Same here. Had a kid "commit" to track at a school in VA...there was no recruitment. I was confused...the kid is a senior and throws the shot 36 feet from power position. WTF

We have 2 main organizations in our area:
Pop Warner (3rd grade through 6th grade)- weight restrictions Unweighted organization (3rd through 8th)
then we have middle school football (7th and 8th grade)

Work on your team. You have ZERO control over your opponents, and obviously there is always work to be done on with your guys.
I would try to find film of whatever the new hire coaches ran at their previous stop- there's a high likelihood that some component of what they did in the past will be incorporated in their new team.
The ENTIRETY of my focus is on my guys only. Being the best version of us that we can be. Try to maximize your team athletically and academically, and nurture great leadership. The wins will come.

I guess it depends on how your community views athletics- is it part of the "academic enrichment" of the student or is it a stand-alone entity?
Our state has a transfer policy that, IMO,is fairly relaxed...enough to where the kids/families can make good decisions for them AND coaches can still somewhat build programs. Essentially:
1) ANY physical move of residence will allow kids to play immediately...and IMO if the family wants to up and move into a district (for whatever reason) then I'm cool with it
2) All kids are allowed a ONE TIME transfer prior to their 11th grade year. If they start at school B...and transfer back to their home school A before DAY 1 of their junior year there is no penalty. This includes transfers to/from private schools.
3) An incoming 9th or 10th grader can "choice" to a school outside of his/her home school boundaries with no penalty if the accepting school is a "choice" school...they must provide their own transportation.
4) If a child is "choiced" they can transfer back to their homeschool at anytime with no penalty.
I feel that these rules are lenient enough to allow families to do what they want BUT tough enough where if they want to transfer their are some limitations/hoops to jump through.

Also challenge him by being ULTRA critical of technique, 6/7 second effort during a play, footwork/hand placement etc. Don't make it easy for him!
We had a Penn State commit at RT (#5 OG in the Nation). He annihilates everyone- big strong explosive and athletic. I played OL in college as did my OL coach, so when we do weekly grades he typically receives a "middle of the pack" grade because we are VERY critical of the little things. He take too big of a step, punch without thumbs up, elbows get wide etc...he gets blasted.
This approach helped him develop REALLY quickly and challenge him daily on these things.

I really believe that having/developing a system that can stand the test of time is the answer. I'm in search of this holy grail as we speak...I thought I had it but I started messing around with jets/rockets a couple of years back and it totally threw me off track. I tried to adopt the traditional wing-t but it's just not me- I'm a zone/power o/count GT/playaction coach to the bone...It's what I believe in and know the best. Next time I'm in a position to OC, I will be running what I believe in for sure UPDATE FROM 11.5 YEARS AGO! I eventually landed as an OC, went back to my Pro-Style roots. It felt good, learned a lot. I am currently a HC with and OC running his offense that is very different from my experiences, but philosophically similar.

Sarcastic- yes.
You're not wrong in the message being conveyed, but I think the approach is a$$hole-ish. A simple "No this is not ok..." and explain why. Be direct and to the point- truthful.
There is ZERO need for sarcasm in coaching. It's not funny; it's belittling and always is received in a negative manner. It builds walls in player-coach communication.
I am a recovering sarcasm-abuser- things are WAY better now for me and my players.

No separation in Delaware. But we only have maybe 10 private schools with football. Only 1 of them is considered in our "large" school division.

No extra pay for us (Delaware public school). We get our stipend and that's it. Now I'm NOT sure if that is a blanket rule, but that is the norm. I know my pay is "stepped" every year of experience, but I received $0 incentive/bonus for winning 3 straight state championships...although I haven't paid for a beer in town since 2015!
I look at it as my stipend is for my total attention to the program. I'm in charge of the success of it, so if I need to work 12mo a year then that's what we do.
Luckily, I have a great staff full of "dads"- we all have kids, and some of us coach multiple sports, so we work together to divvy the load as needed. I schedule our in-season around our families too- nothing happens on Saturday unless we have a game to allow us to see our kids play sports or spend time with the fam, and Sunday "meetings" are typically done through phone/text correspondence. We're pretty tight-knit so often we get our families together to watch NFL or college games.

