Congrats to those of you who are still in season right now. But for the rest of us who are done, what do you plan on researching this off season? Maybe if some of us have the same interests we can help each other out
as for what I plan on researching through clinics, books, visits, and obtaining film of
Techniques: - After 3 years of hand blocking, I am going to start heavily study going back to shoulder blocking. The Ed Thomas Champion lineman and Nevada HIT Progression DVDs sparked my interest and gave me some good info so I am going to have to brush up on my ol wing-t techniques
- Continue researching (and assessing what we already do) slide protection and man protection techniques
- Fundamentals, Fundamentals, Fundamentals- can never stop learning different ways of doing the fundamentals
Offense: - True triple gun/pistol (veer, midline, trap-trap option, etc) in depth (I want to learn the whys, if-thens, trouble-shooting) - Attacking the over-under fronts - different ways attacking 5-2, cover 0 with constant stemming d-linemen - Notre Dame & Tulsa Screen Game - Grand Valley & Central Michigan Fade techniques - Midline out of the T, methods of gameplanning in the T - 09 film from: Michigan, Tulsa, Oregon, ( yeah I know variety of interests, love offense)
Defense: - USC Under/Over defense - 46 Bear vs Wing-T and Flexbone - D-Line techniques in Bear defense - Basics of disguising coverages - Film of: 09 jets, 08-09 USC
Special Teams: - Different individual and group drills - Frontline-crossing kick returns - Boise State and Tulsa special teams
Coaching / Program: -In depth scouting of opponoent d-line - Different ways of grading O-Line and D-Line - Grading Special Teams - innovative ways of teaching schemes to players - Improve ways of watching film as a coach and with position groups - learn about how other people conduct their two-a-days

Maybe if some of us have the same interests we can help each other out as for what I plan on researching through clinics, books, visits, and obtaining film of Techniques:- After 3 years of hand blocking, I am going to start heavily study going back to shoulder blocking. The Ed Thomas Champion lineman and Nevada HIT Progression DVDs sparked my interest and gave me some good info so I am going to have to brush up on my ol wing-t techniques - Continue researching (and assessing what we already do) slide protection and man protection techniques - Fundamentals, Fundamentals, Fundamentals- can never stop learning different ways of doing the fundamentals Offense:- True triple gun/pistol (veer, midline, trap-trap option, etc) in depth (I want to learn the whys, if-thens, trouble-shooting) - Attacking the over-under fronts - different ways attacking 5-2, cover 0 with constant stemming d-linemen - Notre Dame & Tulsa Screen Game - Grand Valley & Central Michigan Fade techniques - Midline out of the T, methods of gameplanning in the T - 09 film from: Michigan, Tulsa, Oregon, ( yeah I know variety of interests, love offense) Defense:- USC Under/Over defense - 46 Bear vs Wing-T and Flexbone - D-Line techniques in Bear defense - Basics of disguising coverages - Film of: 09 jets, 08-09 USC Special Teams:- Different individual and group drills - Frontline-crossing kick returns - Boise State and Tulsa special teams Coaching / Program:-In depth scouting of opponoent d-line - Different ways of grading O-Line and D-Line - Grading Special Teams - innovative ways of teaching schemes to players - Improve ways of watching film as a coach and with position groups - learn about how other people conduct their two-a-days A coach's work is never over. Literally on the ride home from our playoff loss i started thinking about next years team and what we had/need in terms of players and scheme. I am always looking for my fundamental and drill work with my OL I want to solidify my pass protection schemes and add a few more pass pro drills. I am wanting to go all zone schemes next year - Max in 2 back set, and a full slide in our 1 back stuff. Same for DL, but more so this year than ever. I was blessed with the beefiest DL i have ever had this year, next year i wont be so lucky so they will have to rely heavily on technique and not as much on natural ability as this years DL got away with. I want to learn more about the 3-5/3-3 defense. We wont be running it full time but we have talked about using it some next year. I want to learn more about running it, and i feel learning about it will help me better understand attacking it. I am always looking for ways to make kids faster and stronger My Goal for the off season is to become the offensive coordinator. There is a chance the position could be opening up, and if so i am going to try to talk the HC into it. But there is a chance he will want to run the O himself, so we will see. If i can not run the offense then i am going to try to be the St coordinator. Currently our DC does ST too and he just has a lot on his hands. I feel that i am ready to be a coordinator at the varsity level.

