If you didn't have either one - would you buy a blaster or a sled. We have a four man sled with the low dummies - but you can't really drive it -- more for d-line fireouts. also have a wooden sled that we sometimes use for conditioning - but not really for firing out and hitting. Lets see, other equipment - a good chute set up. have a one man sled. Now, would you buy a good sled or would you buy a blaster -- or none of the above ?!?!? blasters - what type are the best -- had the old smitty blaster decades ago -- what is the best now?

I like the Rogers LEV Sled (2 man) and the Gilman 1 man Tackle sled. We also have a Rogers Gauntlet model with the hanging dummy but the other 2 get used much more frequently. The Blaster??? Now that is really old school!

Old School!?! also used the tires as a blaster --- before we got smart and drilled holes in the bottom the water would collect and the wasps would come. THAT did get the backs running through them pretty quick. The tires pretty much shredded the practice jerseys. And we had one kid get stuck that may still be out there.
I think I would use the guantlet everyday - but my line coaches insist they would rather have a sled. I don't really like sleds except for conditioning...

I would go with the sled.... Many positions can use it for many drills....

Ok, this is my 1/2 cent.
The only thing a sled is good for is conditioning and maybe a fire out drill. Those shifty guys playing defense tend to move around so the sled does nothing for that case. Get yourself a wood conditioning sled. Great piece of equipment and since it is a "conditioning" sled you don't have to worry about those ilegal practice issues.
You can get the fire out drill just like the wing-t guys with having one kid hold up a round dummy while the other fires out. As far as the movement nothing simulates it better than a "fit and drive drill". We will do that drill for 50-100 yards. Sounds crazy but 400 yards 3xweek will do wonders.
Now, my pick would be the BLASTER:) Why? If you have ever seen how that thing makes so-so runners into "THE KID NOBODY CAN TACKLE" then you get the idea. Love to see 3-4-5 guys, and sometimes more, trying to bring down one of these kids.
Anyways, three pieces of equipment that are a must to me are the chute, conditioning sled, and blaster.

Rogers Lev Sled 5 man
Hands down.
Blaster (Gauntlet) is great by you can mimic with LB shields and real people.

We have all of teh above and nothing is better than the Crowther Z sled. Oline lives on it and you can tackle it. Makes you keep balanced or it turns and you can't hit it high. If they made it in a LEV sled , it would be the ultimate.

It comes down to this. What system do you use and what techniques do you teach? We use a system and techniques in which the 5 man sled is our primary teaching tool. In fact we don't use anything else other than some boards and chutes. But others would never use a sled. Don't know how to use one, or don't use techniques that need to be worked on one. So you need to evaluate your system and then buy equipment that will enhance your system.

Thanks for the comments -- I prefer live blocking after you have taught fundamentals that's why i don't like the sled. As for the blaster/gauntlet - i know you can simulate that with the two line gauntlet drill but its not quite the same. still haven't decided what to do...

OK, I'll help out - buy the gauntlet! You'll use it everyday -- all your players become proficient at carrying the ball. Previous staff bought a nice sled -- after summer camps we don't even pad it up.