There is a play calling thread here that has turned into a thread about this so I thought id make a new one... I believe total and complete vertical alignment is the best way to go to help a program if its possible. I understand as some have said that it isnt possible in some places. In other places its legal but not possible because the high school doesnt have control of the middle school... My question is this... what is the most important thing to vertical align... IS IT... Play names and terminology or, Drill work or, what is it??? if you could only align 1 thing what would it be I have been in places where the middle school coach doesnt think the middle school kids can run the offense the high school uses for whatever reason. So if you cant convince or cant legally do it as a whole... what area would you want to try to influence to better prepare your incoming freshmen? Drill work/technique Its easier to teach a kid terminology, as that can be done year round without sweat equity, than to have a kid learn footwork or technique for 2yrs in middle school then have to wholesale change their movement patterns when they get to 9th grade. I know that our middle school can't run our offense or defense verbatim...and I have no problem with that. But IF they are running inside zone, I expect that their technique mimics ours- so that a kid comes in as a 9th grade running back and has a basic understanding and technique of how we run it. If they run guard trap, they can do what they want because we don't run it. Same thing defensively- we're a 4-2-5...they're a 5-3 because that's A) what they know how to coach B) what they believe in C) successful against what they see from opponent offenses. All I ask is they get the kids to me and they love to hit, run to the ball, and love football.

Yes it is emphasized heavily. Year 1- we asked the kids to do it on their time...big mistake as they had no idea what they were looking at. I considered that a coaching fail as they were never taught how to watch it. Year 2 and beyond- current schedule of film is: Monday - Meetings and Film for 2hrs, but optional continuation of film that sometimes goes for another hr or 2. Tuesday- post-practice film session for 30 mins - OL/QBs, LB/DL Wednesday- post-practice film session for 30 mins - QBs/WR/RB, LB Thursday- post-practice team dinner and film session for 20-30mins - mixed offense, DBs Friday- pre-game meetings with short film 10mins - SPT, followed by Def/Off Are you practicing on Mondays or just meetings? Just meetings, but we are looking to change that and do a light run through+cut the film time a bit.

Game 1- We're down 14-0 and hadn't made a single defensive statistic yet. 2 plays, 2 TDs. Game 2- Win toss, 3 and out, punt blocked for a TD. Offense gets ball back, drives, throws pick 6. 14-0 and defense hadn't been on the field yet. We lose the game 28-14, and they scored on TWO blocked punts for TDs and a pick six... Have mercy on my poor kids' souls... 0-2 start, 2-2 currently. Beat the last 2 opponents combined 103-14 (53-0, 50-14). Trying to keep a conference win-streak alive...currently sitting at 20 straight dating back to 2015.

I am a HC and coach DBs. I made the switch from offense when I became a HC for various reasons:
1) My self-worth is not dependent on me "managing" or micromanaging everything. I am in charge, and allow my coaches to coach/do their jobs. 2) I hired a guy who I trust and believe in to run the offense. He's got a great mind, and we problem-solve in a similar manner. 3) I have a DC that needed some freedom to "spread his wings" and develop- he did just that. 4) I was hired and lost our DB coach around the same time...and, for whatever reason, it was impossible to find a DB coach so I said phuk it I'll do it.

Soft people will always find something to complain about.
When I was an assistant we were getting waxed week-to-week. It never bothered me...the score at least...because my expectation is the kids fight to the end no matter what. We had some complainers on staff- I guess they felt that way to take the sting out of the a$$ whooping. I don't look at it like that. I think it's more embarrassing for someone to come out and take a knee with 5mins left in a game.
Now, over the past 3 yrs we have been the ones dishing out the whoopings. And wouldn't you know- the teams that used to beat us 42-0, 56-6 etc are now getting there butts stomped by us and they are the first to complain. I don't listen to them (or anyone outside of our team meetings for that matter). People will love you or hate you...but that's their issue not ours.
Here are some examples I've dealt with:
-We're up 36-0 in the 4th quarter. We are steady running the ball...4min offense. The defense is blitzing 8 guys consistently, and our JV RB is getting hammered. We run Naked boot for a 1st down. The coach freaks out...calls me classless for "throwing on them" when up by so much. I reiterated that I will not throw if you are not blitzing. F him
-Homecoming game- we're up 24-13 going into the 4th. We rattle off 2 scores to make it 38-13 still no running clock. They still have 1's in (obviously). We go 4min offense. Haven't thrown the ball since the start of the 4th. We get to a point where they have burnt all their timeouts, and if we get a first down we can kneel. We call split zone- RB breaks 5 tackles and goes 27yds. "You guys are classless...F you" no hand shake. Again...F them

