Wanted to get an idea of coaches' offices around the country.
How big is your school?
How big/nice is your coaches office?
What rules do you have regarding the office for kids and/or coaches?
We are one of the smallest schools in the state, but we got a new field house about 10 years ago. Our office is big enough for 7-8 coaches with our own desks, window into the weight room, huge whiteboard, fridge, hd projector for film, Directv, wifi with google chrome, and our own bathroom with a standup shower and coaches lockers.
I think it is pretty nice for as small a school as we are....
Some basic rules:
1). Kids must knock before coming in to ask a question.
If they do not knock, they get told to back outside and try again.
2). They do NOT hang out in there. Get your questions answered and bounce.
3). Put the food in the microwave to protect it from mice. We are surrounded by cornfields.
4). Spray after....close door from bathroom to office if you went nuclear.
And the BIG ONE: Do not ask us for anything on game day! Usually a freshman loses his life week one because he needs a drawstring 30 minutes before kick off.

About 1100 kids in NC.
Office is probably about average. We have an old school and it hasn't really been renovated much. HC has his own personal office that is attached via hallway with a bathroom. There's two entrances, one to the locker room, and that's where the kids come to ask questions. We have a big whiteboard with a table in front of it, but nobody really sits there. We have a bunch of attached desks around the perimeter. Two computers and one of those motorized drop down screens with a pretty good projector.
Our rules are pretty much the same as you said. I wish we had Directv in there, but my wife doesn't.

In regards to freshmen asking stupid things on game day......Had a freshman who was our backup kicker so he traveled. We stop on the way to a road game for sandwiches and a quick walk thru. After handing out sandwiches, he approaches the head coach to ask if we had any mayo for his sandwich. The HC told me to get the kid the freak away from him. I'm the special teams guy.

We have a pretty small office. Let's say 10X12 to be generous. Then off of it there's a bathroom, locker, shower area that is slightly bigger.
We enforce the knock rule. My preference is to keep the door locked so that kids on the outside can't lock it even if they try because I get tired of telling them to knock on the damn door. Seriously, are we moving so far in society that parents don't teach their kids to knock these days? Drives me nuts (goes with kids wanting to talk to me like we're friends--I think it's cause kids are involved in adult conversations to much--when I was a kid, when the grown folks were talking, I was told to get away and do something else.)
ANYWAY... haha
We don't necessarily have a rule on food protection for varmints, but I'd say we're going to give you {censored} if you decide to leave food around that will begin to smell terrible. It happens.
What we're shooting towards is starting to win enough that we can do what we heard (with lots of evidence) a very quality team in the area used to do when their legendary coach was still there----- they had a vending machine in coach's office, and one of the blank buttons at the bottom was actually (didn't say Dr. Pepper or Coca Cola) was actually a cold beer. And nobody said anything about it, even though most anybody that has anything to football in our area knows that it happened. This is the same school that as of 2012 (last time I was there watching a playoff game) still allowed smoking in the stands. HAHA. I mean, officially, there were signs prohibiting it, but LOTS did it anyway, haha.

no field house
no coaches office
we are also weird in that there is no central PE office (most other schools in NorCal have one connected to boys locker room) there are 2 small offices that connect, but not one big central PE office... which is also weird because there is one on the girls side, just not boys side.
when i got hired full time there were no available offices in the PE area One of the portables was open (convenient location on blacktop near PE area)
i asked if i could use it as my office/Football meeting room... they said ok.
I taught health this year so i just used it as my classroom and my office.
having a football fieldhouse/office would be great but dont see it ever happening here

It's about the size of an average room. White boards on 3 walls, 2 couches, a table, some chairs and a desk.
Kids have to knock, mainly because it automatically locks.
We aren't really strict about no players in the office. Usually, if a coach is there really early, a few kids will come in and talk or hang out. But once it starts to fill up, everybody leaves.
If the plumbing backs up, it leaks. If it rains too much, it leaks. Just a different type of liquid.
The best advantage is that it's the coolest and warmest room in the building. And the couches are pretty good for a nap.

950 kids in Wisconsin
Our coaches office is shared by all male sports in our ancient locker room. Is probably 12x12. Has one old school metal teachers desk, no chair. A 2 seat couch, wrestling scale. Bathroom and shower with no door separating it from rest of office.
Has some old lockers in it to store stuff in but most coaches don't. It's not real inviting and we never hang out in there except prior to and after a game. It's kind of a dungeon and I'm not sure the shower has been cleaned since the Reagan administration

School I'm at now, one of the biggest schools in the state, one of the better programs in the state just got a new field house but the office is kind of thrown together.
Last school had about 1400 kids, best office I've had. Desks for 10-12 coaches, we all had a leather highback chair. HC was adamant about using your own chair too. Don't f up another coach's chair by plopping down into it like a slob.
We had a conference table with projector and pulldown screen in the middle. HC had his personal office in the back.
As far as rules went:
1. Players knock before entering. 2. Players do not hang out in there. Ask your question or get what you need and then leave. 3. It is a workspace that is meant to be productive. Keep it clean.

