I am a high school coach that will be running a youth camp. What are some good ideas (fun games/drills) to do? Also, If any of you have a template of a youth camp format I would appreciate looking at it. Let me know your ideas. Thank you. PM me your info and I’ll send you what we have.

I dont know if you can find them anymore since they are shutting down operations. But Russell dry fit shorts are the best shorts ever made. The Russell coaching shorts were top notch.

Not sure. I feel like we may have 40-45 kids this year but 30+ will be able to help us in some way which is great for our level and area. However I’d love to have 60 kids.

I’m excited to see the growth of our team. We started 3 freshmen and 4-5 sophomores on each side of the ball. They won 6 games. Excited to see if they get better this year.

Had a similar situation last year with a coach. Not a great spot to be in but I’m gonna coach ball even if I have to do it myself.

They don’t need to run them. They have a legend at QB who checks them into the right play extremely accurately. Zero reason for them to adapt to it so far.

We let them go home if time permits. They have to be back at 5:15 for home games. Usually if away they have time to run to Subway and then come back.

Texas guys should come to KY where $2,000 per year is an assistant coaching salary and you’re expected to work all off season outside of Dead period. Weights in winter, spring ball, summer workouts/weights/conditioning, then the season. Best of all if you coach you’ll probably have a harder time getting a job as a teacher! ya but you guys have way nicer weather and you get to live in a "holler" and drink bourbon ..everything I know about Kentucky comes from the TV show Justified (which is a good show) We do have lots of hollers and bourbon.

I’d get some film just Incase there is something there that is totally different than what you see. In the regular season this year it’s possible we see very little 10 personnel. If we knew we had a team that was predominantly in 10 we’d work it in for the offseason/preseason in scout. I don’t think the first time you see something should be the week you see it. We play one DW team but we will work on it in July.
Maybe that’s the wrong way to do it but I know we’ve handled contrarian offenses for our area better because of doing it like that than we used to. I would say we may defend the contrarian teams in our area as well as most anyone that doesn’t simply out talent them.
If you don’t see something that requires some attention, I wouldn’t worry about it. You could spend time working for a coach who you think will rum triple and he ends up running the air raid.
Long story short we try to prepare for what we may see but we’re not in detail until we play them as far as really trying to scout that team.

Ours is pretty well split, though everyone has a secondary role. KYCoach probably has the biggest crossover from both sides on our staff as he has our WRs and CBs. The others are primarily one way but help with a position group on the other side.
I coach wherever. I’m the HC so whatever is needed. This year I’m coaching RBs, I hate offense but don’t mind RBs. I’ll still Coach our DBs and call our defense.
I’ve only coached on split staffs. Haven’t been lucky enough to have a full time JV or Frosh staff. Even if we did I think I’d prefer to split and have offensive coaches and defensive coaches.

Starting to get responses from teams in the area. The first question I was asked is: Do the 8th grade teams/ages include kids that are getting ready to enter high school? I guess I didn't think about this...I assume it would be for teams that are going to be 7th and 8th graders in the fall? Any quick feedback is appreciated. Apologies, I haven't been lurking this forum as much as I used to... The question to your answer about 8th graders going into 9th, 7th going into 8th, and 6th going into 7th is this: I thought long and hard about this, of course we wanted to win its just the competitive side of me but is your primary goal to fundraise or to win a 7-on-7 tournament? That answer will determine what you want to do in regards to that. We decided the fundraiser was more important and allowed all 8th (going into freshmen) to enter. We ended up beating them anyway which was kind of a cool confidence thing for our kids. As for 6th going into 7th, our district doesn't allow that due to liability issues so check with your district since we did this prior to the current school year ending. I didn't think of charging gate money, interesting as there was quite a large crowd out there from the many different schools. If you can pull it off then by all means go for it. Why would a 9th grade team want to go to this?

Looking at making the switch to these or even the 5 pad model (don’t want to forget knee pads on game days so most likely 7 pad). Anyone have any experience using these ....? Was thinking about having the players purchase their own... saves all the boxes of random squishy pads all over the place , mismatches , missing sets , and allows us to eliminate the need for practice pants all together as we would just wear our “pride” shorts over the girdle for most practices . Anyone recommend a brand or rep? Thanks 7 pad girdles are lifesavers.

We’re bringing back the first playoff team in school history throw season during a game. When your team has honored past teams what are some of the things you’ve done for those players? This is the 25th anniversary so the team isn’t that old. I think we’ve got enough aged out helmets to give to the coaching staff from that season.

We’re starting one. Our entry fee will cover officials but we will get the gate and concession money. Our MS will keep the 7th grade entry fee $ and set up concessions on that field. How much will you charge at the gate? $3 for adults, $2 for students.

We get zero from the district. We have to fundraiser everything. Our booster club, gate and concessions fund the program. District used to pay for helmet reconditioning but they’ve stopped. We have to pay for our buses.
There may be programs funded like ours but I don’t believe anyone gets less than we do. We basically work all year round to try to get what we need.

You better have both to be successful. In fact you need Strategy, Culture and talent. Not sure which is the most important. I’ve seen some great game plans lose because of culture or talent. And I’ve seen places with great culture and talent lose because of Xs and Os.
It’s unrealistic to think that you’ll always outscheme your opponent. It’s unrealistic to think that your culture makes your program top notch by itself. It’s unrealistic to think that talent alone is enough.
Strategy is necessary to win games. Culture is necessary to have the kids to win games. Culture builds roster sizes and gets kids invested in practice, weights, film. Talent determines whether or not you have a chance in a game.

If you saw our pregame you’d either love it or think we’re nuts. Most teams were in the think were nuts category. One opponent legitimately got mad. Legitimately got mad? So, the opponent had an actual reason to get mad? ...or he "actually" got mad? There IS a difference, you know... Our kids “hit” in our circle drill and clap and yell. He got mad and started yelling at us. Maybe he had a reason?

Nothing wrong with it IMO. Can’t let one person ruin the rest of the kid’s playing experience. I usually have a conversation with them in their exit interview for the season and address these issues. They seem to work themselves out. Kid will straighten out or quit.

Can’t imagine a reason for having a rule about hair length More important things to worry about for us We could have a rule like that but our 6’5” TE would get in the car and go home.

We had our team camp at school. Kids brought air mattresses and we slept in the gym. Our kids preferred it to a college campus. With other sports we planned to be out of the gym during their practices but it really wasn’t a problem.
We have cameras in our school which helps liability wise and our kids only went into the school to eat or to watch practice film. They had one route they were allowed to go. There was zero reason for them to be there otherwise.
My advice is to make sure you have proper supervision. Obviously you want kids to have some space but you can’t just leave them in a gym and go ha g out with the coaches.
As for effort it was no worse than any other camp. We had events every night under the lights. 7 on 7 (including lineman 7 on 7), had a bonfire type thing we went and did, had a very light contact scrimmage with the winners getting ice cream and the losers got popsicles ( fast whistle).
