We lost a close game on hour home field which was essentially for the district title. The game was back and forth and they won by 4. While we are shaking hands after the game their best player, who we had a hard time stopping, told several of our plays "you can't stop me" and "I own this field". I can't say for a fact that my players didn't say anything, but I didn't hear it if they did, but I did hear what our opponent said. Before I even got to mid field, they are placing their helmets on our paw print. I get to the middle of the field and their cheerleaders have given their flag to a player who is getting ready to "Baker Mayfield" it. Our players see it happening and start making their way back to the middle of the field. Luckily cooler heads prevailed and he didn't try to plant the flag I our turf field.
I have been at this for a while and have seen some bonehead things, but this may take the cake.

Yeah but there isn't much that you can do about it except keep your kids from escalating it, which you did.

Kids always emulate what they see on tv as being cool. As soon as I saw that Baker Mayfield stuff go down in Ohio, I said to my wife “Thank god we don’t have a flag or I’d be breaking up a fight over stuff like this later this year.”

Well,
And expect other team's coaches to respect the game and control their players.

Well, And expect other team's coaches to respect the game and control their players. I'm not sure he was going to say anything until our staff stepped in and defused the situation. And yes, winning fixes a whole bunch of problems.

My senior year in high school we had a teammate get shot and killed just before the season started. We all wore a sticker with his number on the back of our helmets and had his number painted in the grass behind the endzone.
We lose a last second close game to our rival, after which about 10-15 of their guys run over stomp on the number and tear it up with their cleats.
I can't imagine many more things more disrespectful to happen postgame.

Earlier this year we lost a one point game in the closing minutes. After the game the opposing coach motions for his fans to come on the field--knowing we don't allow any fans, including ours down there. They dance on our logo for a bit. I didn't pay them much attention, nor did my team. My wife, however, saw the whole thing. When the opposing coach is doing his tv interview shortly after that, my wife walks between him and the camera and says to the interviewer, "why don't you ask him about that classy move he just did?". The guy goes nuts....yelling "arrest her, arrest her". She filmed him going nuts. If you're going to be a jerk, don't get upset when somebody calls you out on it.

Ever since scouting a game and seeing a kid get laid out while walking through the line we have our kids wear their helmets when shaking hands.

As the hc, i stand at the start of the line, make sure everyone has their helmets on, then as i send the kids on their way, i remind them to say nothing but good game and then to go shake our fans hands and thank them for coming to support us. We had zero issues all season (inner city st louis). The fans really seem to enjoy it as well.

My junior year in high school we added a school to our schedule, another local Catholic school that was playing a partial league schedule before joining the league fully the following season. There was bad blood between our school and theirs well before the game, as their head coach had been an assistant at our school as late as the year before (walked off the field one day because his son, the starting QB, had been benched), and every coach on their staff was a former player or coach or both at our school. One guy in particular was talking a lot in the week leading up to the game. So we play the game, we win 13-0, and as we are going through the hand shake line, one of our assistant coaches winds up and punches the coach from the other team that had been talking (ironically, they we were high school teammates). At that point all hell broke loose, with two football teams, coaching staffs, and the fans from two teams on a football field engaged in a full scale brawl. The local police had to come out to disperse the crowd and restore order, which took about 30 minutes. The end result was that the assistant coach from my school was given a 2 year coaching ban, and the following year the game had to be played at our place again because their local boro didn't want the headache of having to have enough cops on hand in case there was another brawl.

This is why I hate the baseball handshake. Touching every players hand and saying good game. What if it wasn't a good game? Shake the hand of the players you know and/or respect. Coaches meet and shake hands. I hate the long line.

I would have gotten the kids off of the field ASAP and then fired off an email to the opposing school's AD and my AD, detailing the poor sportsmanship. The white-flag and the little display at midfield isn't kosher, in my book. It may be viewed as whining after losing a game but so be it.

Good job making sure your players didn't do anything stupid. Unfortunately there are a-hole coaches who can't control their kids.

Many years ago we lost a nailbiter to our rival. The game was chippy all night. I can honestly say that our guys stayed pretty classy while the other team was pretty thuggish. The opposing fans were riding our kids pretty hard. After the game while the handshake was going on, a kid from their team thought he'd really rub it in by running across the field and then running back & forth in front of our stands waving their school's big 7'x5' flag. We had a freshman tackle that was 6'4", 290 that was the strong silent type. When he saw the kid running around he lost it, was on him before anyone knew it. He ripped the flag out of the kid's hand but the flag waver made the mistake of swinging on him. Our guy cracked him over the head with the flag pole (kid went down like a sack of dirt), snapped it over his knee, threw it on him, spit on him and walked away. I was amazed that it didn't start a freaking riot. There's footage of it on youtube somewhere. That kid went on to play at a SEC school and sniffed the pros but couldn't finish. Fun kid to coach.

Take your loss shake their hands endeavor to be better and act better than the fools they are after a win. Use it as a teaching moment for your kids. I would certainly use it as a teachable moment but I would also take steps to try an ensure we didn't run into the same situation when we played them again at home. It's just too volatile of a situation to take lightly and the coach was lucky that he had a kids with cool heads on their shoulders and didn't try to retaliate. It only would have taken one of his players being reactive in the situation in order for there to be a full on brawl. And, that is a situation that I don't want to deal with.

We play a school that allows their student body to rush the field after big wins. Well, just 2 weeks ago, one little Johnny non football student starts mouthing off to the opponent. The opponent decked him and the school that let's kids on the field is complaining about sportsmanship. I predicted this would happen years ago.

Cant teach class....all you can do is put your concerns in writing to his boss. Then next time you play them, beat them.