First off I would like to say how much I like this thread. From the second our season ended I began to consider what I would aim to learn in the offseason. I am have just finished my first season as a Db's coach, which was new for me coaching on the other side of the ball, as I have previously been an ST and offensive coach. I felt that in the season we were successful against offenses I have been part of in the past. I feel it's important that I familiarize myself with Wing T, and other Single Wing offenses which we often face. Besides that Iv been researching drills I can teach to better my Db's techniques. In the ST phase im researching a kick return/formation that can bring us more success with the personal we have. This season we ran a 5-4-2 criss cross wedge that was quite unsuccessful as we hadn't a return for a TD the entire season which was a first after coaching dominating ST in the past.

Techniques: - I am interested in shoulder blocking as well on combo blocks and some other situations. I have never been a shoulder blocker or used it. I am worried it will be much harder to come off to backer or etc, if we shoulder block.
- Need to improve pass pro fund., we have to get better on the punch.
Offense: - Perfect Midline - Attacking Cover 4 - ways to anticipate blood, echo and other veer stunts and expose them - Slip/Bubble screen combo
Special Teams: - I took on Punt Return/block unit, I want at least 8 blocks next season. - Dissecting Punt team film and finding weak links. Overloading this weaknesses. - Overload formations and how to protect from fakes.
Coaching / Program: -Finding weak players during breakdown. - Make priority out of team effort on O. - Self Scouting - Better staff cohesiveness on the whys and hows. - Learn about and implement better packaging systems

Technique -DL play overall, but specifically in a 2-gap system. -QB technique, i.e. Darrin Slack C4. Someone in our program needs to be able to mechanically coach our QBs, I have a hard time watching their footwork and releases at times.
Offense -The Spin. Gave up 270 rushing yards to one kid, a lot of which can be accounted for by us just having a lousy defensive game, but I'd love to understand the offense better.]
Defense -Everything, but more. I figure as long as I don't get fired/replaced this off-season, I'm gonna be the DC here for a while, so I've gotta get smarter about just about everything. -Attacking pass pro schemes better.
ST -More on punt returns, specifically. I really like my block scheme, but I'm lacking a good return scheme.
Program -Training cycles, weight lifting theory, athlete development. -Motivation -Building culture
Honestly, this offseason is just about learning MORE.

I will be looking for the answer to the question, "Do the azzes become kings, or do the kings become azzes?"
Hopefully this will help me to understand administrators better.

This is a great thread!!
This offseason I want to research more on:
Offensively: - How to incorporate a veer attack with multiple formations - How to add more screens with multiple formations - Simplify the offensive system - Pistol offense - Single wing offenses
Defensively: - blend together more 34, 46, and 42 schemes with our 35 defense - DB drills for man coverage with an emphasis on bump & run - Fire zone blitzes
Special Teams: - turning our conservative ST into an aggressive unit - Punt block & return units
Coaching/Program: - increase competition in the weight room

Offense: Split Back Veer - The head coach has decided to go back to his roots thanks to a dearth of qualified passing QB's. So, lots to learn on that front.
Defense: Mostly an evaluation of what we did last year, what worked and what didn't. The kids finally feel comfortable in a system, so we'd like to make our tweaks simple and effective. Sometimes making things simple is harder on coaches than making things complicated, but simple has always proved to be better for our kids.
A few areas we'll look at are:
-Adjuster position from 1 high to 2 high shell
-D line adjustments to TE
-Blitz Package

