Why is he still on the staff? I'd do everything I could to either get rid of him or shut him up.[/quote] I wasn't the head coach. Believe me I wish he was never on our staff.

In the past we had a guy on our staff that just couldn't let crap go. I ran a pro-style spread. We went to the franklin clinic in Nashville before the season and during lunch he is telling us how his spread package is better than Tony's. I ignored everything he said. We averaged 48 per game in our state championship year. We scored 56 in the championship game. This dumb s.o.b. actually says after the game that we really would have benefited from his unbalanced wishbone package on the goalline!!

"You don't score 70 points by being good on offense," Holgorsen said. "You score 70 points by being good on all three sides of the ball."
A refreshing way to speak for those in the Air-Raid family. Looking at things from a program perspective over just an offense perspective. Shouldn't have surprised me considering his development of downhill running and play-action in the air-raid. Makes the whole package tougher to defend and services your own defense.
I'm in the air-raid family and I recently made some mistakes in my first head coaching position that have now been corrected basically by addittion of this perspective that Dana is demonstrating now.
I think Mike Leach has been watching Holgo and Dykes and will implement some things at Washington State that weren't going on a TTU.

Eliminate the stuff you consider "fluff", and then pay attention to the most minute details of those things you have left.

When I was a young pup coaching and teaching I lived in an apartment building right behind the school property. I went through a hole in the fence, so my commute was probably 3 seconds. I was too young and dumb to know how good I had it back then.

My superintendent and principal became fans this year. "I want it all, I want it now, and I don't want to work for it".
I run a 1 back offense, I have run a 1 back offense my whole career before they hired me. I get really just 3 games. After 3 games I am told the super wants me to run the flexbone like he did when he was coaching. I told them I don't know the flexbone and I am not changing in the middle of the year.
I was fired after the season and 8 months on the job.

I am amazed that very overlooked technique that is seen quite often has not mentioned, no tricks, nothing unconventional, just good ole fashion execution will go a long way in beating goliath. I think one thing we are having a hard time with is this "If your technique is that good and your execution is so solid you probably aren't David in this situation".

Just remember that when you have been developing players for 3-4 years and winning more than you were before someone will accuse you of cheating and or recruiting.

Pay those 4 more money than the other 12. Thats what I do. My staff gets paid by thier committment to the season. Coordinators who stay late on weekends breaking down film get more and weightroom rats get paid more.

Scenario: You have a very poor team, in your first year as head coach of the program.
Do you try everything in your power to keep scores and margins of loss low?
Do you implement things you know will win if you had more talent or a couple of years in your system/ and weightroom?
Is there another option i'm missing?
Please explain your thinking.

Have a practice where the skill guys block for the line.
Then work hard on your line technique and try to make them better.

Best kid I ever coached was a lanky defensive end. He had a long body and long limbs to go with great quickness. Had 18 sacks his senior year in the top classification in our state. Once he got to the Q.B. before he had taken 2 steps from under center.
Kid goes D-1 and redshirts. During the offseason he gets in an altercation with his roomate and roomate gets stabbed.
Never plays again.

Spread Attack, This spread sheet is mind boggling at the balance of attack. This team existed before I coached, so now looking at the numbers in comparison to what I remember it, is really interesting stuff. What do you mean by balance of attack?

Give them each an assignment to research something for thier position this off season. Give them a month to tell you whether it will be done at a clinic or thru some other means. Then set up a time when he will present to you and each of the other staff members in a mini clinic before spring ball.
