I have one... Haven't used it to its full abilities yet but my plan for Spring Ball on is Make every kid get a twitter account, they all have cell phones, they can turn on mobile notifications and get a twitter notification/text whenever I send out a tweet Beats the heck out of trying to send mass texts I can just tweet "Varsity Football: Practice is moved back to 4:00 PM today, spread the word" and I'm done Just have to keep it professional as everyone always says don't be like the 23 year old female teacher posting pics of her smoking weed and referring to her students as jailbait on her twitter account

Last year we used a 3 day install plan and had the base offense in after 3 days
We are out earlier from school than ever and will have a month of practice time before our team camp ... I don't think we need to get things installed so quickly
I am seriously considering ONLY installing a minimized base package
1 run 2 passes 1 bootleg 1 sprint out
And just getting really good at those durin our 10 spring ball days

When I coached in Oregon, our kids were a bunch of {censored} nudists. For HS kids, they were incredibly comfortable running around in their birthday suits. In CA, NONE. For one, the hot water is rarely on because it costs money to heat the thing. Since cold water = uncomfortable for them, that's a dealbreaker. Another, I just don't think the kids around here are all that comfortable with the idea. Our football guys barely use the locker room, so they're an oddity anyways. A funny story about nudists One of our WRs is very comfortable with his body and is constantly naked and mooning/flashing teammates in the locker room Funniest kid I have ever coached, not a bad player, the highlight of one of our final team meetings was when another senior OL mentioned that over the course of their 4 years together he probably saw the WR's D!CK more than his own

It is generational and regional
Being closer in age to HS kids than most on this board I can say I don't wanna shower in a group shower with everyone... I hate going to the gym and the old guys are naked walking around... it is weird for me... i don't want to see any part of a man's body ever
Again I know to most of you this is "normal" but whatever your definition of "normal" is in anything around you it is based upon the environment you were brought up in

I feel like it is borderline unethical to require a kid to shower
I could see parents throwing a fit... whine about poor body image, self esteem, and bullying

I could seriously see someone at the ND clinic trying to physically remove your hat...
Not any of the ND staff, they'd probably just give you some evil stares and mean mugs
but I would imagine a number of the coaches/people in attendance would be die hard lifelong Irish fans

On a scale of 1-10 how inappropriate would it be to wear a Bama hat of mine to the ND coaching clinic? I'm a lifelong Bama fan living in the the heart of Northern Indiana. I wore it last year but obviously this year I figured it might be too soon after 42-14.. Thoughts? 11

I can tell from the responses that the word "camp" means different things to different people ... and I am assuming it is regional
when I am talking about camp I don't mean an in house "training camp"
there's no need...we have spring ball and can have unlimited practice the entire summer (full gear if we want)
we get so much practice time that I really don't think doubles is necessary
Around here, camp usually refers to a multi school team camp hosted at a local Hs or college
multiple teams come together ... some have position coaching from college guys, most include 7 on 7 and 1 on 1 drills and some sort of 11 on 11 team scrimmages
This type of camp is great for us, we host a huge one here, its our biggest fundraiser, we are beginning to become KNOWN for our camp... and with 8 schools you get to see 8 different offenses and defenses

we do ours in the middle of July
I like it because it is unique... most team camps in NorCal are right when school gets out for most ... mid to late June
I like having it a little bit later because i feel less rushed to install in spring ball and summer because we have more time and more practices before camp... we can focus more on fundamentals
I remember being in HS... we would rush to put a bunch of plays in during spring ball... have 1 padded practice, and it was off to team camp the first weekend school was out...
I like not being rushed to install... I like going in to camp having an idea what we run well, what we need to work on, and then camp is our litmus test for where we are mid summer
We get 3-4 weeks of practice... camp to see where we are... another 3-4 weeks of practice to fix things, make changes, refine, whatever you want to call it... and then we are ready for doubles and then school is starting
I think it helps break up our summer routine better because most of the 7 on 7 tourneys seem to be during June
and then again at the very end of July... I like having competitive things spread out through the summer

FWIW - new staff @ Southern Miss is apparently opening practices but are telling people up front NO video recording devices, NO cell phones (which could be video recording devices), & NO notepads. You are seen with any of those you will be asked to leave. But they are upfront about it. Notepads. Like a pen and paper? Really. No note taking either. Huh? You're not allowed to be caught thinking super hard either... Just watch, not allowed to commit anything to your Long term memory Any one with a focused stare or look of concentration is excommunicated from the church of spread

1. I felt the posts were harmless... No real insider/behind the scenes stuff... Nothing that most spread coaches haven't seen or used before
2. Both visits I saw multiple coaches filming practices
3. They've been pushing how they're now all access and open to public and Hs coaches
4. I respect them and that is why instantly removed both posts from my blog even though he only specifically asked that the second post be taken down
I meant the posts to be purely informational
I have a fear of being blackballed like someone mentioned
He mentioned in further email correspondence after I apologized to come introduce myself next time I visit... Part of me feels it's a trap and he is going to have the air raid secret service waiting to take me away to Guantanamo Bay

