I was at the Minneapolis Clinic this weekend, did anyone else think the vendors were really thin this year or have I just been going to clinics long enough to get number to them.
I didn't see Hudl there, I also didn't see the table with 1,000,000 coaches choice DVDs.

LOL a few years ago something happened at a nearby school where a big time donor was the OC. I don't recall exactly what went down but he was told that he couldn't be a booster and coach. He said phuc you all and took everything with him that he donated, including the field turf. Wait, dude literally had them remove the turf from the field? Did the government take back the tax deduction

I am going to try to shift this topic from what parents and players can't do to what we expect and hope they do. Gonna give each parent a questionnaire of 4 questions and keep them. Questions will be... 1.)list a measurable goal for your son and this team for this year... 2.)What do you want your experience as a parent to be this year.... 3.)What can you do to help create this experience for you and others?? what can coaches do?? 4.)If goals can't be reached, what do you want your son's experience to be like? Not sure I like #4 100% bc of the negative context it suggests about not being successful, but I think trying to get parents to start off positively and lay out what you would like from them is a better way to go. I learned from experience... IF YOU LOSE THE PARENTS IT IS ONLY A MATTER OF TIME BEFORE THEY CONVINCE THE KIDS aND YOU LOSE THEM TOO!!! Did you get this from that girls basketball coach that did something similar to this? Forgot his name but remember reading about it online.

I like music during practice. Had to rip a kid today as every other word was the N word.

How do you create energy and excitement at practice without going live, doing nut crackers and beating kids up? We seem flat at practice. Kids don't seem excited to be at football... and we won a conference title last season. We aren't a doormat.

I hear them say that combat veterans are at a higher risk for CTE. This doesn't make sense to me as a veteran. Most combat experiences are a 1 time thing, not a multiple impact event. One explosion (humvee hits IED, RPG explodes,). It's not a multiple impact situation. So if one impact causss CTE isn't everyone susceptible to this if they were in a car accident, fell down stairs, or sneezed hard?
Seems like something that definitely can be linked to head blows but seems like much more of the population could have it than just football players.

I was offered this helmet for $550 plus a free air XP helmet.... what I don't get about these things if that if one helmet is so much "safer" than another how could you as a company sell something so much less "safe" than another product you sell. $90,000 Landcruiser. $18,000 Corolla. Apples to oranges comparison--- helmets have one function... protect players from head injuries. Cars are modes of transportation that are also used as status symbols hence different price range/ luxury cars/ motorcycles. What I'm saying is a company telling me I can buy this super safe helmet and they will throw in this not as safe helmet for free.... so what do I tell the kid I give the not as safe helmet to? He's not as important?

Anyone have these yet? I wish they were a little bigger... but thinking of buying 3.. Here's a 52" ring with letters on the side for a "look at what you're tackling" drill: www.krauskollc.com/p/7Tested and approved. Got three of these this weekend. We used them this week and like them a lot.

I like our local high school team passing league run by d3 college in town. Our kids playing catch. I put 0 stock in winning, just want kids playing and thinking football. I don't want any of my kids playing on a travel 7 on 7 team ever. Money grab.

I hate all ambiguous phrases that are yelled at kids. If you don't have something specific, that will help a kid, just shut up. Baseball is full of mindless phrases repeated by coaches. Baseball is a mindless activity in itself.

Obviously athletics/ football are valued a lot more where most of you are from than where I coach... how much do they pay you to coach? I get $4400 which is less than the dance coach, gymnastics coach, both basketball teams and wrestling.

950 kids in Wisconsin
Our coaches office is shared by all male sports in our ancient locker room. Is probably 12x12. Has one old school metal teachers desk, no chair. A 2 seat couch, wrestling scale. Bathroom and shower with no door separating it from rest of office.
Has some old lockers in it to store stuff in but most coaches don't. It's not real inviting and we never hang out in there except prior to and after a game. It's kind of a dungeon and I'm not sure the shower has been cleaned since the Reagan administration

in my classes, fidget spinner use is up but phone usage is down. So there's that. That's a win. Probably less distracting than Snapchat or playing a game. At my school we have these things where kids store their phones for the hour. I don't use mine because they can use their phones during a lot of my lessons and honestly they aren't that huge of a problem for me (a kid or two every hour will abuse their phone but overall it isn't too rampant). I need one of those simply so all my kids can count to 40, and I teach high school.

How many helmets do y'all typically have rejected when you send them in for reconditioning? I bought 55 new helmets 3 years ago and sent them in this year. Just got them back and 4 were rejected. That seems high to me for 3 year old helmets. What brand are helmets, and what company rejected them? Is the same guy you buy helmets from rejecting them? Is he trying to pad his pockets by selling you more helmets? Could you ask for specifics about why they were rejected or ask company for replacements since they lasted far less than typical lifespan?

