Put most of your Veer Package on the shelf...tighten your O-Line splits and run the heck out of a Power Based Package.

Why bring a question like this to a public forum? You are the HFC at your school...you know both your school's, and your community's values, and only you really knows ALL of the details surrounding the situation involving this kid. Regardless of what you decide to do in this situation...you best be discussing this with your Administration asap. They are the ones that you are going to need to have your back when the stuff hits the fan!! This is true, but he is just looking for advice which is the reason for this forum. Some might have had a similar situation and can give some wisdom based on experience. Perhaps...

Just Texted our QB saying he wants to come out for football. Our Scrimmage is Tomorrow. The kid quit after his freshman year. Multiple D1 offers in other sports. 6'4", 210lb, 4.6, 30+ vertical. He would like to only play Wide Receiver. We're 12/21 personnel and the other Wide-out is a 6'5 4.9 guy. At a school of 195. I went in to this season thinking we would get to level 3 in the playoffs. This addition could be the difference in getting to level 4 or state. Anybody handled a situation like this before? We're going to have a discussion about expectations and playing time. This would cut into a lot of guys time that worked hard all off season and have stuck with our program. Why bring a question like this to a public forum? You are the HFC at your school...you know both your school's, and your community's values, and only you really knows ALL of the details surrounding the situation involving this kid. Addendum to my original post...
I met with our Administration today, and we have located space within the School District where we will be able store our old weight room equipment. Thus we will not be required to make any hasty decisions regarding what we will do with it.
Thanks to all of you for sharing your thoughts and providing suggestions...this is a GREAT website!!!

We are moving into a small school that is purchasing all new equipment for their weight room.
The room is rather small so it is obvious that we need to get rid of much of the old equipment...bars & weights included.
Any suggestions regarding a fair and reasonable way to market the old Weight Lifting equipment?

Loved the one man DW clinic that he presented in a jam packed class room!! Still have a copy of that old VHS tape. Talked to him on the phone several times about his fantastic offense...wish I could have met him in person.
RIP Coach!!!!

We used to do this at the Juco level.
If the talent is anywhere near equal, having the right attitude/mindset in game #2 is typically a huge component in determining who wins the 2nd time around. It's probably much more important than your X's & O's strategy. If you won the first game, you best be extremely aware of overconfidence in your troops. A win in game #1 can easily lead to a lackadaisical attitude for everyone concerned, in both preparation and on your level of intensity on game day.

Alternative viewpoint here. I believe in the weight room, accountability, discipline, as much as any football coach. But when I watch film of struggling teams and when we have struggled there are tons of mental assignment errors. They just mentally screw up more than good teams. Now you can probably trace some of this to physical toughness. But to me this also comes back to teaching and the role of the coach. This is where I believe a great off-season program can greatly reduce the number of mental mistakes on the field. If kids are allowed to show up late, skip reps, and do whatever they want, they will do the same thing during the season. They will make mental mistakes and get stupid penalties. If you have an off-season where they are held accountable to doing things the right way all the time, you will have less mental mistakes on the field. To me this is the key to successful coaching...period! What ever you are doing...insist that everyone does it correctly (or at least to the very best of their God given ability). If it is worth doing it is worth doing right!! This includes their effort to become successful in whatever the task at hand may be. Be consistent every day regarding expectations...this cannot be a sometimes thing. Hold EVERYONE accountable!! Lastly...CELEBRATE EXCELLENCE!!

Whatever policy that you decide upon...put it in writing, and clear it with your Administration. Sooner or later, you will need their support.
Make sure that everyone in your program (players, parents and staff) are CLEARLY informed of all aspects of your rules...including the consequences for breaking the rules. Hand out written copies of your rules, and if at all possible, take the time to personally explain your rules.
Be prepared to fairly enforce any, and all of the rules that you decide upon.

Should i, a white man.... You're scared of your players or something? How is it a foregone conclusion that we're expecting people to express outrage and go bonkers because the American justice system is being performed? You've already resigned that your team will lose all capacity for rational thought and will be excused for whatever they do tomorrow. It feels good to believe you're performing some self-righteous act, but all this expectation is that your players are only capable of the most banal of actions. You don't expect or accept they could conduct themselves maturely. I'm not suggesting you're wrong or dismissing anything about you personally. I'm questioning if that holding our fellow citizens to the lowest possible standard is actually benefiting anyone. brophy you do a great job with your X's & O's blog, etc. However, in this case I believe that you are off base. I know that you have coached in some inner-city schools...thus you are obviously aware of what coachrush is dealing with right now with his kids in St. Louis. Personally, I think that he is doing a heck of a job. If I misinterpreted your post...I apologize!!

coachrush - I salute you for the job that you are doing with those valiant young men in your school that choose to be a part of your football program. It is apparent that you have their best interest at heart...above and beyond football. Keep up the great work...they need you!!!

