Pretty straightforward question to all you headers out there: Do you make any kind of conscious effort to distribute your on-campus coaches throughout your program? Say there's you, a PE guy, a SS guy, and an English guy on campus and everyone is a varsity level coach (dedicated, professional, head is outside their rectum, etc), would you try to spread the on-campus wealth while filling in the rest of the positions with volunteers?
I realize that in some states this isn't possible because of limitations on # of volunteer coaches, but in CA at least most programs depend on them to fill out the majority of the staff.
Found myself wondering this while working out today, look forward to hearing folks' thoughts.

I think that is best because it increases how well you can hold kids accountable during the school day and for attendance
off campus coaches don't see the kids from 8-3... on campus ones do
a lot of the time in a big program, the varsity coaches don't know all of the JV and frosh kids very well if at all... i think it helps having that connection with them and keeping them doing the right things
it also helps having teachers at each level to check on grades, communicate with other teachers about how kids are behaving, and having available classrooms for meetings/film
We are in a fortunate situation with a perfectly even spread we have 3 total on campus coaches counting myself we make up the entire Male PE department
Myself (varsity assistant HC/OC) JV HC Freshman HC
having the assistant HC title lets me kind of run things, handle admin stuff, paperwork, phone calls, etc from 8-3
so we essentially get a HC at each level on campus, all in the same department where we get to teach/talk with each other all day

Keep in mind Mariner, that the vast majority of football programs nationwide are probably not going to have separate divisions of teams (if for no other reason than #'s) In every program I have been associated with here in Louisiana, all the coaches coach both JV and Varsity, with the JV "coordinators" (simply playcallers and game managers) being position coaches on Varsity.

You need to have a good split I think. In 2011 and 2012 we had the unfortunate issue of having all JV coaches be personnel that were outside of the school system and only had one coach (the Varsity HC) in the High School. Throw that in with 2 varsity coordinators at the MS level who did little to recruit MS kids because they were already swamped with varsity kids and it was a bit of a logistical mess. This year, I got hired on to teach in January at the HS giving us 2 coaches (HC Varsity and DC JV) at the HS. We then have the varsity OC, Varsity DC, and JV DL/Varsity WR coach at the Middle School, Varsity LB/JV WR coach at the Elementary level and only one outside person (JV HC) on staff. I like the set up we have and am really interested in getting to see my kids each day and get a chance to recruit rising 10, 9, and 8th graders to our JV program
