so Our school makes us wait to start our offseason lifting until January. I figured we don’t want the guys to wander around without direction so I figured we’d do some team building. However, I don’t have a lot of team building activities. Do you guys have any that worked well or didn’t work well?

You're talking about team building activities for December?
My suggestion: Don't do it. It's a full time gig to be a football player nowadays, give them a break and get back after it in January

I would either tread lightly with this one or just flat-out ask your administration if it would be allowed. Is it really just the weight lifting that can't be allowed until January or is it all offseason stuff? I can't imagine them having a policy that doesn't allow weight lifting to start until January, yet they would be okay with "team building activities" in December.

Holidays...a fitting community service project may be worth your consideration. There are a lot of folks in need.

I love being around the guys but after reading some other posts I think they are onto something. Kids want breaks. Adults want breaks.
I took last season off from coaching and this season I had more fun coaching than I ever have. Also I always enjoyed coaching more the years I have also coached baseball and got a break.
I think we may see a trend of less is more and teams that give breaks will see benefits so others will follow...hopefully!

Got to let kids be kids some time.
They're not getting paid or on scholarship. Heck I know of some HS coaches that demand more time from their kids than pro or college coaches can or do.

Give them a book to read, like any of Jeff Janssen's books, Extreme Ownership, a John Maxwell book. The Art of the Deal. Something that will help then develop leadership and a winning culture

If you want to do something don't let it be super structured. We always do an end of the year paintball night. Lets both the coaches and players take some steam out on each other. Or we try and take a group to the local college football game. While it is close most of them have never been since we have D3 or FCS teams around. Lets them be together and have fun but not feeling like another thing they have to do. All of this is optional even to the coaches. We will always have at least one coach who will volunteer though.

I’ve done paintball when I was at another school. It was a good time. Our players don’t have a ton of support around them. So by keeping in contact with them they feel that someone cares. It just is something that is one the continueing growing list of coaching responsibilities.

Team building starts with some sort of group activity, right? The key is processing that activity afterward...and it doesn't have to be super heavy or long in duration...but it can be.
Athletes can and will bond through shared experiences but you can really build a team through debriefing those experiences.

I Coach at a small school where most of the kids know each other already, but this makes it easier for the underclassmen or those borderline kids you have to feel connected to the team too. I know some people will say don’t do anything out of season, let them move on to basketball or wrestling. Really this isn’t for those kids it’s the ones that may only have football.
