Here are the links to both apps: www.nohuddleremote.com/chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/hudl-multi-screen/jmlffnpibekcbkhffhhjjdakbenjclckI like using the Multi Screen for data entry so I can watch film on my TV with the big picture but if I need to look down for data-entry, D&D, ODK or whatever the film is on my screen too. They run at the same time synced so I don't have to be constantly looking up and down to see the play. Coupled with the No Huddle App on my iphone I can do everything the Hudl remote except for the laser pointer and the "tag" button. Ok, I just downloaded both and will check it out! When you connect the film to you tv is it down via cord or wireless? Are you just doing a split screen deal on your computer window? Looking at the basics on the app it times up two tabs and sinks everything up, but I’m having a hard time picturing how it will get used. Seems like it could save a lot of time though!
This worked great for me when I tested it. Then when I tried to actually use it, it was complaining about not being on the same wifi network (false). When I tried to use the other connection method, it worked for a few seconds before disconnecting. Have you ever run into that same issue?

What does your head coach have on his play sheet in addition to the offensive or defensive plays? Timeout tracker, clock charts, 2 pt charts, ref names, etc.?
Does anyone have one they can share?

We ran out of helmet stickers for our logo/mascot and are re-ordering. I'm not sure if they will arrive before game 1. Is it considered a uniform violation if there are players that do not have a logo sticker while others do? Where do you coach? CA

How do you guys clean your equipment in the offseason in preparation for the upcoming season? Specifically in years when you don't send off equipment for reconditioning.

For those that have removed static stretches, do any of you do neck stretches still in some fashion?

I like your list! There is some really good stuff to live by on that list. My only exception is the "fear" thing...if you mean it in the way it sounds. Fear and respect are not the same thing and too often mentioned in the same sentences. I 100% agree that people will go to great lengths for a person they respect....they will only go so far out of fear....even when the ultimate fear (death) is the potential consequence. Can you edit a post? I meant respect OR fear. And fear in the context of, if you dont do it like I said there will be consequnces. Like Up downs or being pulled off the field. Not fear as in I am going to beat your ass. This brings up a really good talking point. How do you get a player to do what he is supposed to if he doesnt respect you? And we all have had that at least once at some point. If he listens to you when you make him do up downs or tell him to get off the field, isn't that a form of respect in its own?

Anyone have a good recommendation on a brand/specific type of pinney that fits well over shoulder pads and can take the beating of football? Most of the ones I see online are branded towards soccer. I do like the ones that have the velcro straps on the side but I see durability issues.

We currently use the helmet beanies for scout team but they're kind of a pain in the ass to get to stay on the helmet. It also seems much more difficult to differentiate from the "regular" team with just the beanies. Do you guys use pinnies or beanies? And if you use pinnies, do you have any good recommendations? Can't decide which ones on Amazon to get.

Somewhat tangential but when we have competitions and subsequently punishments for the losing side, often we'll have guys from the winning side jump in and join the losers in the punishment. Usually it turns into everyone from the winning side joining as well. I'm not sure if I should be proud they're all in it together as a team or slightly bothered that the delineation between a winning and losing side has been blurred. I guess as long as the premise of competition is still there and they still care about winning even if it is just for pride, then I'll stick to the former.

Are bachelor's parties typically held at the same times as youth practices or games?
Or is OP's issue here travel (unstated)? Travel is the problem. Local events I'd show up after practice/games no question. The bachelor party that prompted this threat is planned for Mexico. I've already turned it down, for both football and financial reasons though it was much much easier to pin it on finances. One of the other bachelor parties I've been invited to is during Labor day weekend so I can travel after our game. I have many friends that are not quite as obsessed with football as I am or as a lot of this board is so they are not quite as understanding when I decline things for football reasons. I get a lot of "they're just 10 years old" which I usually choose to ignore rather than try to explain my side of things. While I would love to have everyone work their schedules around mine/football season, I've learned that my presence is not as important as I used to think it was. I'm an assistant/position coach, not a coordinator and as mentioned, I coach youth football. I've missed practices for work before and turns out the kids don't even notice/care I'm not there. If there are other people able to shoulder the responsibilities, I don't feel AS bad when I have to miss. It still kills me when I do, but at least I know they're in good hands with the rest of the staff in the unfortunate events I do have to miss.

How do you best balance your personal obligations with your coaching responsibilities? I have 3 pretty close friends getting married in late summer/fall and invitations to bachelor parties for all 3. Some I can potentially skip a Friday practice on a non-game week and go but some are during scheduled game days. How do you make the decision on which to prioritize in your life? Have you had any fallout from turning down weddings/bachelor parties because of football? I do have a fallback of expenses being a factor that could help cushion the blow.
If it changes your answer, I coach at the Pop Warner level. I don't have a kid and I do it purely for the love of the game. I'm attending clinics and studying up in the offseason and putting in the time to put myself in the best position to help these kids be put in the best position to succeed. They are 10-12 year olds but I still feel like I've made a commitment to coach and be there at practices/games but at the same time it's difficult saying no to good friends.

Just my unlearned opnion, but cheetahs that chase gazelles don't spend the previous 8 hours sedentary while crammed into desks, or on the couch playing Xbox, or eat from a drive through to the point they're an adolescent pre-diabetic. They're also somewhat active as a lifestyle cause wherever they go they have to walk their own ass there. Exactly. Ever seen your dog or cat wake up? First thing they do is stretch.

