Coaches,
Does your state have a limitation on when you can start wearing helmets? We've got the discussion in my state that helmets aren't going to be allowed until July 22nd. Which would pretty much be horrible for any HS 7v7's. Along with that full pads aren't supposed to be wore until August 1st. Our school system starts pretty early, I believe next year we are starting Aug. 10th, and that would put limitations on summer camp (we do 2-a-days at home). Do any other states do this or just us?

I was under the impression every state had a rule on this. We cant have organized practices until about August 16th or so. Which means no helmets until then. I'm in Rhode Island.

Our first scrimmage is the 14th. That gives us 9 days of practice to get ready for real game situations. I don't that isn't enough time to get an athlete ready for the heat.

PA is so wack on this it's hard to even explain...
No spring ball here but if you get a letter from your principal you can be in shells basically when ever you want. Spring summer when ever with no contact. We start July 1 in shells and go for about a month 3 days a week. Then our state association decided they needed to mandate a "heat acclimation" period for 3 consecutive days no less than 72 hours before your first official padded contact practice any player who misses a day starts over until they do three straight days. Hear they may make it 5 days soon. Meanwhile just about everyone in the state is holding summer work outs which apparently the association doesn't care about because we have no dead periods or no contact periods of time. It's mind boggling sometimes.

In SC we can go out in helmets most of Dec and Jan then again from March 9 all the way through our season. 10 days in May to be in shoulder pads. 10 7on7 competitions during the summer, but as much practice as you want. One dead week the last week of July. Real practice starts August 1 (actually it starts the Friday before August 1, usually July 30 or so). The first 3 days in August actually have more restrictions than June/July do. Also there are far more restrictions on how much time you can spend lifting/practicing in August than in June/July.

Virginia: No helmets until August unless you're in an organized 7 on 7 tournament.

Michigan: After school is out can wear helmets at 7-on-7s (maximum seven days) or camps (maximum ten days of own camp). No other pads.
Practice begins this year August 10, helmets can be worn right away. First day of full pads that Friday (8-14).
First games weekend of August 28.
School begins for most day after Labor Day.

In Indiana we do not have spring ball. Once your season is completed, it will be June (when you school is out for the summer) before you can put helmets on again. We have newer regulations in the summer that only allow for 12 days of helmets/shoulder pads during June/July. Only 5 of those days can be competitions (7 on 7, team camps, etc). So 7 of those days available to you are simply on your own type of things. There has also been talk of this getting restricted even further. If your school starts before August, you cannot practice until August begins. For example, our first student day is July 27 this year. That whole first week of school we cannot practice, but just condition.

We start a week earlier in our county. So we start April 20, we have to petition each year because school in our county ends a week earlier.

Wow, in Texas we dont get any kind of pads, no handheld shields, nothing, all spring unless you do 2 weeks of full pad spring ball. Absolutely nothing in summer, and we don't start with any pads or helemts or anything until like aug 6 if you do spring ball or july 28ish if you forego spring ball for 2 a days.

The trade-off is we, like most if not all northern states, do not have Spring Football of any kind.

Connecticut, Michigan and Rhode Island have it figured out.
Well, anybody that doesn't actually start practice until August does.
But, starting practice the 1st, 2nd week of August and not playing until the 1st, even 2nd weekend of September? Who would ever think such a thing? Making football the fall sport it was meant to be.

We can wear helmets year round now in MS. Can't start practice until around 1st Monday in August, 1st 3 days in only helmets then 2 in shells before you can go full pads. We get 15 days of spring ball at the end of the school year also. We are allowed 7 dates for 7v7 with other teams in the summer.

In Texas only 5A and 6A schools can have spring football. I am now at a 4A high school, and we cannot wear helmets until our 5th day of practice in August. We cannot use any equipment, including stand up dummies, sleds, or bags until the official practice start day in August. We cannot coach our kids in football outside of school hours until the season begins. We do, however, have an athletic period everyday where we can work football skills, but no equipment is allowed. We are not allowed to coach our players in 7-on-7 during the summer. We have a couple of parents that run our summer 7-on-7 program.

Arkansas...year round helmets, Spring ball in late April, May...You must declare three weeks to go in pads, for no more than 2 hours a day for 9 days during the 3 weeks. and no two consecutive days. You can go to as many Team camps as you want during the summer and go full pads except knee pads. During season you can only go full pads 3 days a week including games. No two consecutive days.

CA. We have spring ball but in shorts and tshirts, no helmets until fall camp opens (first full week in August). I dont know if its state wide or by section, but our section helmets only first 2 days of camp and no contact, bags, sleds etc. 3rd day of camp full go.
