9-1 Conference Champ sitting at home because they are ranked lower in their region...than a 6-4 team that did not win their conference? What sense does that make? plenty..... Win games against teams of equal or larger size that win games. That 9-1 "conference champ" could be a D3 school - 3rd largest classification in a league with a bunch of D4 and D5 schools who aren't any good and didn't win any games. While that 6-4 team could be a D7 school smallest classification in a league with all D5's who won a ton of games. with 32 teams getting in generally if you've won 9 or 8 games your pretty much in. But I think this system does the best job of - 1 making every game on the schedule count and 2 - getting the best teams in - beat teams equal to or greater than your size who beat teams. You shouldn't be rewarded for playing scaboochies. Also you only get points for game you've won or your opponent won. You get don't get credit for losses. And it makes every game in the season matter. I can't stand district play where potentially only 5 games of your season actually matter. How you do you unschedule conference games?

I think Ohio does an okay job with the playoff system. It is not perfect but you get rewarded from playing bigger schools and schools that win games. Sure some teams try to load up on cupcakes early, but if they don't win games it doesn't really help you. For instance, we beat a D1 team (largest divison) when we were D4 and it ended up not helping us as much because the team ended up having a really crappy year even though we thought they should be able to be around .500 at worse. Yes there have been 4-6 teams to make the playoffs and make runs but those teams are generally playing murderous schedules so it's a bit more palatable. www.ohsaa.org/sports/ft/boys/rankcalc.htm9-1 Conference Champ sitting at home because they are ranked lower in their region...than a 6-4 team that did not win their conference? We are program with approx. 100-110 Kids between JV and Varsity
We are a 1 platoon team
JV and Varsity at the same time with the same staff--however, traditionally we have flip-flopped offense and defense at the halfway point of practice.
We also follow the 30-5 rule (5 minutes off for every 30 on)
We are looking at revamping how we practice to be more efficient (who isn't, really?)
Open to any and all suggestions!

So you were the little guy with the big RB, huh? What did you think of 100,189 to watch a glorified practice? Re. Speakers...Tim Kight was good...I actually rather enjoyed Coach Tressel as well... I also sat in on Coach Meyer's chalk talk on kick off...he gets excited like he is a GA all over again Haha yes that was me It was cool to see that many people but oh my god I swear our games are louder We couldn't believe how quiet 100k people could be I have been going to OSU games since I was too young to remember it. I have been at games where, exactly like you said, felt like a library. Other games, you couldn't talk to the guy next to you... I also make a point to go to the Spring Game because I normally cannot make it back (I live in North Carolina) for a game during the season

They've had bucksweep going along with power. I'm more curious about wtf it is that Glenville is trying to do with their defense. Some extremely unsound fronts getting rolled out there... What I have had people tell me about Glenville is if they ever got some real coaching they would be real good... Athletes...athletes...athletes...

We are in the Charlotte, NC area and are looking for a few "small" schools to visit instead of having one "big" clinic trip this off season...
1. What is a polite way to find out what kind of offense/defense etc. a small school runs???
2. For anybody in NC what schools would you recommend?
Winston-Salem State NC A&T Davidson Wingate Livingstone Lenoir Rhyne NC Central
These are just a few schools of the top of my head that could be a day trip for us and would appreciate some info if anybody has any...

I didn't read all the responses so please forgive me if someone already said this: Your coaches will work harder and be more dedicated if they have some ownership. When a coach comes to me with an idea I always listen, and I take the approach of "Ok, sell me on this idea. Why is it better than what we are doing now? How does it better suit our kids? Is it cost(time) effective?" If it's his idea that we're implementing, I guarantee you he will work his @ss off to make it successful. Quite often, I will go along with things that I don't really believe in just so the guys under me will have that feeling of ownership and make that commitment. Example - three years ago I let my DC talk me into going to the 3-5. I've always been a 4-3 guy and that's what I believed in. But he was passionate and made good arguments so I let him take the reigns and he has done a fantastic job. This year, so far, we have set a school record with 5 shutouts and only given up 21 points in 7 games. Would we be enjoying the same level of success if I had overruled him three years ago? Would he have put his heart and soul in it for three years like he has? You looking for any more ast. coaches? Any time I bring something "fresh" I get the "I've been doing this longer than you" speach...

Do you hire somebody to run your defense?
Or did you hire somebody to be the Defensive Coordinator?

