We are a small school and usually have only about 20-25 players. We have been very solid on defense and hit and miss on offense. I've always advocated for equal time for O and D, especially when I was the d-coordinator. Now I'm the HC/O-coordinator and I'm starting to think about stealing time away from the defense in an attempt to help our offense produce more. I'm wondering what you guys think. Is it robbing Peter to pay Paul or does offense need more time?

Don't steal practice time from the Defense, if they can't score they can't win!!! If I feel we need a little extra time with something I will have a group of kids come in in the morning or at lunch on Monday or Tuesday and do stuff with them. I have found that when you make a special time to meet every once in a while the kids feel pretty special and we get a lot out of the morning sessions we have!
Hope this helps.

With defense we do more individual and group than we do team when compared to Offense. Hard to replicate the speed of your opponent in defensive team period

Keep defense the priority..
If you have to reduce or modify the offense then do that.

There are different ways to skin this cat.
I was once the DC at a big school and our HC was into shorter practices and giving the O most of the time. Our kicking game was simple and were were a multiple front defense. He said we either had lots of stunts or lots of fronts or a minimized combination of.
I remember getting 10 minutes of Team D time on a Tues/Wed practice.
What we learned was to fly around like crazy (I'm talking about the coaches) because we wasted no time between reps. We told our 1 D that we would go 3 and out. If they loafed, they came out and the 2's would then get their reps. We set up our conditioning reps based on how many reps the 1 D guys got. Hope this makes sense.
What my HC forced me to create was a urgent, intense, pedal to the metal team time. Our D indo was 15, group was 10-12. So, I'm talking 30 minutes max of Defensive time.
We kicked but on defense. In '91 (yes, this was a while ago) we gave up 34 points for the season. The next year we gave up 61 on the season and then I left for my first HCing job.
MY POINT?
It's not what you get (alotted time), it's what you choose to do with it and how your are able to teach your tempo to your players.
MY OTHER POINT? Anything can work if you understand what you're trying to achieve and you know how to achieve it.
Within reason.

Thanks for the responses! I have paired down the offense so that should help. I've been debating on stealing a little more time from the D to also try and help our productivity. We have been looking at other tweaks as well.

The HC usually gives O and D 50/50 time except for thurs when offense gets more. since we both coach both sides, if one side or the other needs a little more time its not a big deal. the one thing I might add is, what does it tell the kids if you always practice one sode or the other more

I personally like to split time between offense and defense. When I was in hs I played at a small school and we usually watched film and had the jv game on mondays, offense on tuesdays, defense on wednesday, walk through and freshman game on thursday, game on friday. This year I'm coaching a 7th and 8th grade team and we play most of our games on Sundays so I get a full five days of practice. I've decided I'm going to try and split each day between offense, defense, and special teams. I am big on the fact we must tackle and block everyday and after that we'll work on what we need to work on the most.
