do you really need a warning label on that screwdriver that says
"if you poke this screwdriver in your eye, your eye might pop out and you won't be able to see out of it, and it will hurt"
?
really?
its football damnit
the sport of men
wtf is this world coming to

PRIDE

Post by tog on Apr 6, 2009 7:06:48 GMT -6
to me
it is all about how much they have invested
it is my job as well as the other coaches on staff to get them to invest
this is built on building relationships with the kids beyond the weightroom and the field
this is not something that can be faked
if you truly care about kids and want them to do well in life beyond the game
then
it should be natural
notice i didn't say easy
as each kid is different, each place is different, each program is different, there are obstacles all over the place that prevent you from winning, that hold back kids from having pride in ANYTHING, much less a football team
knowing where the ledge is, and pushing them up to it in how much they can and will invest in the program lets them see the pride they have in it, they have invested all the hours in the weightroom/running/puking/hitting/sore etc
when it comes to friday night, they have worked too hard to let themselves or their teammates down
to me that is pride

Thanks coach gordon and endersgame. From day 1 on this board, and I was here Day 1, I have purposed to do what I can to avoid that approach out of respect for what Coach Huey and tog were trying to do with this board, and I am grateful for your comment, it means a great deal. For the record, if you ever see that change in a way that would seem inconsistent, you have my permission to PM me and call me on it. I can't do anything about what others say, but I do want to continue to be a legitimate help where I can, without sounding like a pop up ad. I have benefitted from so many, so much more than I have contributed, and that is what makes this so much fun! I cannot recall the moderation team ever discussing DSQA as someone that is pushing his material. he shares freely and openly. anyone that reads his stuff can realize that it would benefit them to get his material plus he doesn't come across as a used car salesman he comes across as a buddy of yours that has a car you might like to buy---he will talk all about the car when you ask but isn't bothering you about it

this is all about relationships
don't cut off your nose to spite your face
if a kid truly doesn't want to play football ok
if you care about kids then you still high five em in the hall and you still talk with em about grades and anything in the world
then if you choose your spots wisely to talk to them about football
it isn't forced at all
it is you having built a relationship with the kid where he knows you give a crap about him beyond the game and what he can do for you as a kid
the truly awesome coaches i have seen are the ones that do this with any and every kid they see, talented or not
i consciously strive to be one of those guys every day
i make a point of it

this reminds me of a lame call i got as a senior in high school
i was pass blocking my back is obviously to the qb so i can't see what he is doing
de jumps up in the air i whomper him into the ground
i get a personal foul
i was pissed
how do i know the ball has been thrown?
if i can't see it
then i am playing
PERIOD
if a dl is fighting his butt off trying to get to the qb and cant see if the ball has been let loose and hits the qb low then ok
judgement call
was it deliberate?
i can handle that
but black and white rule on a gray situation is just lame

unless a ad/hc (95%) or very few coordinators all of us teach too I think what he meant was that in TX, the COACHES are real coaches. They are the guys that have 1,500 posts on this board. They are the guys who realize Football is year round. They realize that come August, the days are very long until November. In other places..sometimes you find coaches doing it for the stipend, or because they are NEEDED, rather than because they want to coach. yeah 50 we got the kind he was talking about too though guys that have to back up to the pay window to get the paycheck generally it is for their teaching and coaching stipend good news is they don't last in good programs very long if they can ever get to em in the first place

read most all of the issues in the general board dealing with getting kids to offseason to lift and other things of that nature
we don't have that problem
we have other's but having athletic periods means we get and keep the kids

at the very top probably not, other than we play by NCAA rules
once you get to second tier teams from each state, I would think the ones in Texas would be a lot farther along for a variety of reasons

I didn't know where to ask, and sorry that it's not football but does anyone know of a baseball coaching message board similiar to this site? Thanks. I guess I'll post the first non thingy response: Not that I know of but if you find one let me know cause I'd like to read it. =) and if you were on the same coaching staff we would mess with you to no end out of love

I should add that while powerlifting is not a state sanctioned sport here, several of our meets (about 50%) are AAU sanctioned- and those that are not always follow AAU rules. That might be the case with your situation as well. Well after some intensive searching.. (typed in Louisiana Powerlifting in google : I came up with our state's powerlifting website.. Our state athletic association does not sanction it, but it seems to be pretty well run none the less.. I guess to build upon my first post.. how much problems do you have with the guys not wanting to wear those little suits in public? And.. do lift techniques tend to vary from your powerlifting kids to your basketball and baseball kids who do not do the powerlifting? once they start getting strong they don't care about the suits and yes the lift form is different the powerlifting kids do it right

i would love to comment on this but i have too many things to do
lol
asst hc--i do all the little paperwork stuff the hc/ad needs to dump on me
oc-all that entails
head powerlitfting-- fill out forms in triplicate for no reason due to district policy
recruiting guy-i fill out all the cards, make the videos, dowload the videos, get them out to hundreds of schools
run offseason
video guy
computer guy
good cop or bad cop depending on what the hc needs--see asst hc--we work well together

There also is a lot of cross over conversations between catagories, say a thread starts as shotgun veer, some under center guys chime in about flexbone veer, then some wishbone guys, then some guys chime in on Play Action off veer, complimentary plays off veer.....its all good conversation and can be applied between various systems, to be so specific on topics within threads would eliminate the sharing of ideas between systems.....just my opinion..... exactly this is what huey and i talked about when this thing first got off the ground we had been on the other football boards for a long time and saw what issues they had we then addressed it the forums/subgroups will stay the way they are unless someone comes up with a spectacular argument that we haven't thought about maybe an a11 section? lol
