Gotta share this because at my school in my city and I am sure in cities and schools like mine...this is the norm! So Saturday I am at a local establishment watching my beloved Fighting Irish get destroyed by The U...and I have decided to leave. As I am walking out a lady says "Hey Coach...how you feel about "HC name" disrespecting the OL" I stop and say...I dont know what she means. She brings up a comment made during the banquet that our HC made while talking about our senior TB. I said to her "I am 100% sure he did not intend to disrespect the OL" I try to walk away and she goes "Well you know "her son" was highly offended and he is ready to transfer...and he is taking 5 or 6 kids with him" My reply is "Ma'am I can only coach who is there in August, if your son leaves tell him Coach Raines said good luck and to make sure he works hard" I am pretty sure there will be a few more parent interactions like this but...her son refused to play OL and when he got in a varsity game faked a knee injury the first play he was in. Why would he be offended by ANYTHING said about a unit he refused to help when he was more than capable. But of course I cant tell mom that! lol! Thanks for reading the mini-rant!!!! This is why I do all my drinking at home.

Meaningless unless you shoot fireworks off while running though it. Smoke. Lots of smoke... Smoke and fireworks won't help against a team waving multiple flags. You can't properly 'merica with at least a dozen flags.

Coach, it sounds like you are in a situation where you need to change the culture of your program. Read Randy Jackson's book and then find a job at another school. As much as I'm probably feeding a troll here, what is your deal with Randy Jackson?

I don't have any real knowledge on the situation, but I believe I found another article which said the coaches issued a written apology that wasn't really an apology at all. Made light of the entire situation and refused to admit any wrongdoing. The other teams on the schedule refused to play unless the coaches resigned.

This is why I love the way we run 7on7. Each team gets 20 plays from the 40 and 5 plays from the 10. No score, no moving chains, no trophies. Everyone just works on their own stuff.

well to pick nits we were perfectly okay with the concept of paying taxes. what we didn't appreciate was the lack of voice in the say so of the how, when, in why taxes were levied. if by spoiled you mean that the Americans were thriving because of self governance and individualism, then yeah we were really spoiled. True on most levels.... Although the argument can be made that even if the British would have extended parliamentary representation the rabble rousing merchants of Massachusetts still would not have been happy. Of all the political arguments we could have, the Revolutionary War is not the one I was expecting.

I've been curious about these twitter chats I've been hearing about, so tonight I created a football coaching specific twitter account. Who should I follow, and what chats should I be looking for?

I was a D3 player myself, so I know all the positives and negatives that go into that decision. We once had a local guy help coach who was an FBS player and had played a few years in the league. I still remember the following conversation:
Him: How many of you guys are on scholarship? Us: ....none of us Him: So you guys get your books paid for or something? Us:...no Him: So what the hell are you doing here?

We seem to be the only team with the opposite problem. We haven't had anyone with a chance to play above D3 since I've been here, but we've had a lot of kids who would be very good D3 players who just choose not to play in college at all. Anyone else have experience where your best players don't seem to want to go on to the next level?

The more I hear from all of you the more I really feel that its going to take someone in our community that really cares about our school and the kids to turn this program around. Now that may have to happen in one of a few different ways or it may take more then just one. I have been listening and taking notes on everything you all have been saying, well minus the walk away/move/take your kids to a different school/its never going to change commits that is. So I now have some questions to start asking and we will see what happens. You're not hearing a word that anyone is saying. It's not going to take someone from the community who really cares. It's going to take a school board and administration that really cares. Until these people make athletics a priority, the situation isn't going to change.

I've read this entire thread and the question I still have is why hasn't there been a teaching opening in the past 12 years? I understand you may not have a teaching position to offer for a coach right now, but it seems this has been an ongoing problem. Doesn't anyone every retire/move/get fired? What do your PE/Drivers Ed. teachers do?

We have had 4 different Head Coaches over the past 8 years, which ran what they wanted. That said two different coaches tried running the spread and it just doesn't work for us. Another tried running the power I and well we don't have the lineman for it. For our school some offenses just don't work. There for, I would like a Head Coach that is more on the same page as we are. Not saying other offenses can't do well with the right program/kids. The last good coach/team ( over 12 years ago) we had ran the Wing-T. We went to the playoffs 4 different years. So we know the Wing-T fits our school and kids. We are done getting coaches to come here that just want to experiment with our kids and program. Is there a CoachHuey Hall of Fame? If not, we need to create one just for this post.