There was a college team here that did all practices at 6am so that off staff coaches could make it and no missed classes from kids. Problem I have with morning practice is you never play at that time of day and mind is not in optimal shape. I don't think it sets kids up for success.

I had a ref threaten to throw me out of a game once when I calmly asked if a penalty was thrown for my wide receiver not breaking the bottom of numbers. (No joke, I'm chill on sidelines never yell at refs). So I'm not real sure how this would go over. I'd probably get tossed for trying to do the right thing.

Does each coach get 15 hours? If so can they be shared among staff? If that is true I'll just take hours from a few guys on staff who don't plan jack and I'll be fine.

Dub Maddox - the GOAT No Speaker has ever made me feel so bad that everything i have been doing is wrong and there is a better, simpler way to do it I did see Dub in SF and he was very good. I really like how he is breaking down the oppoenent. I do have a BIG BUG on what is going on at the Glazier Clinics and that is: "hey here is a quick sample of what I am doing and for another $600 I'll tell you more," or "hey come buy my DVD's and other material." First of all, as a football program we have already invested some $500 for access to the clinics, then as teachers, or other workers, we used our bank of leave time to go, many of us also paid our own way for travel, meals, hotels costs, etc. Secondly, and more importantly, the idea of coaching clinics has always been to share knowledge based in the concept of "someone has shared with me, so it is my turn to give back and share what I have learned from others." Not hey lets see how much I can make with this deal.... I told my coaches that I think this is our last year of Glazier because I am getting disgusted with the money grubbing. Am I the only one? I'm fine with guys selling their stuff at Glazier. I think Glazier has the best line up each year for the best price. For $450, I can bring 10 coaches to a 2 day clinic... that is a pretty good deal in my opinion. Plus all of the online content. I think its a good deal.

Mark McElroy from Saddleback CA was great on fly sweep. Wish I could get film from him on it, loved his unbalanced stuff.
Jed Kennedy Brookfield Central WI on his program building was excellent. A lot of great ideas on how to get buy in from not only kids but community.
I didn't go to any that were awful-- I have gotten a lot better through the years of weeding out the ones that don't relate to my talent level, scheme and what not.
Worst thing is the speaker who doesn't talk on their topic at all.

And effort. An player can miss a 1 on 1 tackle if the ball carrier is a better athlete. But I don't care who you are, you can't jump-cut a gang tackle. Also understand that having your starting D tee off on your scout team running back probably won't make them better tacklers, as I'm guessing if he is your scout team running back, he probably isn't starting for anyone else in your league either. I highly frown upon going live vs scout team very often because its not realistic and gives you an unrealistic sense of confidence. You are better off coaching the heck out of run fits, and effort and getting all of your guys around the scout team ball carriers than you are having the first guy there blast a sophomore. You are right that you can't jump cut a gang tackle... so coach the swarm, and getting guys there rather than going live and getting guys hurt.

Was watching our largest school state championship game yesterday.... realized that the winning coach was wearing a visor and made me think of this thread. Then thought... this guy has won 4 straight state championships and has the longest winning streak in the nation.... I think I might get a visor for next year as well.

Thats the stuff we have to workout. It would be the same as team but just in short spurts and switching which team is out there more... The change over time will be more ... good thoughts Part of me fears that your team may be very good at transitioning but not very good at execution. This seems like a lot of wasted minutes in practice... much more than the kids standing around during team... If you want the kids to not stand around during team Run 2 scout teams, go half line, do more group work,

Coaches,
Do any of you get uneasy about coaching due to all of the concussion information out there? The last few seasons I have found myself pondering how safe the sport is. We restrict contact, and do everything we can to keep kids safe. We had hardly any concussions until the last 2 weeks of the season somehow we had 6-7 and we were doing less contact than we had all year! I have had 2 of those athletes tell me that they weren't going to play next year due to concussions and they were pretty valuable kids who started games. I love the game and the character it builds, the opportunity to teach but the concussion scare gets to me and makes me question staying in the game.
Anyone else have thoughts on this?

The person on the right in my avatar is my wife (with our grandson).
I'm pretty sure people have assumed for some time I'm a "success" regardless of how I dressed.
And she's probably been as big a factor in me getting some jobs as my interview, resume, or wardrobe.
They might have been fifty-fifty on me, but definitely wanted her in the community!
(She's as beautiful a person as she is on the outside). Thought for sure that was your daughter! Out kicked your coverage like all good coaches should do. You out kicked your coverage... and i still can't get my punter to kick the ball out of bounds on command. Kicking game never was my thing.

Good to know you get the slappies up at that level/country too. Our DL coach is just a yeller for the sake of yelling. He likes to make real long drawn out speeches too before, during AND after all games. He kept the JV DL for about 15 extra minutes last night after our final game while the rest of the team cleaned up the field. If this guy was on my staff, he'd be a former DL coach. Don't have time for yellers and long winded ones at that.