And I have never heard of kids NOT coming in on a Saturday. Heck, in a few of the New Orleans area districts, Saturday is the JV game day. They have Saturday JV games here, too. We don't have the varsity guys come in, though. Thursday night JV games...Friday varsity...Saturday==off... Although, we do have weight training during the school year for all the team... To be completly honest, I might go nuts if I had to come in on Saturday...

Wow...I can't believe that kids come in on Saturdays...I have never heard of that...
we have hudl so after the game hudl is loaded up...watch, grade, scout on your own...be ready to roll for meeting at 1:30 pm on Sunday...
I really, really, really like the idea of 2 hour meetings...our HC is big on spending as much "time" as we can in the office on Sundays...we end up wasting a lot of time on BS...

I could not find the article but prior to last season at Ohio State Doc Tressel (Jim's brother and Running back coach) was getting slammed with questions about the spread/zone read and how the Buckeyes are going to use Terrelle Pryor...
Doc basically said that they fell that they could get more out of the quarterback running the ball from the "I" than they could from the "gun"...freaked all Ohio State fans out...the Ohio Staff is going to "waste" Pryor again...
Flash forward to the Rose Bowl and all those bootlegs from the "I" that Oregon had NO-idea how to stop...
Another side note-we spent some time this past Sunday trying to figure out how to align our 35 defense to a 21 set...the answer our DC and HC came up with=get into a 4 man front...I laughed like hell...

Dave...
These are not rich white kids...these are poor black kids with no fathers...I know that one of them has a cousin who is a "real" Blood...
This is a very real danger...not just some kids "faking"...
Yesterday they just "rep'd"...tomorrow they could "bang"...

Thanks for the input...
What concerns me is that the city just 5-10 minutes up the road has real gangs and everything that comes with it...and these kids all know/run together...so I would not doubt it if behind them somewhere is some real bad dudes...

I think one of the reasons why these kids are drawn to the "gang" is that not one of them has ever met there dad...

Well...here the past few weeks...maybe even months...myself and another member of the staff have noticed a few of our kids that have started to wear/dress in gang attire and use gang language.
Now, we are not in a big city, and if anything I would consider our town rural. However we do have a "mini-big city" ten minutes north and they have "big city" problems...
I have talked to some of the kids, and they have I guess been flat out honest...they say they are NOT in the gang...but they "rep it"...I have talked to them until I was blue in the face that it doesn't matter if you are "in" or "rep" because you act/dress they way you do in the big city and run into a "real" gang member your 14/15 year old butt is going to have all the gang activity you want.
One of the kids is a honor student so logic would think he is too smart for this crap...
Another is a DI recruit...and the third could be a DI recruit in a year...
Soo...I need (desperately) any advice from anybody that deals with or has dealt with this situation...

I'm all about career advancement...if a better shot comes along...take it...
However, I also try to keep a "balance in the universe" so I would ride the school year out and leave a good "balance" with my previous school...

Just my opinion, and I don't coach the real little bobbleheads (8-10), but If my kid was taught to bearcrawl instead of taught how to play football correctly then I'd have concerns as a parent. As a coach, I view it as any easy way out of dealing with unathletic kids. Again, just my opinion, but its the coaches job to develop these kids. I know this can be done because we do it every year. We get unathletic, out of shape kids that have never played before and teach them how to play football on their feet. I just don't see the value of bear crawling other than in a goalline situation, but again, we play at an older level (12-14) where bearcrawling would be a liability IMO. I used to feel the same way about bear crawling until this past season when a few of the 8th grade kids I coach started to do it. They said it really helped them get penetration faster.

We did it, the kids liked it a lot. They are already in a good blocking position, and like you said, most of the time the kids just want to stand up and get out of a 3 point stance.
I think it worked well with us because we had a "zone" style blocking scheme and that we didn't really want to drive the d-line downfield, just prevent penetration.

Question for the board as the season rapidly approaches:
Is it better for a kid to play up a level and be a back up
OR
Is it better for a kid to play down a level and start
In my situation, at the middle school level we have a "Varsity" and a "Junior Varsity".
Varsity is made up of most if not all 8th grade kids.
Junior Varsity is made up of most if not all 7th grade kids.
We have a few 8th graders that are more than likely going to sit at the Varsity level but could get big minutes on the JV level...conversely we have 3-4 kids 7th graders that could run with the Varsity-but not start-but would be the 'go to' guys on the JV.
So, how would the board handle it?

If that 50 is pinching and slanting then how do they stop the jet/fly off of the wedge? The cirss cross action or the boot/sprint out. Luckily for us, we have only needed 4 or 5 guys to jam up the wedge, the back 6 or 7 is still just playing normal defense.