Honestly, if we just got all our guys not to have weird {censored} happening to them or conflicting with their schedule we are going to be in great shape! -One was kidnapped by their dad who no longer had custody (he lives w/ an aunt & uncle). Police were actually looking for him. Luckily he was found, is back with his aunt & uncle & his dad is in jail (already had other warrants for his arrest). -A grandma had a stroke & lives in New Orleans. We are in Michigan. That was not an overnight or during the day visit. -Another had the grandma he lives with lose her job & ask him to start a new job so he can help pay bills. Instead of getting a weekend only job he took on a full time job not thinking through how he wasn't going to be able to keep the hours when school started. -Another has a mom who died from an OD & was moving to a new school with his dad who is also a druggy. He has lived with his aunt or grandma, but dad has custody & insisted he moved with him. -Our best LB has high BP & didn't pass his physical. He goes back to get it checked again this morning. -Lastly & this a minor issue compared to the rest, but on our Varsity roster of 31 we have like 8 band guys & 2 of them are going to play both ways. They miss Mondays for band. Hang in there Coach...those kids really need you!! Good things happen to good people!!

Pretty straightforward. We have a player that is graduating and will be attending a state university. He asked me about how he can get involved with football as a student manager. Any idea who I'd reach out to or tell him to reach out to for this? Hat's off to you Coach!! You are undoubtedly a true asset to both your school and your community!!

On a personal level (some weeks I call the game from the box, others the sideline): 1. Backpack 2. Something caffeinated in the backpack because by the end of the week I'm mentally exhausted. 3. Something to eat in the backpack. I'll usually munch on a sub from Subway on defensive series if I'm up in the box. 4. A fly ass quarterzip. Gotta look good at all times. Seriously

If your aren't in a state that has high school spring football, being both the head football coach and head track coach is a natural.
This is a win,win situation for everyone. The kids become better conditioned athletes, they get to compete in a unique setting that combines both individual and teamwork challenges; and the Track & Field environment is also uniquely conducive to developing awesome friendships with the student-athletes from other schools.

Anybody in the NJCAA can offer a Full ride if they wanted to I believe. This is not necessarily so. Conference rules typically dictate scholarship guidelines for their membership.

Mississippi, Texas, Kansas, some Iowa, NDSCS all do, along with most Arizona schools, NMMI. NDSCS does not offer football scholarships anymore. They are currently a football only member of the Minnesota Collegiate Athletic Conf. (MCAC)...a non-scholarship athletic conference.

Iowa and Kansas do offer athletic scholarships. Most are partial scholarships that are combined with other forms of financial aid.

My first suggestion would be to have a realistic, definitive plan going in and make sure that your Administrators are on-board with this plan...if not don't take the job. This plan does not have to be a pie in the sky type of a plan that requires a bunch of new this or new that...you just have to have a plan that can demonstrate measurable improvements.
Then, if you have good people skills and you are a good coach from an X's & O's standpoint...I am pretty certain that you will be able to demonstrate measurable improvements in the program at the end of the first year. These improvements may, or may not show up in the win-loss column but I am guessing that, more often than not, they will. Some of the obvious areas of measurable improvement might be GPA's, Attendance, Attitudes/Citizenship/Discipline Referrals, improved participation #'s and better retention, fewer complaints from parents, etc. I am sure that there are many more that might be extremely pertinent to specific situations...if they are important, identify them and if these problems are controllable from your position, make a concerted effort to remedy them.
Plan your work, and work your plan!!
Rebuilding can be very gratifying, but it is not for everyone. If you are thinking primarily about your career won-loss record or that this is a golden opportunity for career advancement, don't do it.

Meeting with Superintendent of our school this afternoon. Our school and program have been a complete dumpster fire since 1951. We won 2 games in a season for the first time in 10 years last year, and finished with a winning record this year for the first time in 21 years. Yet thing are still a mess. We have no support from admin, teachers and we get little to no involvement from parents and community. Put yourself in my shoes, if you could ask him one thing, what would it be? Coach, If the situation is really this bad regarding support, and you can't turn that around, I have a feeling that you might be in the wrong place to effectively rebuild their football program. Support from Administration, faculty, families, and community are typically major components in most rebuilding projects. Kids know when people care. If they know that you, and those mentioned above, sincerely care about them and their potential success, they will be much easier for you to recruit. In my opinion support/teamwork is much more important than improved facilities, new uniforms, etc. You win with people!! Other folks may have better facilities, etc., but if you have the best people (and I am not necessarily referring to the best players) you will win in the long run. I would suggest that you do everything in your power to win these people over. Earn their trust by enthusiastically supporting them, just as you hope to have them support you in your endeavor.

Have any of you ever played "Flickerball"? It is designed to be played outdoors, which we have done...kids loved it. So, we modified the rules etc. and played it in the gym. We hung tires from the baskets for the goals. The rules are much like basketball so there is minimal contact, if there is a foul, the opponent get a free throw (ala basketball). Google "Flickerball".
Just another way to keep the football in the kids' hands...throwing and catching in a competitive environment...hard to beat it for a great off-season activity!!!
It used to be very popular in the upper midwest...Chicago suburbs in particular.
