You guys are all correct. I've ignored it or stowed it away in my brain for the most part. I think the one that really got me was the ish about our OL coach and harassing our JV coaches, most of whom aren't drinking age.

Summarizing our program - very talented in 15 and 16 and won our league. We graduated most of that talent and have started underclassmen at almost every position this season on top of having 10 new starters on D and 9 on O. It has been evident as we are 5-4 and eliminated from winning our league. Several of our parents can’t accept it. 3 really stand out.
Parent 1 - son graduated three years ago and he used to be friendly with us. He frequently posts on a local message board about the program and how incredible all of our players supposedly are. Up until this season everything was positive about the coaching. Even to this day, he tries to say our players are great, however he is now calling out our coaching. He has stated the DC has no idea what he’s doing and our OL coach is only allowed on staff because we want his son to come to the school. He went so far as to post a picture of the OL coach and say that his son is a “pansy”. He’s in the 8th grade BTW.
Parent 2 - son is a stud sophomore. Dad shopped him around while he was in middle school. He takes his son to some local training specialist blowhard whose claim to fame was making the Washington Redskins practice squad for a half season and parades clients around like he’s the reason why they have scholarship offers. Dad is on same message board as parent 1. The majority of his content is about how good his son is and how amazing his trainer is. However he’s turned on the staff lately, saying that our defense is a “pop warner” defense and we don’t know how to coach a “real defense”. He stayed on the board he’s going to “have a sit down with the principal and AD and discuss the state of the program”. I’d be stunned if he doesn’t transfer his son out of the school.
Parent 3 - has had two sons graduate from the program and has another on the freshman team. She has been very supportive in the past despite her sons hardly getting playing time. However she has recently blasted us on the school’s Facebook page, saying that our playbook is “straight from Madden”. I’ve heard ignorant things like that a bunch but she’d be one of the last I’d think to say that.
This will be the first time since 2013 we don’t finish ranked top 10 in the division and this is how we’re treated?

Maybe mention something about how to air your grievances. Suggest waiting 24 hours until posting something on the internet about the game. We’ve had a few parents this year make total asses out of themselves posting on message boards and or social media right after a game. All it does is it makes them look bad in the long run. Maybe mention something about how the internet is permanent.

Good job making sure your players didn't do anything stupid. Unfortunately there are a-hole coaches who can't control their kids.

I remember seeing him speak at a clinic a while back. His topic was "Zone pressures out of the 4-3".
He spent the first 20 minutes talking about how he believes in aggressive defense, creating turnovers and being the dominant unit on the field, etc. and showed us a cut up of his defenses doing such things. He must have had recent clips of his defenses from at least 5 different schools in the immediate area so he is a rolling stone...kind of makes sense now...

It's not what you know, it's who you know....
I've literally sat in a Glazier clinic with a college "coach" who didn't know what trap was. Didn't know what a reach block was either. But because he played for a well-known coach in college and made the right friends when graduated, he had no problem getting a college coaching job over guys who were schematically superior.
Truth be told, I don't think there's much difference between your average non-power 5 conference college position coach and your competitive high school coordinators. The biggest difference is the friends they've made in their careers.

I make sure to let them know if I wanted commentary about the quality of play, particularly how about how "sorry" a team is, that I would show my credit recovery class film and I'd get the same comments. I also make sure to let them know they should be watching their position and the little things they need to be aware of (how flat is the center's step on a back block, do they down-down or combo on gap scheme plays, what we believe triggers them to change their run blocking scheme, etc) and even try to justify some of our game plan if we see them struggle with something similar. I try everything within my power not to comment on the quality of the opponent (good or bad) and treat the film like it's business and strictly business.
Not to sound egotistical but I don't think the majority of teenagers will ever be able to watch film and assess and critique their own performance or an opponent without a coach walking them through it. I know I wouldn't have been able to. We use our time during 6th period and lunch to watch film with the kids and any time they put in on their own is peaches and cream

True story - we actually had a parent buy a jersey (and number) for his son. He did the same for baseball. He was a third string QB who missed at least one practice a week. This was 5 years ago. He still posts on message boards claiming we can't coach, we're underachievers, etc

I don't know why but it rages me when teams brag about winning league titles at the JV and/or freshman level. There's a school in our league that has posted on social media for years about how good their lower levels are every week but they haven't made in the playoffs since 2013 and haven't won a varsity league title since 2009. A billion hashtags like #startingthefoundation #futureisbright. I literally saw one of their kids at the gym wearing a JV league title shirt. LOL

I'd second the idea that you should go have your players watch a big time successful program practice. Hell, just watching it makes me a better coach...