School of 350 in Central Illinois. We don't have a coaches office currently. I'm working on that as it looks like I won't have a permanent classroom to teach my 3 classes in (for those of you that remember me from the insane teaching schedule thread, my new job is way, way less teaching intensive). There is an empty room that they have used for refs for bball that I'm trying to make my/coaches offices.
Old school was 175 kids and we just used my classroom. There were only w boys HCs in the building anyway.

270 kids
Fairly nice. 5 big desks for each coach. 2 whiteboards. Couple closets. TV that im not sure if works or not. Mini fridge. Bathroom and shower. File cabinets. Microwave. Projector. Wifi. Printer/copier. Laminator. Each coach has a desk chairs, couple random extras in there as well.
Not sure if kids knock or not. Never really paid attention to it.
Sometimes a couple kids will hang out with a coach in there and talk.
#1 rule is last person to leave has to lock the door.

Small school about 350 kids
Offense and Defejse each have separate office with 3 desks in each. Head coach has own office. Tvs in all offices with computer hook ups. Main common area with a long table with about 12 chairs.
Large projector and white board in common area. Refrigerator and sink. Coaches locker room has 8 lockers and 2 showers. It's a pretty good set up

Separate offices? Desks for everybody? You guys are blowing my mind. Our office is maybe 6x12 ... two desks, because it doubles as the PE office; an old couch, a couple of stools and an old wooden bench, two white boards and a mini fridge. Game days, when there are freshmen coaches, team doctors and video guys in there with the rest of us, if you stand up you might never get to sit down again. But they're all foxhole guys, and we've won a bunch of sectional titles the last 20-something years, so it's all good.
And, yes, the kids have to knock, even if the door's open.

Obviously athletics/ football are valued a lot more where most of you are from than where I coach... how much do they pay you to coach? I get $4400 which is less than the dance coach, gymnastics coach, both basketball teams and wrestling.

HC has his office.
Defensive staff have an office 6 built in desks Table 2 white boards Pull down screen protector About 15'x15'
Offensive office Same basic set up but has another desk because longer and narrower
Plus a team/ multipurpose room that has a partition that can be moved
However it was a remodel/add on so it is wonky. The offensive office was the old training room and the remodel basically turned the defensive office into a hallway

1050 kids. Got a new field house 10 years ago. There are two coaches offices. One for the HC. It's about 12 by 12. Kids have to knock to go in there. The other I (the D.C) have a desk and a computer. But it's really a staff office. A little bigger than the HC office. Maybe 15x15. Kids don't have to knock. It's an open door policy. But we can tell them to leave at any time we need to.

Our "office" is in between the locker room and weight room in an old converted bus garage that probably was made and never updated since the late 70's/early 80's. . One desk, 6 chairs maybe, and a mini fridge. No technology at all. And best of all an old school bathroom with no door which is directly across from the outside door. So you have to be very careful taking a leak that no one opens the door to the outside. We have to watch film in the computer lab as a team and staff. They are remodeling this and building a new weight room so it should be nicer now. Kids don't even try and walk through since it's so small and they know the HC will flip it if they do.

We're a 5A school with about 1700 students.
Our office is 15x15 plus a walk-in closet and bathroom. There are five desks but only the two coaches who work in the building really use theirs. The rest are mostly for putting things on. We have one large and one small whiteboard.
The players are expected to knock and one of our coaches is a retired Marine non-com so that usually isn't a problem. Sometimes kids do want to hang around in the office and it's hard to begrudge them since it's the only air conditioned room in that part of the building. When we tell them to lave they do.

Ours is 12x15. We recently took the two desks out and just have chairs and a fridge.
No real rules, most kids knock.

Are you guys just flat dominating everyone even though that you are a small school? We can be 8-0 and still have trouble getting the damn lines painted on the practice fields, haha. We don't do that often, so I guess we need to always do it. I know some schools are great about it and some aren't. But hearing that you ALL have your own desks makes me a little sad that I don't even have my own chair if I'm the last guy into the coach's office haha.

I'm at a 3A school in North Carolina, a school of about 1,100 students. The coaches office used to be a glorified hallway connected to the weightroom, once we had about 5 coaches in there it was full. A few years ago they moved us into the old 3D lab right across from the weightroom. Because it was a old 3D lab it still has about 15 computers, the other half of the room is big enough to hold about 40 chairs with a ceiling mounted projector for film. Other than that we just have a few tables for meeting and a full size fridge. The kids must knock before coming in, but it is where we hang out on Thursday and Friday in season to watch movies and what not.

In the doorway of our office we have put a piece of blue tape on the ground... Players know to stand behind that until a Coach gives them direction, talks with them or the player knocks on the door to get our attention..