What do you all do to get your kids to join/buy-in/retain and maintain numbers in your community and school district? Camps/academies? Coaching clinics? Friday night recognition? Varsity coach and player attendance at youth games? We feel like the youth leagues and middle school team in our area has lacked a connection to our program which has created drop off in numbers due to them not feeling like they are part of what we do. Just want to generate some ideas moving forward. Definitely! 1) Camp directed toward your feeder program. Service them! For example, our local pop warner program starts Aug 1st and have a 10hr acclimatization period where there is no pads being used. Teams are selected before then. Maybe we hold a camp at the end of July to help them "early install," have my coaching staff teach fundamentals to the kids WITH the youth coaches assisting- giving them some insight/new drills etc. Charge minimally...not trying to make money off of them but gear them up with shirts etc with HS logo on it. 2) Clinics- for sure. Totally free clinic for youth coaches. Variety of topics. We have an open door policy with the youth guys- they can call/meet/visit/walkthrough WHATEVER they want to learn about with my varsity staff- we set it by appointment but could very well hold a clinic. 3) Youth night- we host our youth kids, with jerseys on, free admission to some of our home games. Maybe recognize different youth staffs at half-time of home games. 4) For youth games: we have players run the chains, I (along with 2 assistant coaches...both coordinators) volunteer coach with the pop warner program (this is a HUGE undertaking so it may not be feasible for you), and we have coaches and kids in attendance to every home youth games. They play in our HS stadium on Sundays. All of these are great ideas, but the BIGGEST aspect is open and honest communication- let the youth guys know that they're doing a great job...go speak to their kids after their practices- provide motivation for them. Your presence as a HS program is a must. The kids and coaches need to see that THEY are important enough for the "big guys" to come see them/talk to them.

We don't do anything in particular. But I will say that "the grind" stems from a mentality that trickles top-down. If the coaches running the off-season stop bringing juice to the workouts the kids will follow. You can't fake energy. Start by selling it to the staff- the kids will follow.

Yes- for 5 months. I wasn't to her married yet.
Lived in VA for 3 years. Had built the program (as an assistant) to the point where we were going to make a run at the playoffs. My girlfriend (wife now) wanted to move back to Delaware, so we bought a house in June. Closed on it, and I moved her into it in the beginning of July. I stayed in VA, living in my HC's basement until January to see us through the season. Then I resigned and moved to DE where I've been ever since.
It wasn't easy, but solidified that my wife is one of the rare species of "supportive coaches wives" who is trying to win a game despite sacrifices on her end...she's more competitive than me!

Not all private schools are like this obviously, but THIS is one of the main reasons I stayed away from coaching private school.
And like coachd mentioned above I can only HOPE that the fired coach is just throwing that out there in retaliation to his dismissal...I'd hate to think that an education-based institution would harbor hate the way this is being presented.

There are 3 sports in which I feel that coaches suffer from these things the most (due to an apparent abundance of "knowledge" of these games): Football, Basketball, and Baseball.
We just recently had an incident in baseball in which a kid quit the team, then his dad was at the next game and made threats to our HC, who happens to be a state trooper. Didn't work out too well for the dad...although I am sure the HC didn't lock him up despite the threats.
People are crazy anyway, then you throw emotional-involvement with their son and the team, and a mob mentality when things are not great...recipe for disaster.
Again, like others have said, be proactive in the parent meetings- set expectations and consequences BEFORE it gets to that point, and be quick to ask for a meeting involving AD or admin.

"Eagle/Bear/Grizzly (whatever your mascot is) Offense"
Give them some props. We give a lot of rewards to our best effort scout guys. T-shirts, carry our championship belt, honorary captains etc. And honestly the most important is that they become our "next guys in" on the depth chart. So being a great scout player leads to playing time at the varsity games.

Hope I'm not screwing up this thread if I take the discussion from practice to game day. How similar is what you do pre-game to what you do pre-practice? And, similarly, do you do any organized stetching at halftime ... and if so, is it the same as pre-game? An abbreviated version? And if not, why not? It's similar but not exactly the same. Friday nights there's more of a "show them off" feel to the warm-up. Like other teams, we have our chants/rituals we do solely on game days. A lo of it IMO has to do with continuation of the mental prep for being game-ready. Monday-Wednesday are pretty low-key..."we're here to work" feel. We keep them moving quickly, helmets stay on, not a ton of traditional warm up lines or anything like that. Thursday we treat as a run-through for game day, including our stretch. But after that, we go straight to our normal practice schedule. Friday nights we bring kids out to the field early (like everyone else) based on position groups. QBs, followed by O skills and return men/kickers, then bring out the rest of the team. When the "fat guys" hit the field, we start our pre-game warmup routine.

Heard a great speaker talking about not starting practice with stretch. It’s slow paced, boring and redundant. They stretch about 20 minutes into practice but try to start with something more engaging. I thought it was a great idea. By the time the regular season gets started, practice can feel too familiar and scripted. Any ideas for what to start practice with? On air, up tempo offense? One on ones? Everyday- we start practice with a traditional "pre-practice" routine...up-temp drills with some teaching. Then we stretch (dynamics and a static hip circuit), then we head to indy/special teams and so forth.
