I don't see it that way. but it is semantics
you and I both know the "entitlement" that a coach feels in doing what he thinks is right and best for the kids is different than the entitlement attitude that kids have where they want things they haven't put the time and effort into
reminds me of a quote from rush you can't get something for nothing

bull they CHOOSE to play football because they WANT to we are about the last line of defense in this country teaching these things and you/we choose to coach it. yeah and someone chooses me and pays me to do so that means i am going to make the kids do it how i think is right

aren't we kind of being hypocrits here? aren't we complaining because we want kids to come in, work hard, etc, etc. Isn't that in itself a sense entitlement the other direction? Who the F are you? Why should I listen to you? Why should I have to come to weights everyday? What have you done for me? After some deep thought (as deep as I'm capable of) and reflection, aren't both sides wanting something for nothing? We ask the kids to "buy in"...what the hell does "buy in" mean? It means do a lot of hard work, follow the rules, follow the needs of the team, based simply on faith or rather...potential. bull they CHOOSE to play football because they WANT to we are about the last line of defense in this country teaching these things

copier in the teachers lounge?
i like drawing the defenses over and over again just get's me used to "seeing" it the ways a defense could/should/would line up to various formations
then find ways to attack it with what we do

i have learned more the last two years with a defensive head coach (that REALLY knows his stuff) than my previous years combined
with just us getting on the board and "battling" it out

Tog, are you sure you can use brass knuckles. That might be considered a uniform adornment. yeah sorry forgot to add that if you camoflague them as linemen gloves then it is ok but only if that linemen is wearing an eligible number and he is out past the hashmarks THEN it's totally cool with the zebras

The biggest thing that annoyed me was trying to get a direct answer, which was often where the "gotta run" thing came in. About the offense, about alternative rules changes. I once asked him what he would think about eliminating the entire number eligibility rule (something I would think he would be for) but also upping the time the offense must be set before the snap to 2, 3 or 4 seconds (to give the defense time to react) and I got the same nonanswer obfuscate thing. It was like my question didn't exist, or I stopped existing as long as I wanted to engage in a discussion. . I think this was where the alarm bells REALLY started to go off. It became more obvious that it wasn't as much about his "little team" competing with bigger teams, as much as it was about doing so running the EXACT A-11 that they were marketing. All of the other suggestions would have addressed his goal, BUT he hadn't gotten there first..there was no "patent" on them so to speak, and therefore they were not acceptable. But exploiting the loophole, well, that was already packaged and marketed. That is what is sad now. It is apparent that the original objective has taken a back seat to Pushing and Marketing the A-11. at the detriment of the kids at piedmont

basically
they have to be willing to 1. spend some time to hash things out
2. not give up so easy
3. when/if they are overuled by those in charge---make sure the kids never know the difference
4. if the ideas have merit and can be meshed with the overall vision of the head coach then #3 won't be that big a deal
5. have a thick skin
6. have a sense of humor

all of the "all star games"
are total bs
if i was a kid i wouldn't play
if i was a college coach--i would tell them not to
as a hs coach-- i would also tell them not to

Post by tog on Feb 5, 2009 9:36:22 GMT -6
first they have to 1. want to go 2. do what it takes to be able to get in 3. be good enough
i do these things 1. make list of all potential candidates, phone numbers, addresses, parent's names, ht, wt, positions etc, possible level of play they can play at--your basic info
2. transcripts and sat/act scores---we scan them into a giant file that shows each of the kids on our list
3. highlight films--we cut em up, get em on the computer--then download em onto googlevideo that we can put links in an email
4. game film-we put selected ones on googlevideo
then every coach that comes by every coach that calls every coach that emails every coach anyone on staff knows every coach i can even find an email on in this state every coach that i can then find an email on out of the blue
we send them all emails with all of this info and links to the video
it has pretty much all the information they need to evaluate talent/level of play/eligible or not
when they get interested in that-they come around, email back, call back
gets the ball rolling a bit
saves the whole tape/dvd copying mailing nightmare
makes it easy on the recruiter's end to
pop open an email--click a link ok that kid can't play here ok
that kid CAN
what are his grades
ok
he is good

They offered our HFC the AD job here a few years ago. He is also the head baseball coach. They told him if he took it, he could be an assistant but not a header for any sport. Needless to say he didn't take it. i don't get that so he is the boss over all of athletics but then someone who is under him is now his boss on a specific team? don't like that at all
