. The total distance of punt, minus the yards returned. What good does it do to have a 50-yard punt and the opponent gets a 40-yard return? BUT, I do keep track of the punt distance(before return). Same thing for kick-off. Distance of kick, minus yards returned. I record the original kick distance, did kick go into end zone, start spot for opponent offense.

We are a regional school district and have sending districts. This situation means that we can not have incoming frosh workout with us until they graduate from 8th grade. We started running weight training clinics in the winter. These clinics are held in the high school on Saturday's, open to any 6th-8th grader, and are sponsored by the local recreation association.
Once school is officially finished and we are into summer workouts, we encourage the incoming frosh to attend so they can learn the proper way to lift and the basics of our offensive and defensive systems.

Our players eat together in cafeteria and get a pre-game meal every week (paid for by booster club). For a 7 PM home game, serving starts at 3:25. For a 6 PM away game, we might start serving at 2:30/2:45 (depending on travel distance). We will have our offensive, defensive, and special teams meeting immediately following pre-game meal (if home or relatively short road trip). Meal includes: chicken breast, pasta or rice, salad, fruit, rolls, and Gatorade.
Players are asked, before first game, whether they want rice or pasta; once they decide, they can't change. Kids with food allergies/issues are handled appropriately. Parents set-up and clean-up everything.
On some long road trips, the boosters will buy pizza or hoagies and something to drink for the ride home.

"... visit colleges that Don't have the resources that others do, and what they do to adapt ." Totally agree. We spend a lot of time visiting DIII schools because they are similar to us in that they play with Ralphs, not the Thor's one sees on TV. Two pieces of advice on college visits: 1) If your staff visits a college make sure you know someone on the staff or have a former player playing there. If not, you might simply get put into a room width some video to watch and no one to answer questions. This is what happened to me early in my career before I figured it out. 2) Make sure you have some specific questions or areas you want covered. Don't go in cold and expect to learn everything about the XXX Defense, or you'll come away with very little.

IMHO, save your money and join Football Coaches Professional Growth Assoc. I think it costs $200.00, but you get access to an amazing number of videos that you can copy. I was a member years ago (late 90's) when we could not attend clinics. It was well worth the $100.00 it cost then.

We previously used old game jerseys (old and beat-up) on the scout teams. We would give kids a "scout jersey" and they were expected to keep it all week and wear it every day. At end of week we collected jerseys and washed them. As you guessed, it didn't happen. Kids lost jerseys, left them at home, or couldn't find them in the hazardous waste site they call a locker. Went with the colored helmet caps and things went a whole lot better. We hand out caps during pre-practice and collect them at the end of practice. Kids stick the caps in their belt and put them on when needed. No muss, no fuss.
Don't know why it took us so long to figure this out!!!!

We are required to submit a supervision list to our AD. This list states who is supervising where and when. At end of practice, we have one coach bolt to the locker room as soon as HC dismisses team. This coach stands/sits close to the players' dressing area and keeps law and order in that area. On game nights, the two frosh coaches head to the locker room as soon as the clock hits 00:00. We are also required to supervise the players who are outside the building and waiting for a ride home.

My son didn't play tackle football until he was a freshman in high school. When he was younger, he was a big kid and would have played with kids two years older. No way was I going to go for that. My grandson (my son's son) started playing tackle football at age 7, BUT my son (who is a high school football coach) is one of the coaches along with another of the assistants from his school.

We focus on top 5 formations and plays. On Monday we align the scout team in each of the top 5 formations and walk through the favorite plays. We will also go over any special adjustments/personnel keys. We also make a 20-25 play cut-up of the same top formations and plays and send via HUDL. We will watch that cut-up before practice on Tuesday or Wednesday. Used to hand out scouting reports, but got tired of seeing them on the floor....