I hate when they don't include a speaking schedule. Do you have any idea what some of the topics will be?

Why doesn't every high draft prospect do it? Because they're given bad advice?

Couple thoughts... First, for those of you saying a bowl game is meaningless I question where our perception of sports has gone. I never played in a meaningless game and I've never coached in a meaningless game. Just because a game has no implication for playoffs or no other perceived reward it is meaningless? Sorry guys, I'm not following that logic. Second, I'll give you a somewhat comparable HS scenario that happened years ago and see how this sits with you all. We lost a close week 7 game which put us out of the playoffs. So we were playing two "meaningless" games. Two of our better players quit so they wouldn't get hurt before wrestling season. Both were great wrestlers who had legitimate shots at State and chances to wrestle in college (one wrestled at a big D1 school). You support their decision as a HS coach? The issue is that, right or wrong, this really doesn't have anything to do with sports. When you introduce millions of dollars into the equation, it becomes a business. These men made a business decision. If I had a son that had a full division 1 scholarship in hand, I would not want him to risk that scholarship playing another sport.

So would it also be acceptable for major players to sit out early season non-conference games? If I play at a power 5 school and am a first-round draft pick, is drubbing a team from the SunBelt by 40 points going to help my draft status? Maybe players should opt out of those games too.
P.S. My apologies to anyone who might be affiliated with the SunBelt Conference.

1) 425 2) Split coverage 3) Navy option offense 4) incorporating RPO's into a flexbone offense Coach, what are you looking for on Navy option? I actually coached with a guy who coached at Navy. While I'm not an expert at his level, there are probably some topics in there that I could speak on pretty well. As a flexbone option coach, I would take as much flexbone information as I could get.

I only know of two easy options....mailing list or make a google classroom for the thing Google Classroom isn't a bad idea. If I am hosting them it looks like once you guys have the link it doesn't ever change which does make it easier. Mailing list would work too, since once you guys have the link you have it. I might also do a Google doc for guys wanting to attend (would get an idea on expected number) and then I can just put the link on there. Wouldn't we all need email addresses from the same GAFE school to be in a Google Classroom together?

Our staff is looking to institute a points-based leadership and character rewards system during the upcoming offseason. We have some ideas about how we would like to put the program together and run it, but I would like some suggestions on starting a program like this. What are some things you've done that have worked well, or what are some things that were miserable failures? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Varna notched the season's first win this past Friday night over Rockford (Christian Life) 42-40. Christian Life, which has had to forfeit 3 games this year, remains winless. Hats off to Timberwolves Nation...I'll bet it was one heck of party! Not to nitpick, but it's Falcon Nation!

So one of our assistant coaches has started wearing long sleeves to practice claiming that keeping the sun off his skin keeps him cooler. I'm calling bull. Do long sleeves really keep you cooler?

I have a pair of Boombah's that aren't waterproof, but are mostly leather. They keep my feet mostly dry in the dew and warm in late fall. Now I look and Boombah's website hardly has any shoes. Anyone know what happened to Boombah?

I find value in 7 on 7 so for categorization purposes that's where I am. BUT one team I played a few years ago played 3 deep 4 under man. We hit our FB in the flat over and over to move the chains but, really? Another team insisted on having 8 guys on the field and blitzing one of them right into our qb's face and trying to block passes and on a 3rd down decided to drop all 8 of them. That game didn't last long. Woof. I understand blitzing and having him banana out the way but to get in the QBs face in 7on7 is pretty stupid. I signed up for my first 7on7 tournament since summer of 2012. We won more 7on7 games that summer than real ones. We run a 3-5, so we always have 8 on the field in 7-on-7. One always takes a knee at the snap to simulate a blitzer. I wouldn't imagine running a guy at a QB with no protection in front of him.

I'm all for showing kids that you care, but texting them on the weekend asking how the weekend went is just asking for trouble.
