Are there any quotes that any of you really base your coaching philosophy off of, are really meaningful to yourself, or are just plain good quotes that you guys use for inspiring your team or staff?
A while ago I found one that governs my coaching philosophy and my life in general:
"How you do anything is how you do everything" -Lou Holtz

Watching nfl network last night john mckay back in his hay day tells reporters "we are on a five year plan, mainly because my contract is for five years." I like it.

Only passion, great passion can elevate this team to greatness. Nothing great in the world has been accomplished without passion. Football is a game of passion. You must have a passion for victory!!

A player asked me, "What is passion?"
Passion - a disturbance in your heart that says, "I want, I want, I want!!!"

i could go for awhile on these. This is gonna be a good thread.
some of my favorites-
Mack Brown- “You don't belong in a game like this if you don't feel good about yourself and walk with a swagger. If you think you can be stopped, this isn't the place for you.”
Muhammad Ali- "Last night I had a dream, When I got to Africa, I had one hell of a rumble. I had to beat Tarzan’s behind first, For claiming to be King of the Jungle. For this fight, I’ve wrestled with alligators, I’ve tussled with a whale. I done handcuffed lightning And throw thunder in jail. You know I’m bad. just last week, I murdered a rock, Injured a stone, Hospitalized a brick. I’m so mean, I make medicine sick. I’m so fast, man, I can run through a hurricane and don't get wet. When George Foreman meets me, He’ll pay his debt. I can drown the drink of water, and kill a dead tree. Wait till you see Muhammad Ali. " "I know you got him picked, I know you do. But all of you chumps are gonna bow when I whup him! All of ya! Ima show you how great I am!"
Booker T Washington- "Associate yourself with people of good quality, for it is better to be alone than in bad company." "Character, not circumstances, makes the man." "Excellence is to do a common thing in an uncommon way." "Few things can help an individual more than to place responsibility on him, and to let him know that you trust him."
Doug Williams- "The only pressure on a man is the pressure that he puts on himself". Love that one pregame.

One that really got me as far as my philosophy was a conversation I had with a at camp where there were 2 wing-t teams a I team and the other 14 were spread. " I don't know coach you get beat by one of these teams and you get on the bus go home shower and a hour later there out holding hands with there girlfriends. Now being a.smash mouth power running football team is sort of like that inglourus basterds movie it leaves them with something there not gonna take off when they go home if you know.what I mean" kind of twisted but I love it.
As far as known coaches Alex Gibbs needs a.book. ("we might not win the 1 on 1 but we better win the {censored} 2 on one" " if you tackel my back I'm gonna cut your ass" " if a center can't handel a shade by himself he's a {censored}" And the bill cowher stuff about winning ugly and just doing what we do

"The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the name on the back."-Joe Paterno I love this one, but I love it even more for Todd Blackledge's comment at Joe's memorial service; "I always thought that was odd because we never had a name on the front either."

Two British soccer manager quotes that always crack me up.
Ally MacLeod (Scotland national manager) when asked what his plans were for after the 1978 World Cup; "Retain it"
Brian Clough (Nottingham Forest manager); "I wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one."

Pick one! www.vincelombardi.com/quotes.htmlWhat It Takes to be Number One "Winning is not a sometime thing; it's an all the time thing. You don't win once in a while; you don't do things right once in a while; you do them right all of the time. Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing. There is no room for second place. There is only one place in my game, and that's first place. I have finished second twice in my time at Green Bay, and I don't ever want to finish second again. There is a second place bowl game, but it is a game for losers played by losers. It is and always has been an American zeal to be first in anything we do, and to win, and to win, and to win. Every time a football player goes to ply his trade he's got to play from the ground up - from the soles of his feet right up to his head. Every inch of him has to play. Some guys play with their heads. That's O.K. You've got to be smart to be number one in any business. But more importantly, you've got to play with your heart, with every fiber of your body. If you're lucky enough to find a guy with a lot of head and a lot of heart, he's never going to come off the field second. Running a football team is no different than running any other kind of organization - an army, a political party or a business. The principles are the same. The object is to win - to beat the other guy. Maybe that sounds hard or cruel. I don't think it is. It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there - to compete. The object is to win fairly, squarely, by the rules - but to win. And in truth, I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat. I don't say these things because I believe in the ‘brute' nature of men or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour -- his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear -- is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious." - Coach Vincent T. Lombardi

Generally I don't need quotes to guide me, I go by a core set of principles and by what I've learned along the way. Having 4 children helps when dealing with young people.
What I tell my team is the following:
To new players in the program "You don't get a second chance to make a first impression."
When we start practice in the fall I use: "A journey of 1000 miles begins with a single step."
When kids think they know enough to berate teammates for mistakes I tell them: "Just take care of you...that's a full time job!"
When my own kids were young and complained about the food at home I told them: "This isn't s restaurant, its a mess hall." (Added that one for yucks!)
If anything sums up our program its: Good, Better, Best Never let it rest, Until the Good is Better And the Better Best
Also heard a great on by Colin Cowherd the other day that has meaning to me: "Write your life's outline in pencil, not pen."
How many of us does that apply to??

"Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose" - Eric Taylor
I know, I know. It's from a TV show and Eric Taylor is a fictional coach. I just love the saying.
I also like "Play Hard. Play Smart. Play TOGETHER." Not sure where I heard that one.

if you follow me on twitter, you obviously know i'm huge on sayings & "thoughts for the day" ... we put them all over the place, on the workouts that are posted, on bulletin boards, on posters .... we pick several each year to 'hang our hat on' as they serve as themes.
"those that will have fruit must climb the tree" "the time to dig the well is before you get thirsty" "embrace the process" etc., etc.
win the day is something we've had for such a long time... started out way back in mid 90's as "start fast, stay focused, get a win today"... then was broken into "fast, focus, finish -- win the day"

I love these. I always give my offensive linemen a goal sheet on game day and they are full of these motivational and inspirational quotes. I can't believe nobody said the famous Lombardi quote though
"I firmly believe that any man's finest hour, the greatest fulfillment of all that he holds dear, is that moment when he has worked his heart out in a good cause and lies exhausted on the field of battle - victorious."

I love using motivational quotes...
My favorite and the one that sticks in most kids' minds is...
"Nothing worth having comes easy."
I don't know where it originates from or where I got it from, but it's one of my favorites.
