In some circumstances this is a lose lose situation. If you are hard on the kid you are bullying them and treating them poorly but on the flip side with the same kid if you are NOT hard on them then you are ignoring them and treating them poorly. I wish some of these parents would come out and watch and see how their children act and perform at practice. Honestly I think some of them would be astonished at the poor attitude and lack of effort by their sons.

I love these. I always give my offensive linemen a goal sheet on game day and they are full of these motivational and inspirational quotes. I can't believe nobody said the famous Lombardi quote though
"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious."

When the girls always joke and tell me they are going to try out I always point out that we do not hold tryouts, they are more than welcome to come out for the team, they are going to be treated the same as all of the other players, and I need to know for sure because they make shoulder pads for women.

I know a lot of our kids like the Schutt Air XP, they think its comfortable and you can use a traditional facemask with it.

That is a good point mrucoach. Some kids are who quit really do not want to quit. We have a student who will be a senior next season who is unfortunately quitting football. Would he have ever been a starter? Probably not but he was a great kid and a good scout team player. He is being forced to quit because he is also a wrestler and a 4.0 student heading to college and eventually medical school(his plan anyways) so his mother said football or wrestling, wrestling is his better sport so I cant be too mad at him.

Our "open gyms" are run by coaches and are essentially practices.

I actually still do play, semi-pro (I played 4 years of D3 too), and by the time our semi-pro season starts, I am so burnt out from playing that I find coaching a great reward. We had another coach on staff who used to play semi-pro and he would always try to liken HS football to semi-pro and tell the kids plays and techniques that he THOUGHT would work. I found this pretty ignorant of him and I never talk about my semi-pro career with the HS kids at all.

Football weightlifting is actually weightlifting. I saw our basketball team "lift" last night in the weight room. It involved poor dumbbell curls and some pullups, pretty pathetic. It's a shame too because we have some kids on our barely win 10 games basketball team who could seriously help our been to the playoffs 4 years in a row football team.

Well it still concerns me though. I know in this sport we can not make everybody happy but I still want the respect of my players and their parents. Want everybody to love you? Here's how- drop dead right there on the field. There'll be feature stories on TV and in the paper, women will cry (even the second team QB's mom), and the team will wear your initials on their helmet. Maybe they'll even name the stadium after you. You'll be a freakin saint in the town. If you prefer not to do that (and it's not the road I'd take, personally) you just have to deal with the fact that some people aren't going to like the way you do business. Potayto, potahto. Hahaha, no thanks, I'll stick to breathing. Thanks though

That is the thing though, I always watch what I say or how I act, especially in front of the kids.
Coachcb, I understand what you are saying. Our new coach also did point out that of all the other coaches from last year, he wanted me to stay on the most, so that was nice for the old ego.
It was more of him letting me know that he had been approached about it, but it still caught me off guard.

Let me ask you guys something. I recently had an interview with our new head coach at school and he told me that he had some concerns with my being too negative. This caught me completely off guard because I feel that I am never negative and always try to put a positive spin on everything.
Should I just go about doing things the way I have or make an effort to be over positive?

You play the best 11 regardless of age. I know for a fact that I will probably have a sophomore on the offensive line this season and there could be several that see time on the defensive line. They are simply the better players and deserve to play.

I hate the "you have to get him out" kids because only 1/10 ends up working out. We have so many kids walking through our hallways who "can be good" but will never "work" to be good.
On the flip side our senior class from 2 years ago had a VERY rough sophomore season. The 3 best sophomore players started varsity so the JV suffered and only had 8 guys and then the rest were freshman. They managed to win 2 games but the freshman got good reps and time up. Those seniors went 9-3 during the 2010 season and really turned the program around.

Its just frustrating that the parents send these kids to school for discipline but when we discipline their kids we are bullying them now. WTF!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Oh these guys are all being outworked and I KNOW will be out hustled. We have kids who will bust their butts and will take playing time away from the others because they EXPECT to play and the worst part is that they are my kids, Offensive Linemen, who are some of the worst culprits. I will play 2 seniors and 3 sophomores if those are the ones who work the hardest and give me 100% if I have to. I have no problem with that and I have done it before.
One of the other problems is that we have had coaches in the past who have gone out and said that the weightroom is not important (freshman coaches) so these kids believe that and parents believe that. If I went to them and told them that their kids were being outworked and outlifted their responses would be "Football games arent won in the weight room, they are won on the field" and if I then told those parents that their kids were being outworked on the field too then I would be the jerk who was picking on their kid and had it out for them. Its a lose lose sometimes with certain kids. The worst part of this whole situation is that the kids do have talent they are just choosing to be knuckleheads about it.
The part that irks me the most is the blatant disrespect we are getting. Part of the problem is that we are in the midst of hiring a new head coach at our school (He has been hired, just isnt here yet) so I know that when he comes in and gives these guys workouts they are going to not do those either.
Sorry for the rant guys. I appreciate the words you have given me so far and the ideas youve thrown out.

The latest is that the kids who arent coming down are being "picked on" by myself and treated unfairly. I just sat down with the A.D. about it. What a damn joke. Makes me wonder if I really need all this aggravation and crap in my life.

I also dont want to have to beg kids to workout. I just stopped a kid in the hallway about 10 minutes ago. He was our JV tailback last year and could steal some carries on varsity this upcoming season. He also plays basketball (which he bitches about constantly and always told me he wanted to quit). Basketball season is over so what does he do? Skips the workouts and goes to "open gym" Its a freaking joke. When I told him not to complain if he doesnt get the playing time he expects his response was "Ok I wont"

We have a recent problem at the school I coach where kids all leave and go "lift" at the YMCA instead of with their teammates in the hs weightroom. I am not really sure how to handle this without getting upset and losing my cool.

We have quite a few that play other sports. We encourage them to play other sports but unfortunately some of the other coaches do NOT encourage athletes to play football. They are more worried about summer basketball and tell them that if they do not come to those sessions that they will not be welcomed during the winter. Really frustrating because we have lost great football players because of this.

When it all clicks for the kid/kids and they finally get it. They understand their job, their assignment, their role and they do it to the best of their ability and make their teamates better while doing it.
Also the Friday night lights. Nothing in the world in sports beats that.