Jerry Campbell has made a career of speaking at clinics. Has playbooks for every scheme. Kinda shady to me... I'm not going to comment on the quality of his sessions since I was so out of it for the one I attended but he seemed like a coach who just wanted to share knowledge. He handed out his DVDs for free to all the coaches who toughed it out to the last session. There's like 7 or 8 powerpoints I have to wade through still, each like 150 slides long. There were plenty of coaches hawking their stuff at clinics. I mean Paul Alexander was great but even still it was "hey check out my book" scattered throughout. It's not like high school coaches are exactly paid millions... And I will say for Jerry Campbell he finished what he was supposed to talk about with 30 minutes or so left. He asked for questions, there were none, so he started just sharing various things. Coaching tips. Ran through some of his special teams briefly. Felt like he wanted to just be helpful overall to anyone who was there. Just throwing out another perspective.

Hm that's interesting. I found his X&Os portion to be very....lacking so I chose to not return for his other segments. His X&O's were awful (his 33 youth defense). but they were meant for 7 & 8 YO coaches. His other stuff was awesome. Okay we're on the same page. I almost got up and walked out when he was bragging about his defense and then followed it up with how 2 of his kids were now freshmen all-american studs with D1 scholarships. If you have those kind of kids you can run whatever the hell you want at the youth level and succeed.... I caught some other good stuff instead of his non-X&Os talk so not too disappointed but good to hear he wasn't completely full of it.

i really really really enjoyed the Chris Milton Youth Topics about leadership and starting a youth league from the ground up. having done that a few times now (or creating one from the ashes of another). it was pretty cool to listen to someone who had also done it. the more clinics i go to, the less "Football Specific" talks i go to. i try to find the guys who are talking about HOW TO COACH, rather then HOW TO X&O Hm that's interesting. I found his X&Os portion to be very....lacking so I chose to not return for his other segments.

I really liked the Azusa Pacific DC. Good speaker, very clear and specific. Every drill he showed, he also showed it showing up in a game. I really wanted to see Dan Pippin (Greenwood, SC) and James Vondra (Quartz Hill, CA) but got sidetracked. Did anybody get to see them? I saw Vondra for his game planning sessions. Nothing overly revolutionary but I did find it interesting the level of detail that went into his prep. I don't know how many other high school programs do this but he has his staff create entire scouting reports and hands them out to players. Film breakdown stuff aside from the level of detail was pretty basic (gathering trends, identifying top plays, etc.). He says his staff breaks down 3-6 games in 2 hours Saturday morning while he has his kids in a study hall.
Practice planning was scheduled out down to the minute with simulated halftimes. What I thought was cool was on Wednesdays he has his varsity practices shifted to a night practice and brings in a DJ for noise. Off the top of my head I can't remember anything else that really stood out.

I'll be there all weekend. Pretty excited for Paul Alexander and Tim Murphy. Any other good ones to see for sure?
I'll end up at the bar at some or multiple points during the weekend.

1. By football books, do you mean books about coaches (like Nick Saban/Urban Meyer/Lou Holtz/Pat Riley/whoever bios) or books by coaches or coaches choice or that sort of thing? Both have issues but they tend to be different issues. 2. For popular football books you tend to have the issue where you have people who know football being edited or even the book being written by a ghostwriter who doesn't really know the game. In a perfect world they would go over the book again and again until all that is sussed out but there is a lot of pressure from publishing houses to get these things out on schedule. 3. For coaching books it's really a matter of resources. As others have said coaches write them and their attention to that kind of detail is probably lacking, and the level of editorial support at the places that put out coaching books is minimal. This is because they don't sell a lot of copies -- even successful coaching books it's in the single digit thousands, most "successful" books in that genre are in the hundreds sold -- so you don't exactly have the New Yorker editorial staff. 4. To some extent it just happens. Buy any new book on the New York Times Bestseller list and there are probably typos and mistakes there. I have published two books and I'd like to think I'm literate and I had professional editors and there are definitely mistakes (I can tell you where they all are). It's painful and annoying but you're also trying to put the book down and get it out. One difference between hardcover books and paperbacks is the paperbacks tend to be edited to eliminate typos and mistakes. Those are excuses to some extent and it's true that some of it just comes down to laziness or lack of attention to detail, and there's a difference between having a typo or two (which is where I'd like to think my books land) than having errors that negatively affect the quality of the product either in terms of clarity or just distraction. Writing any kind of book is surprisingly difficult and unless you're writing the Da Vinci Code 2 it's not necessarily a great investment in terms of hourly wages, but if you're going to do anything and put your name on it you want to have some pride in it. Not that it really matters that much but I haven't seen any typos (or any ones that distract from the material) in your books for what it's worth. But some of the material that's out there....awful.

This is pretty awesome. Thanks. Is there a way to slow down the videos or do you just have to rewatch it over and over again if there's something in partciular you want to see in detail?

Hey all,
I'm trying to figure out how to learn to break down film. The biggest problem I have is trying to find source videos. I'm pretty fresh out of college and I'm not rolling in money so I can't utilize the NFL rewind package. I obviously don't have a big stash of film to trade either.
I've found some videos on youtube that cut out all the filler but it isn't from the all-22/end zone views. I think worst case I can start with that but the other issue with that is it's hard to slow down or get it back to the start of the play. Does anyone have any advice on how to either get my hands on some actual game tape or utilize these youtube videos?
Once I do start to watch film though, what's the best method to diagram plays? I've seen posts about hand drawing or using programs like Visio or Powerpoint. Of course, each coach has his own methods, but what do you use and why?
I think eventually I'd like to get into coaching but I'd like to be able to have more experience knowing what I'm looking at before I can go find a local school and try to volunteer some help.
