Well...in California...they have "bowl" games. The CIF says the winners of those games are "state champions". But since it's not a true playoff system there are a bunch of section title winners (which is like winning the state). There are 10 sections in CA and 44 overall section title winners (only 8 play in the bowl games).
That being said....our squad went 13-1 and won the Sac Joaquin D1 (highest classification) Section title. We almost got picked for the bowl game.
I was lucky to be the DC of this group of guys.

I haven't won anything personally (well, Funniest Costume at a Halloween party when I was 8 and $50 on a scratch-off ticket a few years ago) but my team has won five.

I coached in two state title games, went 1-1. Wasn't a coordinator but we had a lot of say in the game plan and play calling on that staff as ast coaches.

Was DC for 2008 Div. IV state champions. 2009 we lost in quarter-finals. I would be interested to know what Offense and Defense these state champions used.
We are Spread/Air Raid offense and Odd Stack Defense.

I have not won one as a coach but did win one as a player but I was wondering about a couple things when reading this thread. I understand the state chapionship mindset on a player level but there are some aspects of that mindset I was wondering about on the coaching level.
From a coaching prespective:
What are the major differences between your state championship teams and teams that did not win it?
Did you ever go into a season and say this team is very very good but there is something missing or vice versa where you said this team is not as a talented but I have the feeling we are going a long way?
How do you handle the long season with yourself, family, other coaches, and team?
Does it take a lot out of you or energize you more when you get a state game and lose?
Thanks and congrats to all coaches that have had the great opportunity of winning or at least coaching in a state championship

Have never won a state championship. In our state at least, winning one is an unrealistic goal for many programs and communities.
Consider:
Last fall was 35th year of playoffs. For the last 11 seasons, 256 schools qualify. In any given fall approximately 620 schools play 11-man football.
Only 103 different schools have won the 220 championships, or 17 per cent of those competing. 75 of the titles, or 34%, have been won by the same eight schools (one closed few years ago).
Further, despite the expansion in 1999, there are 83 schools (13%) that have never made the playoffs or done so only once. Another 71 (11%) have made the playoffs twice or more but never won a postseason game.
So 83% of football-playing HS have not won a state championship, and almost a quarter have been basically non-competitive when it comes to the playoff system. One-third of the championships have been won by 1% of the participating schools.

From a coaching perspective:
What are the major differences between your state championship teams and teams that did not win it? This years team had players that accepted their role. We didn't have ME first players. It was not my most talented team at all Did you ever go into a season and say this team is very very good but there is something missing or vice versa where you said this team is not as a talented but I have the feeling we are going a long way? 2 years ago I thought we were State Champ material. What was missing was a true TEAM attitude. My QB was more worried about his stats. Kids fighting with each other in the locker room. A lot of cancers. Lost in the 1st round of the play-offs to a team we beat by 3 TDs in week 1.
How do you handle the long season with yourself, family, other coaches, and team? I got lucky, my wife caught football fever. She got into going to the bar with the coaches after the games. She liked the attention in the papers & TV.
Does it take a lot out of you or energize you more when you get a state game and lose? Can't answer because we won the only one I have ever been to but if we would have lost I think I would still be hurting.
Thanks and congrats to all coaches that have had the great opportunity of winning or at least coaching in a state

Our program has been to the dance 6 times and won 2 of them. I have found that luck is a huge factor for winning a title as a small school. 3 of the 4 times we lost the team that beat us would have beat us 10 out of 10 times if we played. We have also lost 3 times in the semi-finals 2 of those games were decided by less than a touchdown and both times that team went on to pound the team they played in the finals by 30+...at least in our state sometimes the toughest games are in the earlier rounds of the playoffs.

Our local HS has won 3 consecutive 4A TX state titles. Winning is truly contagious. You can see it in how the coaches prepare, how the kids work and the unbelievable support the community has for the program! It has even filtered down to the Pop Warner teams in our area. They watch their hero's win on Friday night, then do their best to emulate them on Saturday mornings! ;-)

Catoc if I wasn't me, I would hate me as well. What is crazy about getting on this staff? This is the coach that gave me a chance when the other local high schools told me they had no openings for the staff. And yes I know I am pretty much ruined now for other programs.
