Mine for example was when I was in my second year as a coach, assisting the man who became my HS coach when I was a senior.
He told me "If you want to be a head coach, you better know defense."

Don't put on a clinic on the field. Coach them on the run and fix it in film is probably the best advice I ever got.
I like this too:

I like this too: Unironically Michael's advice to Dwight is probably the best advice I ever received. "Stop sucking"- that's what the coach I played for and later coached under told me when I asked him for advice upon taking over a bad program. Don't do the obviously dumb and detrimental things that sucky teams do. Have a solid plan on O/D/ST + in the weight room. Maintain a disciplined and structured program. Be a good role model, etc. Just don't suck Or as Michael put it "don't be an idiot"

I played in the late 1960's into the mid 70's and started coaching in the 70's. At that time a lot of practice time was spent on drills that were ball-busting for the sake of ball-busting or "made them tough". The advice that changed my thinking was:
Never do a drill that doesn't directly relate to what they'll have to do in a game.

When things go well spread the love, when things go bad take the heat.
As a head coach this was a lesson that I thought was under utilized. Too many times a coach will say something about how his team didn't perform well in a losing effort and while it may be true, kids think they put out great effort and if you throw them under the bus they are not going to want to get better.

Knowing what to do and what not to do is the (semi) easy part...Sticking to that, and doing that over and over and over, consistently, 365 days a year, is the tough part...

If you are going to be bad, play a lot of kids.
The idea being that if you are losing, parents won’t be as tough because their kids are at least playing. And a lot less grousing on the sideline.

Best piece of advice came from my dad. My first year of coaching I was talking to him (actually babbling) about the players we had. He let me go on and on; then he said, "I don't care how much hair they have on their face, chest or a--. They're 16-18 year-old kids. The moment you forget that they are kids; they will do something very stupid to remind you." There have been MANY times during my coaching career that I have repeated that to myself. Definitely one of the best pieces of advice I received.

The players will not remember what you said.
They will remember how you make them feel.

To try coaching football. A few coaches on Delphi's single wing, etc. forum suggested it, and (after a year in which I had a heart attack) I eventually took it up as almost a dare. I'm so glad I did, and I've never been able to put it down for long since. I thought I might try coaching adult women, but instead I've been coaching children. It feels good just being around kids having fun.

I was told this as a young coach and hear it in my head every time a parent/fan says if I were you I would run the ball more Pass the ball more/ Punt on 1st down, etc...

About 30 years ago an old coach (probably about my age now) told me "you've gotta have a few of them beer drinking D students to win a state championship".
He was right.

Think of players not plays... It doesn't have to be good against everything to be the right call in that moment!... If you make them pick between playing your sport or another sport... you are probably gonna lose Don't forget to have fun!!!
I know thats 4 lol but those have in a way become my coaching philosophy!

don't ask them to do what they're not capable of.
if you are, then you need to change. not them.

Not really advice I received, just something I've grown to believe over the years.....Scheme and play design is fun and entertaining, but isn't in the Top 10 reasons why teams are successful or not. Spend more time on relationships and culture, less on X's and O's

Its supposed to be fun (something ive lost track of the past few seasons)
For the most part the kids will never care as much as you do (got to keep that in perspective)

"Today is going to be a great day. You know why? Because I am going to make it a great day." - Coach Randy Ragsdale. Long time friend and rival and mentor.
"You don't have to make the perfect call. Just avoid the ball call." - Coach Tubby Raymond
"Have a tool for each situation, but don't make the toolbox so heavy you can't carry it." - someone on CoachHuey - someone please take credit or credit whoever said this
