WTF! So he skipped the fundraiser which gives him some very small argument that his benching was related. Regardless, the kid is a turd...your team participates in a fundraiser so you do it because it is the right thing to do as a teammate. You are either part of the team or you are not.
Besides, it was a "chance for him to showcase his offensive & defensive skills". He chose to SKIP one game so clearly he set the precedent that it is ok for him to miss a few more!
There is no way this kid has a good or positive attitude. I hope the school & especially the coach win the case.

And this is why a slow move towards "club" sports or at least non-school affiliated sports will continue to progress. Unfortunately, if that is the law it doesn't look great for the coach & especially the school.

Yes, may not get him-them for bullying but it is tantamount to extortion.

The kid had practice to "showcase his skills". Coaches oftentimes have kids that are good athletes but definitely need work as people. We play them because it's best for the team and, ultimately, best for us as coaches (winning = more $). I've got a kid right now that I'd bet money will end be in Pelican Bay within 4 years but I play him because he's good for the team and he earned it.
All that said, the fundraiser thing is going to bite the coach.

If he cut him, then there would be an issue, but if he merely benched him for not participating, you could rephrase it as rewarding the students who did participate?

Re-read the italicized portion of 19delta's post.

That is an issue........ I don't think not playing them is the issue, but not letting them go to practice = not letting them participate.

I know this school and coach. Here is what is being said in the rumor mill. This past season was his first year as the HBC. There was a younger kid and a transfer who were both better than the kid and started getting more attention at practice. The kid begins to show attitude and play the whole "I'm already a starter" type of card. He misses the alumni game which was the fundraiser but had missed multiple practices before this. When the season starts, the parents complain about playing time. Coach goes on to explain how the kid's attitude and poor attendance is effecting him. He mentions all of the things the kid missed and the fundraiser was one of them. So Bingo! Parent is now able to say that the kid is being punished for not participating in a fundraiser. It's a total B.S. situation.

Since this has come out, I have had 2 parents ask where our fundraising money is going. I show them the books because we don't have anything to hide, but I've never been asked that before until this story came out.

This story is a great example of why every coach should keep a detailed journal of every they do on a daily basis. Documentation by the HC here could be a life saver. If not, it is your word against somebody else.

If not, it is your word against somebody else. Many, you must have a lot more time then I did. If what was said above is accurate it's far from his word against yours. Assuming that practice is mandatory, if the kid missed multiple practices, that's a fact. A .000 batting average is pretty black and white.

Assuming that practice is mandatory, if the kid missed multiple practices, that's a fact. A .000 batting average is pretty black and white. Let me re-word, if you make a decision on a player based on fact, you had better document that fact. Obviously nobody has time to write a daily diary of practice, but if you have a guy miss practice and your rules state play is based on that, you better document when that player wasn't there. Dad comes in, I say "Look, he missed three practices, here's the rule...see ya" Also, if the rumors are correct and this is what happened, I'm all in for the coach. If it is just a coach being a di**, I hope he gets his a$$ handed to him. Guys like that make all of us look bad.
