I have a few football coaching friends up in AK. Boy are they lucky.
This weekend was week 1 of their season. While most of us are trugging through doubles and getting ready, they got into their shinys this weekend and teed it up.
Jealousy reigns supreme!

I coach in Alaska, we arn't so lucky in late sep early Oct when its freezing! Alaskan football seems different than the states. Most schools don't have lights so its Sat games instead of Fri night lights.

Yeah lucky them.....playing in minus degree weather, 24 hours of nighttime, way too much snow for even me to handle(we get like 100+ in. a year), and I am sure it is real cheap to live up there. LOL yeah lucky them Speaking of there was a clinic here in town for wing-t coaches and there was a guy who came from Alaska to PA jsut for the clinic. If not one thing they are dedicatred to the sport up there!

and I think its still true if you win one game you're in the state's top twenty! (used to be only 21 teams). I flat out couldn't handle the cold!!!

I have to give them credit for even having football way up north. I am from the upper midwest and I think it is cold here at times when we play in late oct and nov.
I can only imagine what it is like up in alaska.
as I say, h.s. football in the midwest is the only sport I know were you start out in shorts/t shirts/water breaks and endup wearing long johns, parkas and snow boots to stay warm on the sidelines.

This week is the first football game ever above the arctic circle. Barrow Alaska takes on Delta Junction. Barrow is the northern most city I think in the world. Google it and look where it is on the map. They have a polar bear watch tower at their stadium because they have been known to wander on by. I think ESPN is doing something on it. Its going to be a terrible quality of game. Delta is a second year program in the boon docks of alaska and Barrow is a first year program. But its still good that they have a team and are building.

Maybe the first with for american teams above the arctic circle, but here in Finland we have a team that is just above the arctic circle in Rovaniemi, the hometown of Santa Claus;) There was also at least one team in Sweden last year that was even farther north... Its a hell of a trip for us (11-15 hours) but we went up there and won 34-8 last year. When they come down south to play teams in our area they usually have to play two games in one weekend to save on travel costs.
