so today was our first day of summer practice. Took a week off due to graduations and finals, and boy let me tell you it was a mess today at practice. I mean the qb forgetting signals(4.0 student btw), line not knowing who to block, vertical sets were horrible. It seemed like we have never practiced a day before in this offense.
we are a spread no huddle and we try and snap the ball about every 5-7 seconds. so granted we are moving fast but I now wonder if we are moving too fast or the week long break forced kids to take a step back.
just venting and wondering if we should even have a months dead period before camp starts. im still pissed about it and its been 5 hours ago.

it happens
we took a week off for finals after spring ball and last week was a little rusty, they'll get back in to it soon enough
is the dead month you have before camp a state mandatory thing? or are you guys choosing to give them that time off?

I don't think it's state mando. We are in so Cali. I think the HC choose this. But after today he may reconsider it.
I know it happens I jut wonder what way I can prevent this later. I don't think I had this issue before.

Over two months until your first game and you're worried about a bad Monday practice?!

If there is anything I have learned about the uptempo no huddle (and my guess would be offense in general), it's that when you come back from breaks it's going to look off. The important thing is the tempo and the FINISH are there. Forgetting signals or shaky pass game timing stuff is easy to fix, as long as you guys are getting your tempo and finish out of everyone.

It will come back faster later in the summer. Kids aren't professionals or in college. It's not their job to remember every detail about your offense when they take a break (although hopefully they do take it that seriously). Their going to be rusty, but it will come back quickly. Anticipate this problem next time and work around it.

You don't have a game this week do you? The reason that I ask is, if you don't have a game coming up, why would you worry about a sloppy practice after some time off?

So yes I was hoping they would take it a serious. But I see it's not there yet. I have OCD which is why I was frustrated about "1" practice. I know it's a while before we have our first game but again I guess my expectations were too high perhaps? We will see how today's practice goes.

Unless kids do it on their own, we don't even touch a football until our three-day camp last week of July (had couple 7-on-7s scheduled this month but other school cancelled on us).
Our first game is August 29.
I don't think it's time to worry yet.

so today was our first day of summer practice. Took a week off due to graduations and finals, ... Coach, things are different in different areas of the country. The first two sentences leave me with this question: Took a week off from WHAT? A week from June 18 was June 11. What were you doing football related on June 11?

I've only had one year since 2005 that the first day of school wasn't the worst practice. And that's because the 2nd day of school was way worse.

I'm even expecting us to look a little rusty on July 22 lol. We take a week or so off at the end of school, and start back 1st of June, then we have a 2 week dead period last week of june and 1st week of July. So we really don't get started good till July.

The two days I hate practicing the most...First Day of School and Picture Day. Although, we have swallowed our pride and are choosing NOT to practice on Picture Day.

We like to consider those "rough days" virtual WHITE-BOARD moments. Just press the erase button and start over...it all comes back soon enough. We are dealing with so many changes to personnel from workout-to-workout between vacations, other sports camps, baseball/basketball/lax summer leagues, beach-fever, etc...that if they get the lingo down, can align & understand the basics by pre-camp the first week in August, then we are in great shape to start fine tuning & expanding specialty packages come double sessions in mid-August.

Coach I wouldn't worry, more importantly kids had a little time off. In a week all that stuff will be cleaned up. We start our summer with a 3 week dead period. If you include the last week of school for finals it's a month off the field. I think what you may feel you are losing in the short term will help over the long term.