Technique: - Working on teaching fullbacks how to pass block better - Work with FB on better catching technique and how to release smoother in the flats - Work on re-learning how to read guards with linebackers in the 4-4 defense, 5-3, and 46 bear. - Like stated above going over the fundamentals, too many great athletes out there that sorely lack the fundamentals of football.
Offense: - Learn the Georgia Tech triple option. - Attacking odd and even fronts, how to attack the Okie defense. - Would be interested in learning Sonny {censored}’s Air Zona stuff. - Break down and analyze UW- Whitewater’s running game.
Defense: -USC’s Over/ Under defense. - Lean TCU’s 4-2-5 defense and ask around if it is possible to make this like a 4-4 or use 4-4 personnel and run the TCU Blitz package. - Learn Bama’s man schemes. - Learn more about schemes that use a rush end. - Learn more about about line stunts/ blitz packages out of the 4-3 under/over and split 4-4 defense - Hopefully see about going either to a University of Iowa or PSU clinic.
Special Teams: - A-11esque, Florida punt formation. - Work on leaning how to coach kickers, punters. - Learn to coach long snappers also interesting option. - decide what is the best blocking schemes for kickoffs.
Program: - Engrain a devotion to off-season strength and conditioning programs. - Emphasize to my players that this is their program and they are only as strong and their physical and academic weakest links. - Re-establish a commitment to perfection of technique.

Defense: D-Line technique and drills. I have to find a better way to teach kids how to fight pressure.
Offense: Pass Pro drills. Daily line practice organization. I have to become more efficient to maximize the time that i have during practice.

TECHNIQUES: D-line. Drills and how to take on and defeat all the blocks. I haven't coached d-line in over 6 years. Forgot a lot of stuff. Tackling. We had poor tackling this year. If anyone can refer me to a outstanding tackling video please let me know. Combo Blocking for the O-line. Had problems coming off onto lb's OFFENSE: Pistol offense Shotgun Zone Fly Offense/Playaction Passing out of it Screen Game to slow down the blitz DEFENSE: Double Eagle Flex. After running it this season and just staying in a base formation it's time to unleash the power of this Defense. Patten Reading and seeing if you can blend it into the Double Eagle Flex. 4-3 with 9 men in the box like the U. of Arizona does.

Isn't it amazing to see how many people want to learn more about the option? A few years ago, it was the spread. Now, we're at a point where people seem to want to evolve and merge the two. Good poop!

Refining ways to teach kids that will hit major learning styles. tarrant - that is an area I have always been interested in. With technology just getting better and better, I am always on the look out for the new ways of "reaching them". Especially since I am not a teacher, I always try to work extra hard at this aspect of coaching

Currently, I am studying Ted Seay's 2LD pdf religiously.
I'm also tinkering with/thinking through 5 wide offense.
Like someone else has also said, this may change.

Especially since I am not a teacher, I always try to work extra hard at this aspect of coaching I'm not a teacher either, by day i work at a charter school that works with kids who have mental health issues as a co-facilitator in the classroom and in therapy groups. It has however opened my eyes to a myriad of different ways to reach kids and how they react to different learning stimuli.

When I was in HS (which wasnt too terribly long ago, only an 05 graduate) all of our coaches were still the old school approach of drill seargents with no real relationship building with players.

Offense: I want to learn more about the double wing as ran by Morrison, IL and I want to learn even more about the single wing. I ran the single wing this past year and loved what it can do, but I've only uncovered the tip of the ice burg.
Defense: I want to learn more about the 33 stack. I ran a watered down version of it this past year and there are a lot of things I love about it, but I need to learn more. I also want to learn more about various 44 variations.
Special Teams: I want to learn how to teach a good onside kick.

This year I want to continue learning more about the 4-4/4-2-5. I want to have a more hands on approach with our DL technique. I was not able to focus as much on them this year as I would have liked and the coach I had working with them was more of an OL coach that focused more on the OL. I want to be a better LB coach teaching key recognition and find a couple more ways to mix things up in our coverage.
I want to improve my ways of teaching and leading and finding more ways to incorporate Character and integrity in these young mens lives. Also being a young DC I want to get to some good clinics and ask a million questions to coaches that hopefully wont mind.
