I am filling out the formation part in Hudl. 1) I want to. 2) I believe you have to in order to us assist. Some are obviously pretty easy, however there are some that I really struggle to name. Would anyone that has this completed be willing to share? If not, how do you go about naming formations? Thanks in advance!

You do not have to name formations or backfields to have assist fill in the columns.
If you leave formations blank, they just do not fill in any formations for you.
I also believe you do not have to name every formation. The ones you do not fill in will just not be named if they ever show up on film.

I don't bother. There are too many variables for us that it isn't worth it.
I've never seen what oldman61 said (not filling them in... I would actually prefer that)... maybe that's because we have a few formations names from years ago. Assist puts in very generic names (I think our 1 back is "Ace" so 2TE Double Wing and 2 x 2 gun is "Ace")... I just delete all their formations and put them in myself.
At one point we had something like 237 offensive formations on Hudl (231 unnamed). It is a lot easier for me to take care of it week by week.

senatorblutarsky: Are you saying that you can change the HUDL Assist formations each week? I must live in a very deep hole because I didn't know that. How is that done?

So if I don't put in the names of the formations, they will? I've never used Assist before.

So if I don't put in the names of the formations, they will? I've never used Assist before. I don't know about that... we have some named that are pretty generic, so we get those. I do recall some unknowns being left blank.
We used it when it first came out- didn't like it (inaccurate). It is much better now, but I never really cleaned up our previously used formation names.
If you put things in as you want them, they will use your terms. Like I said, for us, it is just easier to do that myself... one formation on paper will look like another, but if they use guys differently, etc. it will be different.
Example- say a Team A runs under C, TE to one side, SE/Slot to the other with an H back. Team B runs the same look, but instead of an H-Back, it is a true FB in an offset I. Hudl Assist may very label those the same- I want them different because Team A runs more spread concepts and B runs I concepts.
If that isn't an issue with you naming them is probably the way to go.
We used to do it ourselves (I had an off-site assistant coach who was basically a troubleshooter at work... he did all of that because it "kept him awake"... but he is no longer in the area), but now that we are using it again it is helpful for ODK, D & D, yard line, hash, result, etc... I would just rather they leave the formations to us (that is strictly personal preference).

You can edit/override formation diagrams any time. Doing this weekly would seem tedious and time consuming to me... but you could do it.
I just let Assist do their thing, then I edit it in the column.

So if I don't put in the names of the formations, they will? I've never used Assist before. Our offense calls the formation one word to the right and other to the left. Our defense calls them by the set. Example offense might call it Ram/Lion Defense calls that’s 3x1 Assist doesn’t break it up Ram and lion, just would call it 3x1 and then strength to the right or left. Our offensive coaches were frustrated bc assist was overwriting that formation name after they went it and added their play calls from a Friday game. Called hudl, they said if u don’t name any formations or backfield sets and then it won’t get filled in, or overwrite anything So when u go to Team setting under the team tab, and then click formation names, ours are all blank. Obviously, hudl doesn’t fill those in for us with assist then, so we as a staff have to.

Im a defensive guy but our offense gets to name all the formations and we go by theres. So i just create my own formation column, then once Hudl assist names them using the wacky offenses names i rename them in my column