The videos of drills were added just for some depth in the blog post... They're basic drills I've used for the last 3 years... Just figured showing D1 kids doing them might appear better than my kids
They were open to filming, a ton of coaches had phones, iPads, and full on video cameras out the entire practice
I purposely didn't film any team or signaling or any form of communication/ verbiage
I spoke on schematics but I don't believe anyone on the CAL/LaTech staff invented any of the plays used

(1) You're not the first guy to get a random email from Tony Franklin. Just be kind in response and you can actually keep a pretty good open channel from there. I mean unless you want to stand on your first amendment rights (they don't have any authority to tell you to take it down, I don't think, given that it was in public), but I'm guessing you'd rather just keep it moving on this one. (2) Welcome to the new world. I linked to your stuff and some other big sites did too, and it doesn't take much to make the rounds. They kind of invited this with the open practice stuff ("We have no secrets,") but when push comes to shove coaches get secretive anyway. We also live in a world where fan blogs eat up this kind of info, and your posts were very well done so it's going to get circulated. If it makes you feel any better I spoke to a Sports Illustrated reporter friend of mine the other day who visited Cal, and he said they told him a good deal of info but a surprising amount of it was "off the record," including exactly how many plays they have and stuff like that. Feel free to PM me if you have any etiquette stuff. I'm sure brophy is a great resource on this too. Yeah it is crazy... I did a search of my name the other day and found my blog on a ton of different sites and linked in articles... it was weird to see... but I guess it is a good thing? enough people felt it was worth reading

So I'm literally, shocked and blown away right now as I type this... Apparently my blog is more popular than I thought...
I just got a personal email from Tony Franklin himself asking me to take down my blog posts from spring ball... They have too much insider information... I thought what I had was generic, I wasn't giving up anything that was a secret in my opinion... But I apologized, I feel bad for upsetting him
And I'll be taking the posts down once I get home
I'm still in shock...am I a bad person?

It's a pain. We had a kid who was a complete idiot, and the perfect coach to pair with him. This happened twice: The kid would get a 15-yd late hit or UR flag. It was flagrant, and not the first time, even in that game. He'd {censored} about it and cuss the ref, so we'd pick up a 25-yd bonus. Then the DC would freak out at the ref and we'd get 25 more. Screaming and swearing would ensue and they'd both get tossed and I couldn't even tell you how many more 25 yd penalties we picked up along the way, There was a lot of arithmetic and the ball would usually end up around the 5, no matter where it was before. To call this frustrating wouldn't begin to describe it, our coach was gifting them a TD. After that, I developed a policy of physically restraining the DC, but it was embarrassing and definitely set a really bad example and let to many of our discipline problems, and probably explained why I went from a guy on the street to HC/OC in a year and he stayed DC. Everywhere I've been the policy has been that only the HC is allowed to get penalties. Yeah I got kicked out of a JV game once as a HC because 2 assistants got flagged... they got thrown within 3 seconds of one another, I hadn't even had the chance to yell at the first guy before the second flag came out... Ref said bye coach I was not happy

I do wear shorts every day of my life - gamedays (usually) and weddings get pants I wear shorts most game days unless it is REALLY cold Pretty common around here... a lot of cargo shorts on game days I obviously wear pants if it is an occasion that requires a suit I wear nike pants/sweats to work a little during the winter, but the weather is really warming up here so the pants are going bye bye again I despise wearing jeans

There is no excuse for a man to wear a visor... PERIOD Also never wearthose stupid jackets baseball coaches wear... Light windbreaker jacket that has short sleeves... There is no excuse for a professional to show his {censored} by making ridiculous blanket statements either, but ... here we are. Notice, I didn't say "there is no reason for a professional to wear shorts & a hat to a clinic. PERIOD" or "There is no reason for a professional coach to wear shorts during a Friday night, Varsity football game... PERIOD" ... Those would be blanket statements and - to many - would be considered ridiculous. I know you were trying to be funny - at least I hope so... but, I failed to find humor in it. We should seriously be critiquing the styles & clothing choices of another coach? I mean, I have my opinions on what I think is "appropriate" attire for games, clinics, classroom, etc. but that is between me and our staff ... I don't intend to preach that on to you or other coaches not on our staff. Now, should we work together, then we'll need to have this discussion ... otherwise, I'll keep the commentary to myself. Granted, when I see coaches wearing what I "deem improper" I don't make a big deal of it to them. But, I do find it harder to take them seriously - and that is a shame, I know ... we do that naturally even though we know better. But, I hope I can refrain from trying to call someone out or whatever simply because I have a personal preference that is opposite of theirs. Umm it was a joke, Does it really matter what a coach wears? No Everyone has opinions I made a joke reflecting mine

I think the only way to have success doing this is like some have mentioned above, providing cheap nutritious food to your players For a while i was buying PB and J for the kids... but I was spending a ton of money and bought a new car so I need to be a little tighter with my money... at least until my rap career takes off I wish I could buy protein powder for all the kids but it is not allowed