I posted it in another thread this year but we had a kid miss Labor Day morning practice because he had to "help set up for a pool party". His dad even emailed the HC and told him that, even went on to say it was unprofessional to have practice on Labor Day. Funny thing is the same parent is at all of our JV games harassing the coaches and telling them they're underachievers. Yesterday I heard from a buddy who had a 2 way starter's dad tell him that the kid couldn't be at practice because he had to go home as punishment for getting in trouble at home. When he was told that that meant that the kid wouldn't play in the game Dad got angry and scheduled an appointment with the principal. Some parents just don't get what punishment means. As for the best excuse we've heard, we had a kid call in once because they had a gopher in their house. A freakin' gopher. Wow. Lucky for us this kid was a reserve JV player. As much as we want to keep our numbers up, it probably would not hurt us one bit if dad took him for "greener pastures"

I coached at a similar program a few years back. Hadn't won a game in three years. The other team would score and the whole team would hang their heads "Oh ish here we go again"
The head coach had a rally cry for the team along the lines of "I'm better and bigger than the moment" when something goes bad and even showed clips of a prominent powerhouse in our league turning the ball over or getting sacked for massive losses of yardage and then bouncing back. He put it in the practice plan that we had to do PAT block and then kick return in the middle of a team segment and anybody who blocked a kick in the game automatically got player of the game.
Not saying it changed the fortunes of the program, we won 5 games in 2 years, but our losses, especially the second season, had little to do with the team's ability to cope with adversity.

2013 season. Up 21 at halftime twice in four weeks and ended up losing both. The kids had a ton of heart too. But once teams figured out that anybody with a pea shooter of an arm could complete verts all over us it was curtains.

Bus drivers that ignore the GPS and go off roading.
Massive let downs after big wins.
Teams that complete tipped passes for long touchdowns against us when we're in man.
Having touchdowns called back because a moron is holding on a screen pass. A freaking screen.
Letting a team you're better than and a staff you know you're smarter than and outwork beat you during their homecoming. And then getting on your phone and finding out the team you're playing next beat a really good team they weren't supposed to.
Losing with the first principal ever to hire you come to the game to support you.
All of it happened to us tonight. It's going to take a lot of beer to forget this one.

Parents that lose their mind when the JV gets blown out once. Our JV was competitive the first two games but got blown out last week. A couple, whose son is the fifth string corner and make excuses for him to miss practice every week, were heckling the coaches saying they don't know how to call an offense and that the QB sucked and when the 18-year-old first year QB coach turned around to look who was screaming they asked him WTF he was looking at and he should turn around and actually do his job as a coach. Next morning dad was waiting in the parking lot for the head varsity coach to tell him that we're extremely talented, we're underachieving and the hallmark of a real program is how good their JV is... ...funny part is we don't have a single guy with an offer and our JV is typically competitive. A few weeks later....more insane parents. Today one of them tried to get into the OC's face after the JV game. Between this and making a crap ton of excuses for their kids to miss practice, this group of JV parents is toxic. Worse than usual.

1. Administrations who hire coaches solely on the credential that they were a "pro athlete" deserve every bit of failure that comes their way.
2. This is a shame because I coach in the Southern Section as well and I know Paso Robles was a quality program for a long time.

Yesterday after a JV game (which we won 12-0), the opposing coach told me how he was on his 4th string QB and they have a bunch of injuries.
How about "good game coach"? Or if you're going to play the injury card, tell me before the game so it doesn't sound like a sorry excuse for losing if you tell me after.

I have one more thing that makes me rage but it's extremely uncommon. A guy I work with is a former assistant coach who coached a couple of local underachieving schools. He tells me at least once a week he'd love to coach again but the programs in the area aren't run the way programs should be run. He also tells me he deserves to be a defensive coordinator and he can shut down any offense with his defense. I know this isn't a common rager for most people but it is for me and my personal day to day life because I have to listen to him everyday. New school year, same guy...today he told me he didn't want to coach at a school because he heard they were going to run an "ancient" single wing offense that anybody can shut down. We're playing that team this week and they're running a no-huddle pistol veer with a wing and ran for about 300 yards against a (typically) good program in their first game last Friday. What a bozo. That's a red flag for anybody interviewing potential assistants - if they think offenses aren't good because they're "old". Down block, base block, reach block, read a defender and make him wrong and use angles to your advantage. That is the foundation of offensive football and has been for over 100 years. People like this don't deserve to call themselves "coach"....

Yes and yes to bringing the energy as a coach. Listen to the "batteries not included" podcast by Joe Daniel.
One thing I do is competition. Little things like "who can get the most feet in the ground in these 6 seconds hitting the sled", time DL running hoops, or if your HC allows it, play music during practice.

That's what happens when you hire a big name NFL player and not a coach to run your program. They used to win the title in their division every other year without breaking a sweat, then they went a couple of seasons "only" going 11-2 or something like that, entitled parents said the HC was an underachiever, the admin bought in and fired him.
Even worse, afterwards they could've hired any coach in California. Instead they hired a retired NFL player who was a full time TV analyst to run the program full time. I respected Pierce as a player but he is over his head as a major HS head coach. The admin screwed the pooch and another couple years like this and Poly will go the way of the majority of former Southern California public school power houses.

Funny part is....the school's HC was in my student teaching cohort. He was coaching at a mid level school at the time stacked with talent but always finished runner up in their league. Every time I saw him for the whole semester the guy sang the blues about how all the kids in his boundaries are recruited to other schools.

Pretty sure it's foggy ground for a passing league coach to be at a school where summer league players are at. isn't it that AAU coaches can't be coach their respective high school coaches? The guy isn't a "coach" as far as the school board as concerned. But needless to say he's there to help the football program.
