Does the size of your program influence how you feel about it? Yeas ago I was coaching in a program that had 120+ players. Now I'm in a program with 40. I'd wager both programs hhave about the same percentage of attendence...but, if the top 3 players miss it "seems" like a bigger issue in the small program.

Bottom line...my #1 rb is gonna play regardless of his summer attendance. He is that much better....what do you do...job=winning

Some of this all seems so counter productive sometimes. We complain about other sports and their schedules but then mandate non-mandatory work out and punish the kids for missing workouts. Complain about why kids don't want to play but then don't give them a decal like the rest of the team cause they missed 4 workouts. Can't play until you make up what you missed in non-mandatory work outs. Some times kids just want to be part of something to be part of something. To be around their buddies. To have something to do so they don't have to go home to God only knows what. Look at these teams with 80-100 kids. Can't tell me the vast majority aren't just along for the ride. We're a small school and I get it, I get pissed when kids miss our summer stuff. But I can pretty tell you who our starters will be at every position this up coming season regardless of what they do in the summer. This isn't the NFL where guys battle for their jobs every day. AMEN!!

Sounds like most of our problems come from people over us. Don't forget it as you all move up in the world. In my case, they are well meaning but create more problems than they solve. If they would just get out of the way.

Starting OL will probably be back up DL. I have done a "starting" DL and in reality a "when they cross the 50 DL"

Not really. They are usually so far behind the others. But if a junior comes during the summer and works his way on, the it's ok. We are a small school with around 35. Really don't want a senior who has never played.

Been at small schools for awhile now. Best 11 play period. As bad as it sounds it just kind of all shakes out once you get going. Small schools it becomes evident who needs to be on the field real quick so you fit them in where you can. Not very deep there but sometimes it's just the way it works. We don't even consider platooning. Thats how we end up with a 165 pound guard. SOB is one of our best and has to play somewhere.

We also have 35 or so. We put then where they help the team best. Like OP said, a kid may be the best at one thing but help us more at another position. Really try to ensure OL only goes one way.

If they were still playing with the #1s against your JV and bringing the house, then you do what you have to do sometimes.
Your responsibility is to your kids, not another coaches feelings.

So Cal. And the main reason why teams are already doing 7 on 7 is because they feel the need to keep their kids away from the leaches that are the 7 on 7 all-star tournaments. That's how it's being sold to us in GA. If we, as high schools dont get involved, 7v7 will become like AAU basketball.

Football is year-round in FL. We have a month of full pad practice and a live game in May. We start workouts at the end of January, 4 days/week. That includes study hall, lifting, running/agility, and indy/team install. We have 7-on-7 starting in march, going all the way through April. Kids who do other sports fit football in around their in-season practices, and then join once their season is done. We get 40-60 kids each day. Regular attendance is one of the teachable moments in accountability that we preach. Yes, it's a lot, and a GRIND, especially this time of year. However, it's necessary for 2 reasons . 1- it's FL, we need to do this to stay competitive. and 2- we are an inner-city school. We'd lose (and we do lose) a majority of our kids if they would be allowed to roam the streets once school ends. Our school day runs from 7-1:30, so our kids are still home by 5:30 every day. There has been a lot of talk around here of "less being more", could a team not do this and still win come season? Are there any examples of a coach choosing to do less and not wearing down the kids yet still winning? Or would it be seen as blasphemous for a coach not to do this (gotta keep up with the Joneses) and no program ever given it a try? By remaining competitive, do you also mean that if you didnt do this other coaches would come in a poach your players? The less is more idea is what got me thinking. Another thread was about simplifying your program. I am curious what others do. I've seen great kids burn out. Not just fb players, baseball and basketball guys. This year round stuff gets old.

In GA, we get 10 days for spring and no spring scrimmage. If you elect to not do spring, you can do 2 fall scrimmages instead of 1.

1st...I hate typing on my phone...sorry for the errors.
2nd...in GA we are limited. Out of season during the school year, we can only work with 2 players per coach doing football drills. Lifting and conditioning has no restrictions. We can do as much as we want during summer.

Outside of official sprin footbalk, how much do your kids do?
All of ours (35+) lift in school. How much after school don't ou require/encourage?

Kinda similar...we were playing our last game of the year and starting to pull away from the othER team. I guess I was getting a little to fancy with the play calls. My qb comes over and says "just run power, they can't stop sh@t". So we did, about 15 times in a row. To have a qb say that made me feel great.

We dont have a specific quality "rule". but most video exchanged is of really good quality. The major problem we have is that most schools in our conference are small rural type schools and the quality of the press boxes are vastly different. There is one school where you might as well be filming on the sideline.

I wish we could make 25k. We are a small rural school. 230 kids. Entire football budget is less than 15k. But i understand what you are saying. Seems to me the amount you make off of a golf tournament is really just based on how much leg work you're willing to do.

biggest issue we had with golf tournament was beer. Previouos admin was in favor and even helped go load the truck up at the local store. Had beer carts and sold it during tourney. New admin doesnt like the idea of the school being connected with alcohol. oh well...we would make around 5-6k each year.

One of the best coaches i ever worked for started every spring with "This is a football..." No matter the talent level, we were always fundamentally sound. Beat alot of teams with "superior" talent.

Is it lack of numbers?
In Ga, schools can elect to play a half game. Four schools, one location. Each plays a half. Only one cost of refs. Intended for small schools, and worked well last year. We had about 30 or so on the roster and took about 15 to JV games.
