Illinois high school football. Varna (Midland), a co-op program between 3 schools, lost a game this past weekend to Hope Academy (Chicago) by a score of 91-0. The score at the end of the 1st qt was 49-0 and had expanded to 85-0 by halftime. Additionally, Varna lost their second game 62-0. The season opener was a 47-0 loss.
So, Varna is currently 0-3, having been outscored 200-0 through those 3 games.
Does anyone with knowledge of the situation at Varna have any insights to what is going on there?

Maybe they need to just spend the season running jamborees against junior high teams....

Interesting that they would stick it to him.
Could be a sign that the head coach is pissing off someone if they all keep throwing crazy numbers on the guy. Everyone has their 3rd and 4th string guys to put out there, plus he could have asked for a running clock...

Current HFC is in his 3rd season. I just can't fathom how bad things have to be that you are losing games by such a huge margin.

There was a team that got beat 90 something to nothing awhile ago around here and was about as bad as this team. The coach was a moron. I know him. Had no clue. Was a great player but couldn't coach to save his life. At some point it's on the bad team to keep the score down too. The 90-0 game here the bad team was still throwing and getting picked off for td's like they were trying to come back by throwing the ball just dumb coaching. Going 3 and out in like 20 seconds. Was insane.
Bad teams can be made epically bad by a horrible coach.

What kind of numbers and talent do they have? I have seen several of these programs across several states who start a program or are just trying to field a team and compete at the varsity level. They should probably be playing a JV schedule to develop the kids and program. Won't have a team very long with outcomes like this.

We had a team in our area last year, 1 division down from where I coach, get outscored 510-6 on the season last year in 11 games. They used to be competitive but were never really good. Anyway, as far as I know they changed coaches a couple times (not sure what lead to the changes), and ended up hiring the school janitor to be the HC last year (no shot at janitors, or custodians). They changed coaches in the off season, they are currently 0-3 and have been outscored 109-22.

I think they have the biggest enrollment in the conference. But I don't know how many players they have. I'm assuming not enough.

Used to be in the same conference as me. They made the playoffs 3 or 4 years ago because of 3 very athletic kids, but they've just never had big football numbers (maybe 25 when they made the playoffs). And last 2 seasons they have had to forefit multiple games because they didn't have enough kids.
Because of this they were basically kicked out of 2 different conferences. From what I've heard the super intenant and school board are not supporting the coach at all and are basically doing everything they can to cut football and start a soccer program.

If they play all 9 games of their schedule its a win. Couple years back, they could only get enough health kids to play every other week. They probably need to play just freshman and JV for a couple years to maybe develop some kids.

It can snowball quickly. Here is how it went: KOR to 50. 3mins later- TD us/2pt good Onside kick- recovered 2 plays- TD us/2pt good Onside kick- recovered next play - TD us/2pt good KO - they get ball at 30 Next play pick six/2pt good KO deep defense causes fumble on 3rd down- we recover next play- TD/2pt good. End of 1st Q We agreed to run the clock in the 2nd quarter as per request of other team. Starters out at half time up 48-0.

Varna finally put some points on the board today. Looks like they were able to score a TD and apparently kicked a field goal. Unfortunately, the team they played (0-9 a year ago) scored 56.
But that's ok...baby steps! As it was a home game for Varna, I wonder if the fans (fan?) stormed the field and tried to tear down the goalposts. Enjoy those 10 points, Falcon Nation! You have already surpassed the total points scored in all of 2015!

Varna notched the season's first win this past Friday night over Rockford (Christian Life) 42-40. Christian Life, which has had to forfeit 3 games this year, remains winless.
Hats off to Timberwolves Nation...I'll bet it was one heck of party!

Hats off to Timberwolves Nation...I'll bet it was one heck of party! Not to nitpick, but it's Falcon Nation! Yes...I saw that. But some other websites are calling the team the Timberwolves. I'm assuming that "Falcons" is a football-only mascot and that "Timberwolves" must be the mascot of one of the three schools that makes up the co-op? Also, doing a little more research on the situation, it appears that the game Varna won this past week was played under 8-man rules. Apparently the team they beat (Rockford Christian) only has 14 players on the team, a couple of which are also full-time members of the soccer team. It looks like what they do is forfeit the game outright and then they play a scrimmage game under 8-man rules. Under IHSA (the state high school athletic governing body) rules, I'm not sure if Varna's big win goes down as an actual game or as a forfeit win because Illinois does not have an 8-man division. Regardless, I'm sure the kids don't care what the official record says. At the point Varna is at, any win is a good win!

It's gotta be the coach's fault... micro manage his practices, pull players in behind his back, fire him mid-season, you gotta do something!
Oh wait, do they have an established weight program, numbers, talent, any type of tradition? probably not.

My buddy is dealing with a very similar situation (scoring wise) in his first year. The reason? If I combined the worst player/parent/legal stories I've heard over my 10 years in/around coaching, they still wouldn't equal 1/10th of what he's had to deal with in this single season.
Sometimes when you buy apples and get a few rotten ones. In my friend's situation, he got a bag full of cockroach infested apples that are simultaneously being devoured by scorpions.
Lesson: Don't judge a coach too harshly, you never know what's going on behind the scenes.

Varna gets a win, Lincoln, IL get a win breaking their 33 game losing streak. Just proving not all games can be won but that any game can be lost.
