What do some of you do to determine what number a player gets as far as his jersey number goes? After my one-on-one end of the year player meetings, some kids obviously would like the same jersey number next year. What criteria do some of you use to determine who gets to pick their jersey number first? Thank you in advance for any of your answers. I appreciate it.

Selection based on off season points total. I ask the kids what number they want to be when second semester starts. If 2 kids want the same number. The guy with the most off season points gets it.

Currently the boss does this 1-Returning starters 2-key backups 3-ROYs factored by offseason commitments, so the graduations between each level has a price.
When I was in charge of freshmen/JVs, I just gave out whatever number I wanted you to have...... Here ya' go, might that number great.

What is the criteria for your “off-season points”? What categories do the players get points for? Thank you.

This is what we did, except I just lined the kids up according to points with highest first and they got what they wanted. Class, age, didn't give a {censored}. Want a certain number? Work for it.

WIAA3-several things you could do to earn points. You can earn points in wt room for max outs, runs etc... You can earn points for grades. Community Service, fundraisers, things like that. You can also lose points for poor grades, poor behavior in school etc..

There’s a school up our way that has the same uniforms, freshmen through senior. Most kids get a number as a freshman and keep that number as long as they go through the program. I do think they allow returning players to change their number if a number becomes available through graduation.
This is a small rural school that usually has around 40-50 kids total in the program. Obviously, this would be much harder to do at a big school

Returning Players get their number if they want it, from there it’s done by returning varsity based on workout attendance. For example the returning varsity player with the most days goes first if they want a new number (regardless of class) then it goes down the list of returners with varsity time. After that it’s new varsity players with most days, working down to least.

As a guy who changed numbers 5 times in 9 years, I never really understood the big deal about getting a certain number.

On a side note, I am phasing out 40s and 80s. No one wants them.

When I was in HS back before they invented color, our school had some odd ballish high demand numbers. -QB was #1, when all the NFL QBs were in the teens -ILB #82 was a HUGE deal -WR numbers in the teens, again back when the #80's were all the rage -OL wanted 50's not 60's/70's
Though all RBs had to have a 30's number like most NFL RBs.
Times change. Even though we weren't very good, in small town football the game was the only thing around to do on a Friday night. So al the little paper cup football players looked up to the guys on the field and know them by their name AND number.

Have played multiple schools in recent years that have players of the same position wear similar numbers to make it harder to tell who is who on film.
For example one team had a QB rotation between #11 & #17. Which is hard to differentiate with their white uniforms and gold numbers, it make scouting a bit of a pain.

On a side note, I am phasing out 40s and 80s. No one wants them. I never ordered #1 or #69. Those numbers always attract the same kind of kid. I know you'll still have those kids on your team, but I didn't want to feed them.

I wore like 62 in JFL, 65 my fresh year, 70 my soph and Jr year and had to switch to 77 my Sr because 70 was a large and I grew out of it. Was 78 in college all 4 years because the guy in front of me took 77. My jr year of college I switched to defense full time but 99 was already taken by another jr.

Returners get the choice to keep the same number or switch to a number that isn't taken. Freshmen pick from whatever numbers are left.

Based it on grades, then weight room attendance, and the tie breaker was fundraising. Returning starter, senior year, and little sophomore has the exact same points as you? Better raise more money then him if you want that number.
I had a kid go out to his car and collect the change so that he could have 21 over another kid. All is fair when it comes to numbers.

"Returners get the choice to keep the same number or switch to a number that isn't taken." Freshmen, ROYG's and new guys are assigned a number by head coach.

We played several teams this year that had a player wearing the "0". We don't have one in our inventory, but I am sure it is coming.

No "0" yet. Returning guys get to keep the same number if they want it. Then newcomers and freshmen.

Guys keep their numbers if they want. New guys pick afterwards. I couldn’t care less what numbers kids want, we let them pick. Line take linemen numbers, skill take skill.
