Our kids use the elastic slip-on spats over their cleats. obviously these spats provide zero ankle support, and im sure most of them wear them to look cool. however, our trainer did say that they are functional for two reasons... they do secure the shoelaces to prevent them from coming untied during the game. And we play on field turf, with 1.9 gazillion of those tiny litle rubber pellets per square inch. at the end of a practice or game, i literally pour them out of each of my shoes. the elastic spats the kids wear actually do prevent those little pellets from getting into the shoe. they cost about $20 and come in many colors. im neutral on the issue.... if the kids want to wear them, fine. I told them these are fine I'm all for look good feel good play good Trust me I'm the flashiest coach you'll ever see on the sideline But the tape spats were wasting so much time it was effecting our games

No The kids with ankle issues get taped or wear a brace

a spat is borderline useless
it was invented as quick remedy for a slight ankle sprain where you need to get the kid back on the field ASAP it is the equivalent of a spare tire
it has become something purely for looks here, we waste a ton of tape, kids put themselves late for warm ups and pre game because they wait too long to get taped or tapers get backed up... that's why I made it illegal for our kids now
if they have a legitimate ankle concern or history, they can get a standard ankle top job

I made it a rule this year in our team rule packet
No spats are allowed

We don't even do then anymore
We have been practicing 5 days a week since school got out Multiple passing tourneys 3 day live team camp vs 7 other schools
We don't need double days, double days are essentially a cram session the night before the final

I'm pretty sure they do custom stickers and could probably make them for you if you gave them a picture of what you wanted

going through this now with a sophomore stud, played 2 varsity games as a freshman last year (which you ALMOST never see here)
he is a stud LB... legitimately a Division 1 LB if he keeps grades up and qualifies
he was playing TE before camp... our OL struggled at camp, moved him to LG... stud
he doesnt want to play, now his parents are saying he can't play both ways, hell get hurt and so on (didnt say a word when he played TE)
we tried to stay polite and explain how good he is, how much better our offense is with him in... talked to them about he will still get recruited at LB, play every snap at LB, and just play offense every 50%-75% of the snaps
ideally every other series on offense
it is going to be a battle this year, and probably every other year
he is a very good TE, but right now we have a greater need at LG than TE

I might get banned for this, but I love soccer. Almost as much as football...almost. That said, this bit was hilarious, especially the "how many countries are in this country?" line. Blasphemy

I think that is best because it increases how well you can hold kids accountable during the school day and for attendance
off campus coaches don't see the kids from 8-3... on campus ones do
a lot of the time in a big program, the varsity coaches don't know all of the JV and frosh kids very well if at all... i think it helps having that connection with them and keeping them doing the right things
it also helps having teachers at each level to check on grades, communicate with other teachers about how kids are behaving, and having available classrooms for meetings/film
We are in a fortunate situation with a perfectly even spread we have 3 total on campus coaches counting myself we make up the entire Male PE department
Myself (varsity assistant HC/OC) JV HC Freshman HC
having the assistant HC title lets me kind of run things, handle admin stuff, paperwork, phone calls, etc from 8-3
so we essentially get a HC at each level on campus, all in the same department where we get to teach/talk with each other all day

Call as many good programs as you can Ask if you can just watch them practice Some will say no but a few will be open to it
The most I've learned in one day was watching a very good local HS practice
Just to see How they do what they do

we say do what you want
we had a team mom dealing with cancer (not breast) issues
almost every kid sports pink socks or tape
a few go crazy and get pink gloves, mouthpiece, towel, everything
if refs don't mind it, i dont

I've never understood the we all have to wear black shoes thing
I hate are visors... not so much if it is dry, but if there is any moisture in the air, or on the ground... they get cloudy and kids cant see out of them... then you have a starter scrambling to take his visor off with a screw driver between series or between quarters
Spats also piss me off, forgot to say this in my first post... not because of the look, but because we waste so much time trying to get the kids spatted before game time i told all of our kids no one is allowed to get spatted this year, i told the trainers there are to be no spats this year

Our QB spot played at FS and SS last year
It wasnt the pounding that we were so much worried about, strong tough kid... It was just the more tired out he got on defense it hurt us on O He was a running Qb and our best pass plays were sprint out The offense thrived on him running a lot

I've used phone and iPad for Indy stuff with OL and inside run I think it works well and prefer my phone because I can have it in my pocket and pull it out whenever
Now if the goal is showing the kids during practice time then an iPad is better because of the larger screen of course

Too many young coaches today have the mind set that they played the game they know how to coach it. They don't understand that you need to teach it "coaching" is a term we don't use where I am at. Young guys need to pay their dues before they are given any responsibilities. If it is an issue with this guy then he will DQ himself before long. You are making the right move. Let him hold cards (scout team) set up drills and learn from the other coaches how he needs to do things. If that doesn't work for him then he can move on. You know when a young guy is the real deal he uses his ears way more than his mouth and tries to stay one step ahead of you to make your job easier. Thats a guy you can work with. Yeah!! I long for the glory days that never were but always will be when everyone who put on a whistle knew their role, payed their dues, worked hard from day one, and never needed direction. Back in the days when coaches were coaches, men were men, players did exactly as you said, and parents and administrators stayed out of your way. Make no mistake, this guy sounds like a clown an probably wont cut it but the generalization of young coaches "these days" or even just "young coaches" is about as foolish as any other out there. I've seen my fair share of blowhard old hats who are coaches in title only, a bad coach is a bad coach regardless of age the worked in or age they are. I believe you'd find as many boneheaded coaches "back then" as you do now. the disease known as "BadCoachitis" doesn't discriminate based on age, race, gender, or any other characteristic.. it plagues thousands every year

Funny cause I did. And he responded "I don't know" says a lot right? I dont know as in " I dont know how to teach that or what you want me to teach"... could be that he doesn't it himself so he doesn't feel comfortable teaching it... or it could be I dont know as in " I don't know how I didn't go over it in Indy, I guess I lost track of time" gotta hate those young coaches

sit him down
ask him if he wants to be their coach or their friend?
if he even hesitates so good bye
if he wants to coach then keep working to teach him

it happens
we took a week off for finals after spring ball and last week was a little rusty, they'll get back in to it soon enough
is the dead month you have before camp a state mandatory thing? or are you guys choosing to give them that time off?

vacation is fine missing for baseball is not ... football is in fall, baseball is in spring And, your idea of "fall" starting is June as soon as school gets out? No It's just the fall is the next season of sport Baseball players at our school typically do all this summer work and fall ball Then do nothing all winter Then try to jump back to it in spring season To me taking grounders in June isn't gonna help you a whole lot the following march
